Engaging hard rock,

This album, now available on a remastered CD, was probably the best of the four studio releases by Toronto. Named for their adoptive city, Toronto was a hard rock band that achieved some success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. While they were known primarily in Canada, singer Holly Woods came from the United States, and second guitarist Sharon Alton came from England. Because of their two female members, they were often likened to Heart, but their style was harder, closer to Pat Benatar. This CD is consistently strong from beginning to end. The songs feature good melodies and engaging hooks. This edition also includes two bonus tracks, What About Love, which was later turned into a major hit by Heart, and the autobiographical Across the Border, a chronicle of their own early years.

I was into Toronto in the early 80's when they were coming out of Canada. I saw them opening for Nazareth in Beaumont, TX. They had a hot little chick singer and an equally hot female rhythm guitarist/back-up vocalist. They tore Nazareth up. If you like Heart, Loverboy, Survivor, etc., you'll like these guys. Catchy songs, adequate musicians, great vocalist.

Toronto could have been an 80s powerhouse girl power band alongside Pat Benatar, Heart, Quarterflash, Toni Basil, and Scandal if they'd only been given some airplay. Covering ground from hard progressive rock to more sensual and aggressive girl rock sounds, this band could easily have been credited with helping define the sounds of the 80s if they'd been given any notice at all. Not to mention, the vocalist could belt out the rockers with the best of them...and proves it with a rendition of "What About Love," which would be recorded by Heart a few years later. Also charming is the 'new wave' influence on tracks such as the incredibly catchy "Sick & Tired" which allows a synthesizer to carry the hook. Love it.

More Than Just One Song,

My wife and I have loved Your Daddy Don't Know ever since we first saw the video in the 80's. We even covered it in our band. However, we were never able to find their albums anywhere. We'd always heard they were Canada's answer to Heart, but judging from Your Daddy Don't Know, I had to wonder.
I found this vinyl album in a record store in Las Vegas and got it just for Your Daddy Don't Know. After listening to it several times, I am actually quite impressed with their hard rock sound. Where Heart had a lot more of those "girly man" songs, Toronto stays in a heavier vein, and pulls it off pretty well. There is not a bad song on the album. I'll have to admit that Your Daddy Don't Know sounds a little out of place with the rest of the songs, but not enough to be jarring. The instrumental prowess of the musicians is top notch, the songs well written, and Holly Woods has an outstanding voice. I only give it four stars because despite being hard rock, it is still a bit too mellow for my usual metal tastes. If you like good solid hard rock with a female singer, this is the album for you. Highly recommended. |
