the Record Theatre,

This review is from: Get It (Audio CD)
Late 1977, Syracuse, NY. Working at the Record Theatre on Marshall Street. Drips and drabs of British New Wave were coming into the store. Curious, I played the Damned, Stranglers, Pistols, etc. It was a little too amateurish for me yet (until about 6 mos. later, but that's another story). I sliced open the shrink wrap on this LP b/c I knew just a wee bit about Edmunds.
This LP holds up today with the great Rock + Roll albums. It's so well played and produced and just rocks along in a great rockabilly, rock, crooning way. "Darlin" is still my favorite love song ever. Every time a customer came into the record store and asked for a suggestion, I would ALWAYS recommemnd this one and they would come back ecstatic the next day - I must have personally sold 50 copies of this LP. This also opened up the world of Nick Lowe, Stiff Records and the Flamin Groovies to me, and I have cherished them all ever since. Highly, highly recommended.

Fantastic album.,

This is arguably the best Dave Edmunds CD you can get. All the songs are great. True classic rock'n'roll from an authentic roots musician. Some tunes are rockabilly and some are more traditional country, but all are pure "Dave Edmunds" rockin' sounds. It's truly amazing that this brilliant recording artist hasn't become more mainstream in the U.S. and had more big hits here, even though he certainly isn't obscure by any means. Along with his other two albums from the late '70's, "Tracks on Wax 4" and "Repeat When Necessary", I highly recommend this.

Welsh guitar god Dave Edmunds' career really kicked into high gear with "Get It," a near perfect blend of rockabilly, swing, blues, rock and roll, and guitar, guitar, guitar... Essentially the first Rockpile album (as were most of Edmunds' and Nick Lowe's early solo efforts), Edmunds really set a high standard for himself with revved up renditions of Bob Seger's "Get Out Of Denver," the original version of "I Knew The Bride", and R&B chestnut "Juju Man." Slap this disc on for an instant party and see for yourself why Led Zeppelin thought so highly of Edmunds that they signed him to their fledgling Swan Song label. Probably the closest Edmunds has ever gotten to recreating the spirit and feel of his live show, "Get It" is a delight.

Best Damned rockabilly guitarist alive next to Chucky B.,

This man doesn't play the blues much, but he has paid his dues. Dave Edmunds is one of the premiere rock guitarists in the classic style. If you like masters like Brian Setzer or George Thoughrogood...you will love this music. Get It has three of the most awsome rockers ever made. I Knew the Bride, JuJu Man, and Get out of Denver. Simply the best.

I once read a review of a Dave Edmunds album where a critic said that one day Edmunds would release a truly great rock and roll album. The critic obviously had never listened to Get It. An absolutely smoking album. The cover of Bob Seegar's "Get out of Denver" may be the fastest paced song ever recorded. Plus a cover of the Sinatra tune "Where or When." From start to finish, a great work.

Edmunds first outing with a prototype Rockpile lineup,

Edmunds third full-length LP is his first with what would become Rockpile (Nick Lowe, et al.), an on-going partnership that would alternately back Edmunds, Lowe and produce LPs of their own.The sound of "Get It" is a lot fuller than his previous two LPs ("Rockpile" and "Subtle as a Flying Mallet"). There's the requisite pub-rock standards (e.g., Bob Seger's "Get Out of Denver"), but also new to this LP (for Edmunds, anyway) is the songwriting of Nick Lowe. The combination of Lowe's clever lyrics and tributary melodies with Edmunds' recreations of productions past is terrific. It both freshens Edmunds own sounds and gives Lowe's songs a retro feeling. Edmunds (and Lowe and Rockpile) produced several more excellent LPs (including Lowe's stellar '78 LP "The Jesus of Cool"), but this is the one that really marked the beginning.

Good Rocking, Sharp Guitar,

Dave Edmunds provides great vocals and stellar guitar playing on his interpretation of some rocking covers. He rips it up on the Bob Seeger rave "Get Out of Denver", stays pretty faithful on his version of buddy Nick Lowe's song "I Knew the Bride", and continues with killer versions of Graham Parker's "Back to Schooldays", which I feel is stronger than the original (later Dave did a great version of another Parker song, "Crawling From the Wreckage", also probably better than Parker's). I love Dave's version of "Here Comes the Weekend", and the great covers continue. Dave's version of "Where or When" is based on the Belmont's version, and does not disappoint. Some of the other highlights are "Ju Ju Man", "Hey Good Looking", and "My Baby Left Me". This is one of many Dave Edmunds disks worth owning.

This release takes you back to the sounds of the late 50's and early 60's. I bought this after seeing Rockpile open for Bad Company in 1977. The essential parts of this disc are Dave Edmunds, of course, Nick Lowe and the rest of Rockpile. Get It is a masterpiece of music that feels good. The tempo is lively even on tunes like "Worn Out Suits..." and "My Baby Left Me". I don't want to label this as a party album, but listening always leaves me in a good mood. To rephrase something I already said it makes you feel alive.Edmunds, Lowe & Company outdid themselves on this. The choice of songs is outstanding, the musicianship superb and the production first class! There's a great version of "Hey Good Lookin'" that would make Hank proud. Songs of merit include a cover of Bob Seger's "Get out of Denver", "I Knew the Bride", "What Did I Do...", "Here Comes the Weekend" and "Back to School Days". This is rockabilly at its best! The only bad thing I can say about this disc is that my Mom & Dad even liked it! I had to record it for them even.

The best Rock & Roll album of the last 40 years!,

Damn, I love this album! When I first bought the UK vinyl, I played it three times a day for two months. I could not stand still when this music was on.I still rank this as one of my top five releases of all time. If you can find the UK vinyl, buy it - it blows away the CD. If not, the CD will also make you bop till you drop! Paul

Dave Edmund's Rock'n'Roll Masterpiece,
By
This review is from: Get It (MP3 Download)
1977 I came across this album while browsing through vinyl records in the Anaheim, CA public library. Dave Edmunds, Get It. So I did... and I was thrilled. From the moment the needle hit the groove on Bob Seger's Get Out of Denver, I was hooked. Follow that with Nick Lowe's I Knew the Bride and Graham Parker's Back to School Days... there is not a bad cut on this album - rockabilly, melody, twang. I returned it to the library and bought a new copy at Tower Records. I wore it out and bought another one, replaced it on CD and now it is on my iPOD. Since that day, I've purchased every Dave Edmunds album I could find (I even purchased albums he produced - Stray Cats, Polecats, kd lang before we'd heard of them) and have never been disappointed... although Get It is still my favorite (followed by DE7). If you like your rock'n'roll like it came out of Sun Studios with a sense of humor as well as a sense of history, then Get It.
