4.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic Yet Fresh
The recipe for successful commercial hip-hop seems to be overly thuggish rapping over bright and bouncy club-style beats. Everyone from Jay-Z to N.O.R.E. to P. i really wasn't expecting much from this album but it was suprisingly decent...... it has some good songs on it esp. "cross the border" which kills in clubs and house parties.... some other good songs are "suckas part 2" and "please dont mind".... overall the cd has some tight beats(done by neptunes) but the flows are extremely weak and there...

The recipe for successful commercial hip-hop seems to be overly thuggish rapping over bright and bouncy club-style beats. Everyone from Jay-Z to N.O.R.E. to P. Diddy has repeated this formula time and time again. Enter Philly's Most Wanted. This young duo from Philadelphia released "Get Down or Lay Down" in 2001. The vast majority of the record was produced by The Neptunes, who, after crafting hits for Mystikal, Jay-Z, and Beenie Man the year before, were on the verge of huge success that they are currently enjoying, making songs for every popular act in the music business.
The Neptunes created beats for a large number of the songs here. This makes them sound very interesting. The two rappers, Boo-Bonic and Mr. Man, constantly rap about nothing but beautiful women, getting respect from the haters, packing heat, and selling drugs. Sound familiar? Of course. But how can you be mad when they are presented over such a lush soundscape? The line-trading of "Philly Celebrities" has such a bouncy beat that you cannot help but think of riding with the top down in the summertime. And the verses spit on "Cross the Border" and "Please Don't Mind" sound so slick that the average lyricism and tired subject matter (pushing drugs and picking up girls at the club, respectively) doesn't even phase you.
Of course, there are a few weak points. By the end of the CD, the trademark Neptunes beats sound a little boring and the lyrics become a little predictable. But still, you can't get mad when The Neptunes produce great music and the few other guest producers (including Just Blaze) fare just as well. Congratulations to Most Wanted AND The Neptunes for creating a rap album that although based on what has been done and will be done many more times, still manages to sound fresh, giving you beats to nod your head to, ride to, and quick lyrics you won't need to decipher but rather just listen and enjoy for music's sake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philly keeps it bangin, August 7, 2001

This review is from: Get Down Or Lay Down (Audio CD)
This is the best cd i've bought this year besides maybe foxy brown - Thanks to the bangin beats of the 12 tracks the Neptunes produced. My favorites are "Please don't mind", "Cross The Border", & "Dream Car". Mr. & Boo definately have lyrical talent to take this album over the edge to one of the years best.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 star Near classic Debut album, September 6, 2005

This review is from: Get Down Or Lay Down (Audio CD)
Mr. Man & Boobonic bring a very tight album for their debut. After basically coming from nowhere, I never heard them on another song before this album or after this until their 2nd album dropped 3 years later. The Philly natives bring 14 songs, with the Neptunes providing beats for 10 of them (and actually they're for the most part very nicely produced even though I usually can't stand more then 2 or 3 of their beats on 1 album), T-Mix of Suave House nicely does 2 songs, and Epitome & Just Blaze each do 1. Of the 14 songs on here, 3 are classics, another 2-5 are near classics, 4 are ok and the rest are good, none I really skip over. Guests are minimal, rapping on 3 songs and doing hooks on a couple others. A must have album for rap fans.

#1 - 9.5 (tight beat)
#2 - 9
#3 - 8
#5 - 9.5 (f/ Andre Wilson -- nice relaxing ebat)
#6 - 10 (CLASSIC -- tight beat)
#7 - 9 (f/ Tammy Lucas -- nice beat)
#9 - 6.5
#10 - 7.5 (f/ Neptunes)
#12 - 10 (CLASSIC -- tight beat)
#13 - 10 (CLASSIC -- great beat -- f/ Beanie Sigel & Roscoe P Goldchain)
#14 - 9 (nice beat)
#16 - 6.5 (f/ Clipse)
#17 - 7
#18 - 8 (f/ Pusha T & Fabolous)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but, September 18, 2001
This review is from: Get Down Or Lay Down (Audio CD)
I think Philly's Most Wanted will have a great career in the rap game. They have good lyrics and a nice flow. The only thing that brings this album down are the beats. Almost every track sounds like a Neptune track. I have nothing against the Neptunes, cause i think they are very talented. However, there is such a thing called "overkill," and this is what they do. Maybe a track or two produced by producers like Organized Noize, Dre, Timbaland, or even Rocwilder would've been a nice change.

All In All, this album is worth the price tag because of the group themselves. If you like those Neptunes produced "rap-pop" songs, then this is your album. If not, then you might want to by an album like Redman's "Malpractice" or Fabolous' "Ghetto Fabolous."

After buying the single to Philly's Most Wanted's "Cross The Border", I knew I would purchase the CD, "Get Down Or Lay Down", once it was released. The single also featured "Suckas Pt 2" with Beanie Sigel. Both songs were produced by The Neptunes and they were both nice tracks from the duo from Philly. Then to make things even better, I saw the video to their second single, "Please Don't Mind" on BET's "106 and Park" before the CD was released. I liked this song even more than I liked "Cross The Border". "Get Down Or Lay Down" features The Neptunes on the boards for more than half of the tracks. As a matter of fact they produce 11 of the 18 tracks on the CD. Although that isn't a bad thing, as you listen to the CD, the tracks become very repetitive. Mr. and Boo-Bonic aren't ground breaking artists when it comes to their lyrics, but they do have a nice flow to the tracks that they are presented on their debut. As they continue to make CDs, their longevity will be determined by how much they can differentiate themselves on each track. Don't get me wrong, there are some good moments on this CD. The Neptunes produced "Radikal" featuring Kelis is a nice track and should be the 3rd single off of the CD. PMW flow nicely to this Neptunes' track and Kelis delivers on the chorus just like she did on Busta Rhymes' "What It Is". "Y'all Can't Never Hurt Us", produced by T-Mix of Suave House fame, is also another tight track on this CD. Other tracks worth checking out are the Just Blaze produced,... The Neptunes' produced, "Dream Car" (Do You Wanna Ride) w/Pharrell Williams, and the "Cross The Border (Remix)" w/Terrar & Fabolous. This is a nice debut by Philly's Most Wanted. They have enourmous potential. However, if they want to continue to preserve a mark in the hip hop industry, they can't make 14 or 15 Cross The Border's or Please Don't Mind's. Their music will become lost in the CD case and replaced with artists who go a step beyond what hip hop fans expect of them. If you liked their first 2 singles, you should still buy their CD. "Get Down Or Lay Down" is worth listening to but there isn't anything groundbreaking on this CD. They do a good job of representing Philly but they will have to go back to the lab and come up with something different on their next release.

This is a tight album to roll to. The flows are typical Philly styles with Mr sounding like Mase but the album is indeed tight. Mr Man and Boobonic spit on "Please Don't Mind","Suckas","Cross the Border,"The Game". All the beats are tight from the start to finish, neptunes all over this, Just Blaze. The album is actually tight all the way through with appearances by Beanie Sigel on "Suckas II",Fabulous on "Cross the Border RMX". Go out and get this. One of the best albums coming out of Philly this year, along with Bilal and Musiq. You got to love this Cd, the beats and Boobonic's flow. Grab this album. Peace. One.
