Editorial Reviews

2010 two CD release, BBE Records' fifth and arguably most exciting compilation with the French DJ and ambassador of Disco. For this compilation, Dimitri has exclusively reworked five tracks from the original multi-track tapes of Gamble and Huff with a further four being edited from the original 2 track stereo masters. Dimitri's selection on Disc One traces the evolution of the '70s Disco groove from the first ever Disco hit record, to the rejuvenation of the Jackson 5's career. Interspersed with obscurities such as Charles Mann to the magnificent Teddy Pendergrass, Philly International's answer to Marvin Gaye. Disc Two of the compilation pays homage to the original creators and innovators of the remix and extended edits with reworkings exclusively by Dimitri from Paris.

So I've been getting down with philly sound for a few weeks now, and all I can say is....WOW! This is far and away Dimitri's most accessible release to date, and the first time that I have actually heard of some of the artists he has selected. And it is stunning! If you have never had the pleasure of experiencing the monsieur's EXQUISITE taste in music, this is the place you will want to start.

Teddy Pendergrass is all over this, and I think he is my new favorite singer. Meanwhile, Eddie Kendricks has the voice of an angel, and Dimitri did such a wonderful job on the rework of "He's a Friend." The original is wonderful enough and was way ahead of its time, but Dimitri's version has a certain bounce to it--the gospel ending is phenomenal! I am also totally digging his version of "The Night the Lights Went Out in NYC." He turned it into a party song (kind of like Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up") and emphasized certain parts, and the result just does it for me. "Somebody pulled the plug...out the socket. For safety's sake, I went to the door to lock it." and that incredible synth line. That's wonderful stuff right there.

Want to give him his props for including Carl Bean's "I Was Born This Way." That song really stood out for me on the first listen, and there is such a wonderful energy behind it. But I think that for me, "The Love I Lost" is the show-stealer. Dimitri pretty much said in the liner notes that he wanted to share this material with all of us, and I want to thank him for that. I still remember the day I found his music, and it has gotten me through the past 5 years in this increasingly dark and desperate world that we all find ourselves in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dimitri Captures the Essence of Disco Once Again! January 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This compilation is great because it makes you feel good! The grooves here are vivacious, contagious, and outrageous!
I had never heard 'Living Together' by The Jacksons, but it is refreshingly familiar. Dimitri's re-edit smooths it our just enough. The great Teddy Pendergrass (R.I.P.) is well-represented here. His amazing voice shakes you to your very core in the acapella intro to 'The Love I Lost' (the seminal track which basically set down the rules for disco). Charles Mann's cover of the great Steely Dan track 'Do It Again' finally re-presents a thoroughly danceable version of this FM album track staple.
On a recent party on my friend's boat, these CD's were in heavy rotation along with many other Dimitri collections.
You simply cannot go wrong with these amazing discs. Maybe Dim will bless us with a bonus DVD next time as he did with an enhanced CD on the Defected 'In The House' collection. I noticed the price went up three times within the week I purchased it, so act fast as you may end up paying close to list price!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it! July 21, 2010

The best compilation from Dimitri from Paris. I was so happy when I heard that he will release that compilation with bbe records. The second cd (mixed) is better then original songs which is sometimes hard to acomplish, because original is original, but well done for Mr. Dimitri.
If you like soul, funky rhythm then this is for you. I love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Got down again September 7, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I know every song backwards and forwards. Was MOST tickled by the 2010 reworkings. "The Love I Lost", it completely blew me away! In 1997 I had a big party commerating the NYC blackout of 1977. The only reason I had this party was because of the song "Where Were You?", which I remembered from then. All the music was from 1977 - a real disco palloza. About 3/4 of the way through the party - and I'm not kiddiong - the lights went out. A circuit blew and shot a spark into my dance floor area. Half the people ran out and went home; absolutely terrified. The other half stayed and partied on. The only circuit left was running the refrigerator, the music and one air conditioner. The mirror ball was still turning, but wasn't lit. One guest got a flashlight and held it on the mirroe ball for the next three hours. HONOR THE POWER OF MUSIC!
