Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gino Wickman's first book Traction, describing his Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), is already one of the great improvement game plans for business owners in America. Here, in his new brainstorm with coauthor Mike Paton, he takes entrepreneurial readers through a single story to show how every advantage of implementing EOS can actually become a practical reality in their own businesses. I would absolutely read both books together."
Dan Sullivan, Founder of Strategic Coach®

“Over the years I’ve heard countless testimonials from entrepreneurs who swear by Gino Wickman’s first book, Traction, but only after reading Get A Grip did I see clearly how implementing his Entrepreneurial Operating System could truly transform a business and put it on the road to greatness. This book will change your company—and your life.”
Bo Burlingham, Editor-at-Large of Inc. magazine, Author of Small Giants: Companies That Choose to Be Great Instead of Big

About the Author

Gino Wickman's passion is helping people get what they want from their businesses. To fulfill that passion, Wickman created the Entrepreneurial Operating System(R) (EOS), a holistic system that, when implemented in an organization, helps leaders run better businesses, get better control, have better life balance, and gain more traction--with the entire organization advancing together as a healthy, functional, and cohesive team. Wickman spends most of his time as an EOS Implementer, working hands-on with the leadership teams of entrepreneurial companies to help them fully implement EOS in their organizations. He is the founder of EOS Worldwide, a growing organization of successful entrepreneurs from a variety of business backgrounds collaborating as certified EOS Implementers to help people throughout the world to experience all the organizational and personal benefits of implementing EOS. He also delivers workshops and keynote addresses. The product of an entrepreneurial household, Mike Paton has spent much of his 30-year career helping hundreds of entrepreneurs get what they want from their businesses. He ran or helped run four entrepreneurial companies before discovering the Entrepreneurial Operating System(R) (EOS). Drawn to its simple, timeless concepts and practical, real-world tools, Paton quickly decided to devote himself to helping other business owners and leaders master this complete "way of operating" an entrepreneurial organization. Since then he's conducted more than 400 full-day EOS sessions for the leadership teams of more than 60 companies, and has helped thousands more business leaders clarify, simplify, and achieve their vision by delivering dynamic keynote talks and interactive workshops.

Sometimes the simplest, most common sense solutions are the strongest. A series of tools based on goals (yours) values (yours), communication and trust emerge throughout this book that is crammed full of insight and aha moments. Wherever your company is in it's journey - if you're "stuck", frustrated, or just plain having those problems with humans in your organization, please pick up this book. As an entrepreneur and owner, I am on the "verge" of great growth and I know that this is a book that I will go back to again and again for tools and insight.

Things like the "people analyzer" show you how to set the benchmark, hire, counsel and fire for those that fit your culture, how to effectively create a culture, communicate it and live it, strategies for 90 days, 1 year, 3 year and 10 year plans. . . well, you get the picture. Read it, implement those ideas that will be useful to you, and grow. Have a great company. The one you always wanted. The one you envisioned. And. . . dare I say it. . . one that does not keep you awake at night.

Great job!! I have to admit, I was skeptical; but it is a good read and a huge help when implementing the system. It follows the EOS implementation process exactly as it should be implemented and points out how to deal with issues along the way. There is no filler. It is all substance.

A story about an organization with all the trials and tribulations that we all face as business owners, leaders, and managers. While their problems are typical and predictable it just goes to show there is hope. The team decides to implement a very simple set of practical tools to help them get more from their business. That set of tools is EOS. Its a great easy read that most of us can relate to.

Business growth and success are some of the most difficult things to achieve; more than most entrepreneurs think. The struggles of dealing with personnel, insufficient profits, and an ever increasing lack of focus; not to mention the day-to-day complexities of business make running an enterprise a challenge, to say the least.

Gino Wickman and Mike Paton, in their book "Get a Grip: An Entrepreneurial Fable... Your Journey to Get Real, Get Simple, and Get Results", write a real world tale of a fictional organization and how it addresses and resolves its issues by knowing when to ask for help from a proven outsider (Alan). Characters Eileen Sharp and Victor Hightower, the co-founders of the fictional Swan Services, were in a tough spot, losing income and opportunities. Through coworkers like Carol - the controller, who was not able to see change as a good thing, and Sue - head of marketing, who could only see herself to blame for the downturn in business, we see every day examples of what it can be like trying to balance different viewpoints, and opinions in a corporate environment. By following the suggestion of adopting the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), the executives of Swan Services begin to build their success and turn around their operation.

Though the examples are fictional, entrepreneurs may well find this book a sound guide to dealing with the intricacies of daily business obstacles and overcoming adversity in an organized, effective way. "Get A Grip" picks up where "Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business" (a previous book by the authors) leaves off, focusing on the applying the principals of EOS to a typical everyday services company.

I highly suggest this book to any entrepreneur that has a growing business who is having challenges making sense of all the new (and bigger) moving pieces and decisions. It is one of three books I require everyone who joins our team to read.

This book helps you create a system to run your organization. I suggest that every business has a product or service they provide, which requires a system for providing it; and also has a system needed for running the organization (which most people fail to realize). This book provides that system.

One suggestion . . . I would read the book and decide whether you are willing to go "all in". I wouldn't suggest taking bits and pieces of this book and attempting to work it into your system. This will require you to change everything from the cadence of your organization, to the language your team uses. I suggest that it will be well worth it.

As Humans, we think in pictures and relate to concepts in stories.

If you are a business owner with a leadership team, you will smile and nod your head as you read this book. It is fun, you can plod through it and smile at each detailed description or you can skim it, recognizing the lessons you have seen in the past.....

There are two books in this series,

Traction, which is the How To, step by step guide on to how to get a grip on your business.

and now:

Get A Grip, which wraps stories around the Traction Tools giving us insight into how it all works together.

The stories come from thousands of days "in the room" with leadership teams who are implementing Traction in their business.

A fun read for any business owner who is tired of Dysfunction, lack of Accountability and poor Cash Flow.

Walt
