Book Description

March 1997 Play the Game
Explore and understand the practical side of the martial arts with this new starter guide to the basics and beyond. A black belt instructor and a former national champion team up to take the enthusiastic beginner toward competition-level ability. Combining fitness, technique, and mental preparation, every move is fully explained, along with advice and instruction from the experts -- all illustrated with easy-to-understand drawings, plus action photos of world-class competitors in championship form. The traditional code of karate behavior is emphasized, as are the "three K's" -- kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Detailed descriptions are given of the key elements of power, breathing, and mental awareness, the various techniques of action, fitness and mobility, and the proven methods of preparing for competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good For The Advanced Shotokan Karateka, April 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Get to Grips With Competition Karate: A Guide to Training for Competition (Play the Game) (Paperback)
This is not a book of "How To" competition techniques. It is about flexibility, foot-work and advanced kicks. The 6/7 fighting techniques are not for karateka below 3rd Kyu. If you are a serious traditional Karateka who wants to train for kumite, this is a good buy.
