Biography

Judy Garland's career was one of contrasts; her best-loved songs -- bold and blissful -- were underlined with fragility and melancholy, and for each of her moments in the spotlight, her life had a dark spot. Still, for many fans of pop vocals, as well as drag queens everywhere, Garland defines the essence of the movie musical. Her bright vocals are soaring, indelible reminders of this screen… Read more in Amazon's Judy Garland Store

Editorial Reviews

The two CDs in this package contain separate collections of Judy Garland performances of the 1950s and '60s. Disc one is a compilation of duets drawn from television programs, almost all of them from the 1963-1964 series The Judy Garland Show, the sole exception being a medley of "Let There Be Love" and "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" sung with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra that derives from a 1962 special also entitled The Judy Garland Show. The sound quality is terrific, the arrangements bold and brassy, and the guest stars enthusiastic in teaming with Garland. This material, which apparently is being licensed more or less indiscriminately by the estate of Garland's third husband, Sid Luft, to any label willing to pay the fee, is also available in one form or another on many other reissues, but this one is well-put-together, with the tracks segueing seamlessly together as if this were one long, all-star show. Disc two has also turned up on many other discs. It is the private recording made of Garland's final show of her 1951-1952 engagement at the Palace Theater in New York. Here, too, the sound quality is much better than it has been on previous issues, but this is still a fan-only performance on which the singer is sometimes off-mic or communicating with her adoring audience in ways not apparent simply from the audio. In her spoken remarks, Garland is often out of breath and seemingly absent-minded, but her singing is usually powerful. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget your troubles, c'mon GET HAPPY!, June 18, 2002

I bought this 2-CD set in celebration that Judy Garland would have been 80 on June 10th,2002. She was born 1922. What a sad life but what a wonderful legacy. This CD is the same as the JUDY DUETS CD, but is MUCH cheaper! The cover art is not that special at all.
The CD's are great. I'm not a big duet fan from THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW, but some are Timeless such as the Barbra Streisand one and a few more. LIVE FROM THE PALACE is my favorite. Hear Judy perform all of her hits from 1932 to 1950! This was before "The Man That Got Away" and "That's Entertainment!".
This CD should be in your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars same record as 'Judy Duets - 75th b'day...', October 18, 2002

I bought my copy of Duets in London, pressed by Eagle Records/EDGDC122. Duets is nicely remastered and packaged, has a glossy booklet full of comments and pics of the TV performances that help them come to live -not that they need much help! Has become one of my fav Garland CDs. I would fully recommend it -I don't know if the other pressings have glossy enclosures

4.0 out of 5 stars Duets disc makes it great, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Get Happy (Audio CD)
This 2-CD set was a nice addition to my Judy Garland collection, since I had a lot of her studio work, but had little of her concert or duet recordings. In my opinion the first disc of this, where Judy duets with others on her 1963 TV series "The Judy Garland Show," is easily the highlight of this set. Even the chat and banter between Judy and the other singers is endearing and often funny. The second disc, a 1952 concert at the Palace Theatre in England, is well worth having, but on some songs Judy was in somewhat uneven voice, especially her breath control. However, most numbers come off very well, such as the "A Couple of Swells" number, where Judy was clearly having a lot of fun in a duet with a male singer. A better concert disc in terms of both performance and sound quality is her famous Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition recording from the early 1960s, unless you have that already. As far as the sound quality of GET HAPPY is concerned, both discs are in decent mono, although the duets disc is much more professionally recorded, with better microphone placement and lower distortion. Actually, I would give the duets disc 5 stars, and the concert disc 3, so I gave the overall set 4 stars as a result.
