Many Photoshop users don't need to know every obscure capability within the program. So to this ends, the book concentrates on explaining what it considers to be the core, most used features of Photoshop. Ideally, it addresses all your needs, if you just use Photoshop for your personal needs, as opposed to being a professional designer.
So rather than thumbing through a thousand page manual, you can try using this book. The editing methods are simple - for rescaling, say, or tweaking the colour maps to enhance some colours. The other useful feature is the extensive list of common problems encountered by users. Each is matched with a straightforward solution. It's worth going through these to see if one addresses your situation.
