Editorial Reviews

From the 2010 major motion picture featuring Academy Award® winner Robert Duvall, Golden Globe winner Bill Murray, Academy Award® winner Sissy Spacek, and Lucas Black, Get Low follows the story of the mysterious 1930s Tennessee hermit who famously threw his own rollicking funeral party...while he was still alive. The soundtrack combines an all-star cast of musicians. Academy Award® winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek's dramatic score is both moving and haunting. 12 time Grammy winner and the world's most renowned Dobro player, Jerry Douglas, sweeps us away to the Southern countryside with his authentic jams. Grammy nominated and IBMA award winning band The SteelDrivers enliven the mood with their bluegrass renditions of traditional folk songs. 25 time Grammy winner Alison Krauss' beautiful closing song leaves the audience with a tear in their eye, but a smile on their face. The rest of the soundtrack is wonderfully appointed with vintage classics from The Ink Spots, Gene Austin, Paul Whiteman and Bix Beiderbecke.

I just saw Robert Duvall's latest film, so the music soundtrack has relevence. But even if I hadn't seen Get Low, I would have bought it anyway. It's that good.

The album is an atmospheric mix of old-time, classic country and original bluegrass music performed by the premiere artists of those genres. You may already know the work of Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas, but if you've never heard The SteelDrivers before, this is your chance to be truly impressed by an exceptional bluegrass band. The gritty authenticity of lead singer Chris Stapleton's powerful voice will send chills up and down your spine.

More important, this nostalgic compilation reminds this former East Tennessean of some of the crusty individualists that still live in the mountains and hollers of Appalachia. Thus, I will play this album often, but especially when I'm headed back home.

For my the highlight of this album is The Steeldrivers. They completely steal the show. I would buy the album just for that. Not enough Alison Krauss i.m.o. she is advertised as being a focal point but doesn't have as many standout tunes as The Steeldrivers. I would still highly recommend this album, especially for Bix Beiderbecke's sensational Dixie tune "Looking for a Four Leaf Clover." I absolutely loved it!

If anybody is looking for the album super cheap you can get it used for like $6 or $7 on ebay [...]

The product is the CD of the original soundtrack to the film "Get Low". The film itself has all of the qualities that the soundtrack amplifies; humor, truth, sadness, irony and finally, personal redemption. The actors all perform in a superlative manner; true masters of their craft and exquisitely directed to achieve the best characterizations possible. The music and backing score that causes this genius undertaking to float mellowly towards the falls or rapids of self-illumination, is a well-chosen and charmingly composed blend of great segments of musical interludes. The action on the screen takes place in a rural setting, and of a past vintage, so the music reflects and exalts that circumstance. But rather than the category of "country" music, the body of the tracks would be more accurately described as "mountain" music.
The Inkspots performing "If I Didn't Care", is miles removed from "country" or "mountain", but fits here perfectly. As do some of the other non-mountain music selections; they might be tunes heard on the radio for those lucky enough to have electicity. The players of the somewhat mournful passages or the spirited romps, seem to enjoy the vibrancy of their sound, knowing it exemplifies a time gone by, but technically proficient.
The symphonic interludes, chosen to highlight some key elements in the story telling, are gentle and soothing, but nonetheless emotional and significant. These violin, rather than fiddle, solos set the stage for some visual fireworks that energize the flow of the story. A consumer would be very well served to entertain themselves with this offering. See the film; enjoy that, then relax with this CD and be transported back to a simpler time.

The movie was incredibly good, made more so by these songs. "Lay My Burden Down" sung by Alison Krauss is worth the purchase all by itself. But then you have The Steeldrivers and so much more! And Jan Kaczmarek has done some of the best movie scores ever (Unfaithful and Washington Park, to name only two), so I have to single him out for special mention.

The viewing public missed this one...the critical review was great, but it didn't generate much traffic in the theatre. Now you have a 2nd chance...see this movie, Duvall at his best, easily one of the greatest actors of his generation...

I loved the movie, the music, and therefore I love the sound track. If you are a bluegrass or a Robert Duvall fan, this CD is for you. Features the Steele Drivers, whom I love!

Love the music. Being from the applachia area, the music sets the mood for driving through the mountains. Would recommend it to others who like country music.

Get Low is one of those films that I drag out every so often and watch again. The performances are the best of each actor's/actress's careers, in my opinion. Part of that perfection is surely the superb directing and much of it is the fact that you have a stellar and seasoned cast.
The scenery and sets are perfect. The musical score is perfect. This film is funny enough to be classified a comedy but is also a smart mystery and an intense human interest story. Everything about this film is just plain entertaining.
