I do not understand all the rave reviews for this book. It is a blatant self-promotion tool that doesn't offer a shred of practical management advice. The reader gets fantastic advice such as "Golf is good," "Networking is good," "What's important to you at the lower levels is not not important to me," followed by story after story of his amazing accomplishments. Mr Fuchs needs to reread rule #16 in his appendix B: "Self-promotion embarrasses those who do it. If you are a true success, people will know. You don't have to tell them." Ironic, isn't it?

Sid Fuchs', "Get Off the Bench", is a handy, easy-to-read book about the do's and don't's of networking, as well as the value and importance of building effective relationships in professional business environments. A work written for professionals at all levels, Mr. Fuchs wrote this book using sincere and unpretentious language, leaving the reader with valuable lessons about not only networking, but also about life relationships in general. Resounding themes include helpful hints such as, 'it is more blessed to give than receive", and were obviously written from the heart, because this notion is repeated a number of times, albeit in a subtle fashion -- I think, because it is the way Mr. Fuchs conducts himself in his very successful professional and personal (from what I know) life. The book is instructive and useful without sounding lofty or condescending. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to be added to any working professional's library, and should be shared with those whom we mentor, or seniors whom we look up to and admire whom may have mentored us. This book is a "keeper" - for professionals, for life.

First off, I can't wait to put what I learned in this book to use. A great and quick read. Sid masterfully details the benefits of being "plugged in" to your network. The book is a fast-paced read with great summaries and tips. The book went well beyond just basic networking. It demonstrated practical reasons why inter-personal relationships are important. It brought Dale Carnegie type social and communication skills into the modern world, and showed you how to use Franklin Covey type leadership and relationship building in everyday business and personal relationships. Sid writes in straight-forward language describing the behind-the-scenes keys to success in anything you do - building relationships. Even if you never plan to network, the principles in this book are timeless: take a genuine interest in people, remain humble, give more than you receive, etc. Just employing these techniques with the people you currently know and work with will undoubtedly improve those relationships, and who knows where those will go once you start to apply what you learn in this book. The real-world application of this book is what makes learning and applying these principles easy to understand and actually do.

It is a great motivator to finally get involved in networking and start deliberately charting my own course.

I highly recommend Sid Fuchs' insightful book to anyone who doesn't yet appreciate the value of networking, as well as those who think they do but are not quite sure how to do it. Whatever I thought I knew about the subject, I thank Sid for giving me that much more. He makes great use of interesting examples to make a persuasive case for networking, and provides practical and thoughtful advice on how to network. Even a history major like me could connect, for example, with Sid's computer analogies, which vividly painted a picture of how standing alone is simply not as effective as connecting through networks. His hints about the niceties of sending handwritten notes, rather than simply emailing to follow up with contacts, really hit the mark in my view. Especially in sending notes of thanks, those more comfortable working in a text/tweet environment should take note -- there are people at the other end of the message. I learned a lot from the book, which is easy and enjoyable to read as well as instructive. I've already urged my son, who just finished his first year in business school, to read it. Sid, as always, makes a lot of sense.

Learn from a pro! A successful business executive, Sid Fuchs, writes "that it takes more than just being smart or going to the right schools to succeed." Sid's method encourages you to engage with people without abandoning your natural personality. Introverts and novices will find this is a practical guide to expanding their networks. A refreshing and simple premise of having a curiosity about the people around you no matter what level, title or position they hold, makes building a strategic relationship driven network approachable.

Sid's personal stories of success and failure are realistic examples that illustrate concepts and skills to employ and to avoid while taking your own networking journey. Each chapter wraps up with bulleted takeaways that don't overwhelm the beginner and offer a day to day strategy for networking success.

A great book and a good reminder of the value of relationships in the business world!
