5.0 out of 5 stars The REAL Body For Life
While the title of this book certainly gets your attention, Body for Life would have been an appropriate title had someone else not taken it first.
The author does not show people how to transform their bodies in 12 weeks; he wants us to change our behavior, especially eating and exercising and do it for the rest of our lives, not 12 weeks, 12 months or 12...

1.0 out of 5 stars the most insulting book ever!
This is the most disgusting, insulting book I have ever read. Not only is Marty Tuley completely prejudiced against anyone fat, if you go to his website and look at pictures of him and his fellow "personal trainers", you will see women on the verge of starvation, and a freakishly muscular man. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! It's stupid. No one needs to be that thin...

While the title of this book certainly gets your attention, Body for Life would have been an appropriate title had someone else not taken it first.
The author does not show people how to transform their bodies in 12 weeks; he wants us to change our behavior, especially eating and exercising and do it for the rest of our lives, not 12 weeks, 12 months or 12 years.
He starts us slowly having us build the discipline we need to work out and eat right before we do anything else. The way the workouts progress is almost ridiculously slow, but look at it this way: By the time most people have given up on their more extensive workouts, you're just getting started.
By his own admission, Tuley does not tell us anything new or revolutionary. Most of the diet and exercise information he tells us, we already know. And he knows we already know it. But sometimes the best coaches are not the ones who come up with new plays or strategies, but the ones who effectively teach the basics and motivate their charges to get the most out of themselves.
Tuley is that kind of coach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get off your ass! Not nonsense, common sense..., June 14, 2002
By
Douglas Macron (NY, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Off Your Ass! (Paperback)
In a market littered with fad exercise equipment and get-thin-quick snake oils, Marty Tuley's book Get Off Your Ass! is a refreshing kick in the pants.

Tuley refuses to coddle his audience by telling them that the road to fitness is an easy one that can be traveled without breaking a sweat. Instead, he straightfowardly asserts the trite but true aphorism 'no pain, no gain.'

At the same time, Tuley understands that the average man will reject, and in fact does not require, an overly demanding fitness regimen. He eases the reader into an exercise program that is designed to build a better life and body, not stacks of muscle.

He also helps the reader learn that true fitness requires a change in lifestyle, not just sporatic trips to the gym.

That said, it is important to note that Tuley's book is not for everyone. An already active person looking to enhance his training needs to look elsewhere.

This book is for beginners only, but can work wonders for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts The Typical American, December 4, 2002
By

This review is from: Get Off Your Ass! (Paperback)
I read the book, I believe that I was the one Marty Tuley was talking about. When I read the book I felt as if I was getting advice from a personal trainer.Plus I did not have to pay a fee to get the information. If you want to lose weight read this book. The book is brutually honest and it does not take much to follow Marty's program.

I hope Marty has a good legal defense team. I think all of these wonder machines are going to try and blame him for the people not buying their ... products.

ONE MORE TIME FOLkS IF YOU NEED HELP AND WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT BUY THE BOOK!!!...

Marty, it is about time someone told the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is he serious?...really?, June 13, 2002

This review is from: Get Off Your Ass! (Paperback)
Yes! He seriously wants to help the average American battle the bulge. Don't be afraid if you haven't moved from behind the desk in a long time, for GET OFF YOUR ASS is written for you.

GET OFF YOUR ASS is an easy read with just enough wit to shock and motivate. It is NOT an overwhelming medical text that gets you lost in the big picture as you struggle with the details of the finer workings of the lower intestine.(Who really cares?) Mr. Tuley is not afraid to voice things we have always known but are too scared to say. The chapters are short and full of relevant, useful information. There are even helpful photos!

This book has something for everyone. As someone who has been working out for the past 3 years, this book even motivates me. The basic bare truths do not go away and the author really knows how to say what I need to hear to get me off my ass!

"There are a thousand books out there, and even more opinions. However, when it comes right down to, you could read every book on the shelf, and listen to every so called expert, but it's all worthless if you don't GET OFF YOUR ASS!"

Thank you, Marty Tuley!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Holistic Approach to Fitness, June 11, 2002
By
Matt McGhee (Lawrence, KS USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Off Your Ass! (Paperback)
Easy to read, to the point, educational, sometimes painfully truthful. These are the words I would use to describe this book. The author has written this book for the "non-fit" person, instead of the "fitness enthusiast" as many health publications are written for. "Non-fit" individuals have either never exercised, or it has been 10 or 20 years. Any knowledge they have of exercise is outdated or most likely wrong. Instead of "jumping" back into an exercise program full bore, which leads to failure upwards of 80% of the time, the author suggests a different approach....a drastically different one. No exercise whatsoever for the first month! He simply wants you to get in the habit of going to bed earlier and getting up earlier...for the times when you DO exercise. Establishing these habits is the first step to successful lifestyle change. Makes sense doesn't it?

One of the many things I like about this book other than simple readability is it's explanation of all the facets of fitness. They are education, nutrition, and exercise. Not necessarily in that order, but without all three, your "fitness" is lacking. Without education, you wouldn't know what exercise is right for YOU. Without proper nutrition, you sabotage your exercise efforts and "cheat" your body of what it deserves. Without exercise, well, enough said.

This book will get you excited about changing your lifestyle, make no mistake about it. If it doesn't, then the author would probably tell you to stay on your [rear] and continue to be miserable, fat, and not able to play ball with your son ever again. Sometimes the truth hurts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fitness Motivator, June 1, 2002
This review is from: Get Off Your Ass! (Paperback)
Reading "Get Off Your Ass!" by Marty Tuley is like having your own personal fitness trainer. He doesn't mince words; just "tells it like it is." No excuses, no make-believe. This is the hardcore truth. Marty is by turns your best friend (who will tell you the truth even if you're not sure you want to hear it), the man who sees into your heart, and a merciless drill instructor. Take this book home; take it to heart; it will change your life.

This review is from: Get Off Your Ass: The Definitive Guide to Losing Weight, Eating Healthy, and Living Longer... for Real People (Paperback)
Some of the reviewers express indignation at Mr. Tuley for being so blunt, but I would say he calls them as he sees them, without any of this politically correct nonsense like referring to being fat as "weight challenged." Fat is fat. He is right, we all wouldn't be reading his book unless we felt that we needed to get into shape so let's stop fooling ourselves. To the reviewer who was offended by the pictures of the people on Tuley's website: the book is NOT about trying to make yourself super muscular or super slim, it is about trying to get you into the habit of taking care of your body and your health on an ongoing basis for the rest of your life, instead of flitting from one fad diet to another, or undertaking extreme exercise programs. He includes a real-life example of a man he coached, showing before and after pictures. But unlike most before/after examples, the "after" man is in obviously better shape but he is definitely no superman. He even admits that he has a ways to go, but the point is that he is on the right track.

Personally I think the author says some things just for shock value, but overall, this book is very direct and doesn't mince words. He says what needs to be said without adding a bunch of pages for fluff. The book stresses a balance between exercising, eating properly/nutrition, and educating oneself to live a healthier life. It's a "back to basics" book that contains no gimmicks and is up front about the fact that getting into good shape is not easy and it takes perserverance. Anyone who thinks there is an easy way is only fooling themselves.

Yes, the truth may be hard to take but if we don't face up to it and take responsibility for our actions, we'll just keep looking for the easy way out, as it sounds like some of the prior whining reviewers did. This book is worth reading - it is short, easy to understand, and in my opinion offers good advice. The other thing the author tells us is that he will only go so far as to telling us what to do, and then we need to continue to educate and think for ourselves instead of blindly following this guru or that guru.

4.0 out of 5 stars More in-your-face clever than revolutionary., January 15, 2007

This review is from: Get Off Your Ass: The Definitive Guide to Losing Weight, Eating Healthy, and Living Longer... for Real People (Paperback)
Marty Tuley would be the first to say, you already know you need to move more and eat less. Most of us realize what we need to do, we just don't do it. This book is like having a drill sergeant yell at you from the pages of the book.

Tuley's message is simple, and for those who need a kick in the butt rather than a pat on the back, this book could be a godsend. However, it is very sloppily edited and proofread (there are inconsistencies and contradictions of sets and rep ranges throughout the book).

The eating program is the clean eating you see about everywhere (i.e. lean proteins, smart fats, low glycemic carbs from whole grains and low sugar fruits and vegetables); don't eat late at night; fuel frequently; watch your portion sizes.

The exercises ramp up over a month or so, eventually working toward 15 minutes of movement, and 15 minutes of strength training three times a week. There is no mention of stretching. The strength training is a combination of bodyweight exercises (e.g. push-ups, sumo squats) and compound weightlifting moves (bench press, back rows, etc.). There is no explanation of how to vary the workout over time, something that's important to keep your body guessing.

Also, it should be noted, I wrote to Mr. Tuley to ask if I should change to intervals for my 15 minutes of movement to take the program to the next level. He was nice enough to write back but didn't even answer my question with a "yes" or "no"; he offered to design a new program for me for $500. I realize he's in the business to make money, but it was a disappointing response.

One more positive from the book is that Mr. Tuley seems to genuinely care about the growing problem of childhood obesity. He's working to try and keep more schools from dropping PE.
