Editorial Reviews

'The Godfather of Soul.' 'The Hardest Working Man in Show Business.' 'Mr. Dynamite.' 'Soul Brother Number One.' For more than 50 years, these and other honorifics have described American music icon James Brown.

GET ON UP: The James Brown Story - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features studio and standout live versions of many of Brown's top soul/funk hits- from his first, 1956's 'Please Please Please' to 'Out Of Sight,' 'I Got You (I Feel Good),' 'Try Me,' 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag,' 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World,' and 'Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine.' Also included are two previously unreleased concert recordings heard in the new film that is in theaters nationwide on August 1. These live, spine-tingling performances of 'Please Please Please' and 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World' were recorded at the historic Fort Homer W. Hesterly Armory in Tampa, Florida on April 23, 1966.

In 1986, James Brown was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a charter member. A multiple GRAMMY® Award winner, Brown was honored with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992, and in 2003 he received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. Brown died on Christmas Day 2006 at the age of 73.

"Get On Up: The James Brown Story - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (20 tracks; 73 min.) brings the full versions of the songs that are featured in the movie. The movie is a long overdue biopic, reportedly 2 decades in the making due to never-ending development problems, on one of the greatest American musicians, right up there with Johnny Cash and Ray Charles (who of course have gotten their own well-deserved biopic some years ago). The movie, by the way, is co-produced by none other than Mick Jagger (technically: his development company).

Standing on its own, this soundtrack is a fantastic collection of the very best of James Brown. I say that because this is the first single-CD compilation that brings the best of both his studio output AND his live output. It is no coincidence that 9 of the 20 tracks on here are live tracks. The soundtrack starts off with a ferocious "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine", still his signature song to this day. On track 6, we get an unreleased live track (from 1966 in Tampa), the soulful "Please Please Please". Later we get another unreleased live track from that same show, "It's a Man's Man's Man's World"). There are also several tracks from the legendary "Live At the Apollo" set (I would readily recommend that 1963 live album in a heartbeat if you don't have that yet), including a delicious "Night Train". But the KEY sequence on here surely is, deep into the album, the 1-2-3 punch of live versions of "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine," "Super Bad," and "Soul Power", which will blow you away. In case you wonder: only "Get Up" and "Please Please Please" are featured twice on here, all the other songs are either studio or live.

OMG, it is high time for a James Brown moment. People might overlook this new release because it is a soundtrack album. In truth, all the songs are originals from "THE MAN" himself -or- killer live versions from the 60's or 70's, all remastered in stereo to sound amazingly good. If you have a worn copy of "Startime" or "20 All Time Hits" than this is your upgrade. I can't wait to see the movie (opens Aug 1) and really hope it ranks with great music biopics "Ray" and "Walk The Line". There was no one like James and you'll hear funk being invented on these tracks. Forty one years ago a young black man I worked with in Florida told me that over the weekend he went to Miami to see "THE MAN". He never called him by his name and in conversation would only refer to him as THE MAN. Check out the slightly-extended version of the classic "Cold Sweat". A few seconds have been added at the beginning- James demonstrates to the band what a "pop" is.

The soundtrack to "Get On Up" is great! This is a great movie soundtrack to one of the most anticipated films of the summer and of the year, as well. This is also a great movie soundtrack to one of the most anticipated biopics (James Brown) in years. All (20) tracks on here are great.

I actually experienced the new bio-pic on James Brown in reverse order from most folks. About a week ago I attended a press screening of the film "Get On Up". Then - this week I got the CD. The film doesn't open until tomorrow (August 1, 2014) and I'm not writing a review of the film here - though, I'll say that JB fans will want to see for the acting and the performances but the script could use a little work - and it is long - 137 minutes. But now to the CD.

What is a "soundtrack? The definition keeps changing.

As you may, or may not, know , actor Chadwick Boseman lip-synchs the words to the original recordings of JB. So, the "Sound Track" on the screen consists of JB's original recordings. But, other reviews I saw posted here say this CD consists of remastered recordings of JB classics. And that's only partly correct.

There are 20 tracks on this 73-minute (!) album. 15 of those tracks are remastered versions of the original recordings - and are not necessarily which Boseman is lip-synching to. And having those remastered songs alone would make this a fine CD. But five of the tracks (tracks 5,6,9,18, and 19) are "recordings with new production and arrangements by The Underdogs". (this from the press release). Still fine, but NOT original recordings. And, for the record (no pun intended), two of those tracks (6 and 9 - "Please Please Please" and "It's a Man's World", are from previously unissued live performances recorded in Tampa Florida on 4/23/1966.

The CD comes with an eight-page color booklet of scenes from the film and a track list. The only other page with words is the one listing ALL: the personnel on the recordings - including the originals and the "new production" tracks.
