Product Description

Detect potentially dangerous acetylene, butane, methane (natural gas), and propane leaks with this lightweight, pocket-sized, portable gas detector. When harmful gases are detected at levels greater than 5% Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), this detector emits an audible alarm and activates a three-stage LED indicator. Use the Portable Gas Detector to detect potential gas leaks in pipes, fittings, valves, gas storage tanks, propane barbecue grills, home appliances and hot water heaters. No calibration is required for the lifetime of the product. Over molded elastomeric rubber provides a no-slip grip. Powered by 2 AA batteries (not included).

In fact, all it does it beep with false positives.

The leak detector is okay for stove or grill leaks but not what I needed it for, that is , leak from the gas tank.

Then the yellow LED would stay on after the warmup period.

Well, I got this little gizmo and all was well for about 5 minutes. Then the yellow LED would stay on after the warmup period.

As a guy that designs things like this I couldn't resist taking it apart and seeing what was up. Oh, and there goes the warranty!

It turns out that this device is prone to drift and misalignment. The engineer that designed this should have lost his job as it is very sloppy.

Anyway, the fix for all of this was adjusting a small potentiometer located on the printed circuit board. You have to disassemble the product, get a small slotted screwdriver and adjust VR1 until the green LED triggers. All this after that 10 second warmup period. Due to that goofy drift issue in the design you may have to repeat this process a couple of times. My advice is to drill a hole in the plastic for easy access in future.

Now the good news: After this "alignment" operation the unit does work well. I ran tests under controlled conditions and the device was able to "sniff" out small propane leaks. I was impressed.

And, the best part, I was able to track down and repair a vexing propane leak in my Westfalia camper.

So the upshot is it really works well after you fiddle with it. Most people will just get aggravated and send it back.

PG&E technician put this directly into a stream of natural gas coming out of the pipe. Still didn't work.

Slow and not as good as my nose, but gets in places I can put my nose. As a gas safety tool beats a open flame, and probably soapy water.

Defective upon arrival. Just does it's warmup cycle and then beeps continuously whether there is gas or not. Judging by other reviews, there seems to be a high percentage of defects for this tool. Needless to say, I am unhappy as I waited 6 days for it and hoped to get some things done over my vacation which now won't happen unless I pay for expedited shipping for another unit.

Didn't work right out of the box. Should have paid attention to the review comments. Product went through its initial 10 second warm up cycle then immediately and continually flashed yellow and sounded audible alarm regardless of location, inside or out.

Well, I originally purchased this product to check for a gas leak. Bingo it was there alright plus oven burner flaw but pipe leading to the oven. I further checked myself not having to wait all day for PGE to show-up the other furnace and water heater and found vent leaking gas back into the basement. I'm so grateful for this helpful product and may have saved my son from further fuel exhaust poisoning into his home.

I had to put the device right over my gas grill with the gas open to get it to alert.

Item arrived defective. After the 10 second warm-up period the Detector audibly alarms continuously and displays a yellow gas-detected light continuously even when hundreds of feet from any gas source. This false warning occurs whenever the unit is turned on.
