4.0 out of 5 stars Change of direction - not better, not worse - just different, May 22, 2003
By
This review is from: Get Over It (Audio CD)
Okay. I was very disappointed when I first heard this album. Why? Guess because the changeover from Paul Gilbert to Richie Kotzen was one that had a huge impact on Mr Big's overall sound. From Paul's heavy, more metallic style to Richie's Hendrixy sounds and classic / southern rock stylings.

Consequently, it wasn't what I expected and I shelved the album. Till one fine day I really "listened" to it more objectively. And it grew on me. It's really a good album. Very different from Mr Big's previous albums, but definitely not worse.

So if you like seventies style classic rock, you should definitely check this out.

If you absolutely must have Paul Gilbert, check out the new stuff he's doing with Racer X. That's always Paul at his very best.

4.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS GOOD STUFF!, July 3, 2000
This review is from: Get Over It (Audio CD)
Mr. Big's "Get Over It" is a very solid album. Thisband produces a consistent product, in that, they always have their own sound that is recognizable and the whole CD is worthy of a spin on a regular basis. I personally feel their lyrics keep improving with age. This CD is no exception. They have adopted a new guitarist for this effort, Richie Kotzen. Richie is a successful guitarist and solo artist who has played with other notable bands such as Poison. He replaces former guitarist Paul Gilbert. He seems to have stepped in and filled the gap Paul Gilbert's absence has created without any difficulty. He also has had a significant impact on the songwriting, having written or co-written seven of the eleven tracks on the CD. Richie has a very blues oriented background, and there is definitely a bluesy flavor to this album, somewhat like Great White. Great White also manages to be a ROCK band but definitely has a touch of blues in their music. Overall, I would say this album is a well worthwhile addition to your CD collection. I really like the whole overall quality of this CD. I rate it four stars because I don't think it is the absolute BEST of Mr. Big, but DEFINITELY an above average effort. Pick up your copy of "Get Over It" and then check out some of your other favorite bands. You may be pleased to find that many of the melodic hard rock bands have 1999-2000 releases. "Don't wait for a better day. Or you won't get there at all." - Kane Roberts

4.0 out of 5 stars STILL ONE OF THE BEST, November 19, 1999

This review is from: Get Over It (Audio CD)
In 1992, I heard 'To Be With You' and fell in love with the song. I then listened to the 'Lean Into It' album to which that song came from. I then purchased their preceding CD and realized that Mr.Big was a hidden treasure in the world of rock music. Now nearly 10 years and close to twelve studio and live album releases later I still find the Mr.Big quartet to be one of the best. What cannot be said about these guys that hasen't already been said? Eric Martin is a phenomenal vocalist and his diversity in how he can deliver is without question more evident here than any previous Mr.Big release to date. Billy Sheehan can't be touched onbass and, like a fine wine, has only gotten better in time. Pat Torpey's technique and fire on the drums is very powerful yet so understated at the same time that I don't think people really realize how good he actually is. And Ritchie Kotzen, who has always been a great guitarist in his own right, has finally found the chemistry he has both needed and has been looking for to make him complete and this album is a perfect illustration of how he has found that and a great deal more with Mr.Big.I do have a bit of resentment for the loss of Paul Gilbert who I think is more missed than a lot of people would like to let on. After close to 10 years together, I felt that as a group Mr.Big had finally peaked with a defined sound and style on their 'Hey Man' CD only to lose Paul and have to start over from scratch. 'Get Over It' is definitley a new experience for both the group and the fans who have known them from the start as it is both less heavy and ballad driven than all of their previous releases and stays with a constant sound and theme with a lot of bluesy overtones. Fortunately the sound works and, considering it is the first outing minus Paul, almost works to perfection. True Mr. Big fans will not be disappointed as they have not sacrificed their signature sound and trademark verses that brought them to the dance to begin with. On the same token though it is a mild departure from what we have come to know and, while in a lot of ways is a better product, anytime you start from scratch without a key member as a part of it, it then becomes a starting process all over again to find your new niche in regards to both the music and interaction within the band. That said however, everyone seems tobounce off of one anotherrather well here and kudos to Kotzen for blending in so well, so quickly and in such a harmonius fashion. No song iswithout its' strong pointsalthough 'Hole In The Sun','How Does It Feel', and 'My New Religeon' stand out as true achievements for theband, both for their lyrical content and as a perfect example of showcasing the brilliant new sounds they are capable of only with Kotzen as part of the group. In closing all I can say is if this "new" first outing for the group is as "superfantastic" as this album has turned out to be, only BIGGER and better things will come in the future from these guys with whatever they decide to do next. Highly reccomended!
