This book was a very interesting read for anyone thinking about getting pregnant. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already, even though it will probably be another year before we start trying. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the last section that is "just for men." I was very disappointed with this portion of the book and it left a sour feeling for me. While the book gave more science based information for women, it took a turn in talking to men in a "man-to-man" sort of way. The discussion about infidelity turns into this madness of don't cheat on your wife, though wives sometimes cheat on husbands, and how there are sometimes questions about who the father is....and so on. I felt like it was an episode of the Maury show or something. Men are just as stressed out as women about the whole pregnancy thing, and I feel that this portion of the book adds unnecessary stress. The book should have simply provided information about how to make good sperm and give support - the end. I think the chapter for men defeated the purpose of preparing both parents for creating a healthy and smart baby. I hope Dr. Lu reads this review and takes this into consideration for future editions.

This book was informative and helpful. It does not discuss HOW to get pregnant - i.e., fertility, timing, ovulation, etc. - but there are plenty of other books that do. Rather, this book covers everything a couple should do BEFORE trying to get pregnant, including starting on an exercise regime, getting to a healthy weight, eating the best possible diet and eliminating environmental toxins. It has lots of practical tips and is written in a very accessible style, but what I particularly liked is that also has proper footnotes to all of Dr. Lu's sources, so you can do your own follow-up research on the technical stuff, if you are so inclined.

My husband and I are thinking about starting a family soon and of course are very excited about the next step in our lives. We decided to get some preconception books to learn some more about how to get ourselves and our home ready to start trying. We are educated people who generally live a healthy lifestyle - mostly organic foods, natural cleaners, taking daily supplements. When we came across Dr. Lu's book we were thrilled since it looked great. When our package from amazon came we tore right into the books and started reading. Much to my dismay Dr. Lu's book, like many reviews here indicate, is SO overwhelming and SO scary that it is not helpful in any way. Most of the information in here one would know already if you are environmentally minded and health conscious at all. Dr. Lu makes it seem as though there is NO way for any normal parents-to-be to make a healthy, beautiful baby unless you move to the middle of the woods somewhere. We have friends with children who have NOT done any of the crazy things he has suggested - like moving if you live above or near a dry cleaners - and they have amazing children. The extremes in which he speaks could make any parents-to-be excessively nervous about what should be a wonderful and exciting time for any couple. We are both avid readers and don't usually take the time to write reviews about books - but I wanted to write a review for this book so that any people who are thinking about getting pregnant DO NOT purchase this book. Not only did it NOT help us, it scared me so much that we are returning it immediately. Getting pregnant and even the thought of it should be such a great time for a couple, and I believe it important to be informed and make as many positive changes in your home and life as you can to create a healthy baby, but being scared isn't the best way to get this wonderful journey started.

This is a great book. Simple, clear, informative - in fact, it is a great read for anyone, not just moms or dads-to-be. If you have any proclivities, allergies, diseases, etc. this book points out how they may have developed while in utero. Fascinating read and well written.

I am so glad I picked up this book. My husband and I are about 3 years out from having kids but the reading was perfectly timed. He stresses that pre-planning is just as important if not more important than prenatal care and he has convinced me. My husband and I are both extremely active and eat well but we too will begin to make adjustments due to the advice in this book for our baby who is still at least 3 years down the road. This book was a very interesting read, well written and not dry. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already. I am a researcher by heart so this book was a stress relief to me because it gave information in such a way that if I had more questions the answers were easy to find and made me feel prepared with the whole picture. I love that it is not emotional. I love the direct advice and lists. I feel like this book has a lot of common sense spilled out on the pages which I appreciate.

I LOVE the chapter for the men- it is so true there is not a lot of health advice out there for men especially in the realm of conceiving. I think a lot of people forget about the men- give me your sperm now go away. I think that men have a lot of concerns with fatherhood and I think that there are a lot of worries women don’t even consider.

I cannot stress how HIGHLY I recommend this to anyone who is planning to try to conceive in the near (or even better) distant future- the more time to prepare the better!
