At this point, however, it seems simply a scare tactic.

This book was a very interesting read for anyone thinking about getting pregnant. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already, even though it will probably be another year before we start trying. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the last section that is "just for men." I was very disappointed with this portion of the book and it left a sour feeling for me. While the book gave more science based information for women, it took a turn in talking to men in a "man-to-man" sort of way. The discussion about infidelity turns into this madness of don't cheat on your wife, though wives sometimes cheat on husbands, and how there are sometimes questions about who the father is....and so on. I felt like it was an episode of the Maury show or something. Men are just as stressed out as women about the whole pregnancy thing, and I feel that this portion of the book adds unnecessary stress. The book should have simply provided information about how to make good sperm and give support - the end. I think the chapter for men defeated the purpose of preparing both parents for creating a healthy and smart baby. I hope Dr. Lu reads this review and takes this into consideration for future editions.

This book was informative and helpful. It does not discuss HOW to get pregnant - i.e., fertility, timing, ovulation, etc. - but there are plenty of other books that do. Rather, this book covers everything a couple should do BEFORE trying to get pregnant, including starting on an exercise regime, getting to a healthy weight, eating the best possible diet and eliminating environmental toxins. It has lots of practical tips and is written in a very accessible style, but what I particularly liked is that also has proper footnotes to all of Dr. Lu's sources, so you can do your own follow-up research on the technical stuff, if you are so inclined.

My husband and I are thinking about starting a family soon and of course are very excited about the next step in our lives. We decided to get some preconception books to learn some more about how to get ourselves and our home ready to start trying. We are educated people who generally live a healthy lifestyle - mostly organic foods, natural cleaners, taking daily supplements. When we came across Dr. Lu's book we were thrilled since it looked great. When our package from amazon came we tore right into the books and started reading. Much to my dismay Dr. Lu's book, like many reviews here indicate, is SO overwhelming and SO scary that it is not helpful in any way. Most of the information in here one would know already if you are environmentally minded and health conscious at all. Dr. Lu makes it seem as though there is NO way for any normal parents-to-be to make a healthy, beautiful baby unless you move to the middle of the woods somewhere. We have friends with children who have NOT done any of the crazy things he has suggested - like moving if you live above or near a dry cleaners - and they have amazing children. The extremes in which he speaks could make any parents-to-be excessively nervous about what should be a wonderful and exciting time for any couple. We are both avid readers and don't usually take the time to write reviews about books - but I wanted to write a review for this book so that any people who are thinking about getting pregnant DO NOT purchase this book. Not only did it NOT help us, it scared me so much that we are returning it immediately. Getting pregnant and even the thought of it should be such a great time for a couple, and I believe it important to be informed and make as many positive changes in your home and life as you can to create a healthy baby, but being scared isn't the best way to get this wonderful journey started.

If you are looking for a straight-forward, list-driven, do- and do-not type of pregnancy planning book, this is it. It's full of important, easy-to-understand advice, much of which I am taking to heart as we begin to think about pregnancy. I like the top 10 lists. I think it is too simple and dry if you are looking for a book with a more emotional connection. I only gave it four stars because I think it can cause some women undue anxiety because some of what the author presents as big toxic monsters is simply unavoidable. Overall, I recommend this book as a supplement to other pregnancy books, not as a stand-alone.

This is a great book. Simple, clear, informative - in fact, it is a great read for anyone, not just moms or dads-to-be. If you have any proclivities, allergies, diseases, etc. this book points out how they may have developed while in utero. Fascinating read and well written.

I've bought several pre-pregnancy books (including What to Expect Before You're Expecting and Before Your Pregnancy) and this one is by far the best. It's certainly the most scientific and comprehensive. Not sure where some of the latest negative comments are coming from. I didn't find everything in the book online. In fact, I found the book a fascinating read packed with useful scientific findings, and I would trust a doctor who directs a preconception care clinic and who's been voted one of the best doctors in America more than everything I read online. I also didn't find the book scary. Quite the opposite. Each chapter gave simple, doable steps on how to improve your preconception health - from how to tune-up your immune system to how to detoxify your home to how to prepare the sperm, all backed up by research - which I found quite empowering. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to get pregnant this year.
