Excellent Book.,

This book provided just the information I was looking for in a "to the point" style. If you have an older boat with an odor problem, this book will help you diagnose and eliminate the problem. Well worth the money and I'd recommend it to anyone. True to it's title, this book is about getting rid of boat odors....I'm not sure why the person who wrote the negative review thought it was an installation manual.

Peggie has produced an outstanding guide for tracking down and eliminating funky smells on board.
The book is full of factual information and how to's. The humor is appropriate and quite funny without falling into the obvious traps. Highly recommended

Should have read it before the smell got bad,

Wished I would have read the book before things got smelly. This book helped me figure out both problems I was having, smelly hoses and dreadful odor from vent.

Only fair. Yes, it gets to the point. But it could be much better if the publisher had used a technical illustrator to help show the plumbing she talks about. What's a joker valve look like? How would you route a vented loop? What makes one deck vent shape better than another?
I got as much out of the doing article searches from SailNet.com, past issues of "Good Old Boat" magazine, and all the show-off Web sites out there as I did from reading the book.

Peggie Hall has long shared her expertise in a number of online fora. From time to time she has spoken at boat shows and similar events. In her book, she has gathered together in one place all the tremendous knowledge she has about black, gray, and potable water systems, and generally keeping your boat smelling nice.
Highly recommended book.

The holding tank odor on my boat was so intense that even the maggots were gagging. Before buying this book I tried frequent pumpouts with back flushes. That worked for a few days each time but the smell came back. I gathered ideas from other boat owners, boat mechanics and salesmen at the local boat store and tried them all. Nothing worked! In desperation, I bought the book and started doing the recommended solutions. As it turns out, my boat's problem was that spiders were clogging the vent opening. When I got rid of them the odor disappeared. The book provides solutions to several different types of odors in addition to holding tank odors. It also explains the causes for the odor. In the case of my holding tank, the spiders were blocking oxygen from entering the tank. The bacteria that eliminated the odor needed oxygen to work.

Back on the boat,
This review is from: Get Rid of Boat Odors: A Boat Owner's Guide to Marine Sanitation Systems and Other Sources of Aggravation and Odor (Paperback)
I recently purchased a used sail boat. Very quickly after getting it to our home port, my wife reprioritized my "to do list" and "get rid of the head odor" came to the top. Should be simple huh? Not really. Peggy Hall stepped me through understanding the problem and gave a clear description of a properly operating / plumbed system. Brand named product recommendations were also a terrific help! I'm 95% complete now and still hoping to get her "back on the boat"...

This book would be preventive to a new boat owner with no experience in boat maintenance.
It also helps a long time boat owner to find and alleviate problems with boat odors. Easy to understand. As long as we own a boat, we will keep this book for reference. |
