Biography

“There are singers,” said Ray Charles, “then there is Aretha. She towers above the rest. Others are good, but Aretha is great. She’s my only sure-enough sister.”

Since the moment Aretha stepped to the pulpit at her father’s famed New Bethel Baptist Church as a young girl singing in the great gospel tradition, the world has recognized her as a musical miracle.

Born Aretha Louise Franklin in Memphis,… Read more in Amazon's Aretha Franklin Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Franklin Gets It Right, May 27, 2003
By
This review is from: Get It Right (Audio CD)
Aretha's Usual Best -- She Gets It Right!

It's great fun to hear Aretha Franklin's post-Memphis offerings. Yes, this one's from 1983, and the people who weren't even born when this originally came out won't get it, being raised to listen to [...], but those like me who are old enough to remember Aretha on transistor radio and black-and-white TV will be happy with this, safe in the knowledge that Aretha's preaching every song as usual.

I don't have the luxury of being a typical Aretha Franklin fan and snob . Never would I propose to tell Ms. Franklin, the master, how to sing. No, I merely react to what my ears tell me. What they're telling me is that this disc is designed to groove to in a big way. It's made for the dance floor, would be the perfect music for any generation's senior prom, or for simply groovin' in the kitchen trying to get supper on, that is, if you're old enough to know how to cook without radio waves.

A personal note: The title song was written especially for her by fallen friend Luther Vandross, who also tried and failed to tell Ms. Franklin how to sing this song, and who does his own top-drawer version on his Virgin release, "I Know". I'm also fond of "Better Friends Than Lovers", a slow jam deluxe in pure ReeRee style. Gotta love the [...] bass in "Pretender", and what about those pseudo-rap vocals? Go on, girl!

I have to admire, too, how Aretha Franklin takes a remake and makes it all her own, something I wish more people had the creativity to do. Again, the kids won't care, but oldsters please listen to what she does with the Temps' "I Wish It Would Rain" and see that I'm right.

You can bet someone who is in the studio as little as Aretha Franklin can't but out anything less than top-drawer. Yes, the CD is relatively short, because, after all, it was recorded for the LP. But the fact that you don't get much value for the money on these older re-releases is not the fault of Ms. Franklin or the CD's arrangers and producers. If you usually like what you hear from Aretha Franklin, whether you're an original fan or a new one, don't be afraid to buy this CD thinking you'll get something less than quality. That will never happen. What little is there is the gold standard, and you can expect nothing less from Aretha Franklin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Areatha And Luther Part Deax, March 22, 2005
This review is from: Get It Right (Audio CD)
'Get It Right' is Aretha's second and unfortunately final album with Luther Vandross, which is a pitty because Luther did all that he could to make her album a priority rather then produce just more great singles. The title track sounds alot like
"Jump To It",as does"Every Girl (Wants A Guy,as does the whole
album really."Pretender" is one of the funkiest soul numbers Aretha threw down in the 80's and "I Wish It Would Rain"
is an uptempo cover that (however it shouldn't) actually tears the Tempt's classic to shreds."Giving In","When You Love Me Like That" and "Better Friends Then Lovers" are all classic Franklin ballads,as with all her 80's tunes featuring her vocals in a slightly smokier context then her classic period.
Nevertheless 'Get It Right' is (sadly) a very rare gem on CD that needs to be snapped up emmediately if ever seen cheaply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her greatest album of the 80's, March 7, 2005
This review is from: Get It Right (Audio CD)
Not so many lp's from the 80's stand the test of time like this album with its four bass driven wonders : «Get it right», «Pretender», «When you love me like that» and «I wish it would rain».
