5.0 out of 5 stars Franklin Gets It Right
Aretha's Usual Best -- She Gets It Right!

It's great fun to hear Aretha Franklin's post-Memphis offerings. 1.0 out of 5 stars (1.5 stars) I guess disco wasn't for her after all
Well, see, that's the problem: she doesn't get anything right in this crappy disco collection. I'm glad she didn't write the material. It's disco, and it's not even good disco: the uptempo dance tracks are pretty much the same waste of a backing track recycled - four-on-the-floor beats, awkward slap bass, swooping disco strings - if you can imagine Aretha singing "I Will...

Aretha's Usual Best -- She Gets It Right!

It's great fun to hear Aretha Franklin's post-Memphis offerings. Yes, this one's from 1983, and the people who weren't even born when this originally came out won't get it, being raised to listen to [...], but those like me who are old enough to remember Aretha on transistor radio and black-and-white TV will be happy with this, safe in the knowledge that Aretha's preaching every song as usual.

I don't have the luxury of being a typical Aretha Franklin fan and snob . Never would I propose to tell Ms. Franklin, the master, how to sing. No, I merely react to what my ears tell me. What they're telling me is that this disc is designed to groove to in a big way. It's made for the dance floor, would be the perfect music for any generation's senior prom, or for simply groovin' in the kitchen trying to get supper on, that is, if you're old enough to know how to cook without radio waves.

A personal note: The title song was written especially for her by fallen friend Luther Vandross, who also tried and failed to tell Ms. Franklin how to sing this song, and who does his own top-drawer version on his Virgin release, "I Know". I'm also fond of "Better Friends Than Lovers", a slow jam deluxe in pure ReeRee style. Gotta love the [...] bass in "Pretender", and what about those pseudo-rap vocals? Go on, girl!

I have to admire, too, how Aretha Franklin takes a remake and makes it all her own, something I wish more people had the creativity to do. Again, the kids won't care, but oldsters please listen to what she does with the Temps' "I Wish It Would Rain" and see that I'm right.

You can bet someone who is in the studio as little as Aretha Franklin can't but out anything less than top-drawer. Yes, the CD is relatively short, because, after all, it was recorded for the LP. But the fact that you don't get much value for the money on these older re-releases is not the fault of Ms. Franklin or the CD's arrangers and producers. If you usually like what you hear from Aretha Franklin, whether you're an original fan or a new one, don't be afraid to buy this CD thinking you'll get something less than quality. That will never happen. What little is there is the gold standard, and you can expect nothing less from Aretha Franklin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Areatha And Luther Part Deax, March 22, 2005
This review is from: Get It Right (Audio CD)
'Get It Right' is Aretha's second and unfortunately final album with Luther Vandross, which is a pitty because Luther did all that he could to make her album a priority rather then produce just more great singles. The title track sounds alot like
"Jump To It",as does"Every Girl (Wants A Guy,as does the whole
album really."Pretender" is one of the funkiest soul numbers Aretha threw down in the 80's and "I Wish It Would Rain"
is an uptempo cover that (however it shouldn't) actually tears the Tempt's classic to shreds."Giving In","When You Love Me Like That" and "Better Friends Then Lovers" are all classic Franklin ballads,as with all her 80's tunes featuring her vocals in a slightly smokier context then her classic period.
Nevertheless 'Get It Right' is (sadly) a very rare gem on CD that needs to be snapped up emmediately if ever seen cheaply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her greatest album of the 80's, March 7, 2005
This review is from: Get It Right (Audio CD)
Not so many lp's from the 80's stand the test of time like this album with its four bass driven wonders : «Get it right», «Pretender», «When you love me like that» and «I wish it would rain».

5.0 out of 5 stars Aretha, The Queen Of Soul, May 14, 2002

As the title says, there's no other like Aretha. After the succsesfull '60's and '70's soul years, she started at the early '80s focussed on a sound mixed with Funk and Soul. With upcoming artists like Luther Vandross, Fonzi Thornton, Marcus Miller (contributed on this album) this is one of the samples. Just like the former album "Jump To It", sophisticated with style. Excellent uptempo songs and slow jams.

Just perfect,

Definitly one of the greatest albums of the 80's. Aretha, the Queen Of Soul. This album is made of uptempo songs, with ballads, which for me is one of the best ever made. Nowadays I cannot find another artist who can compete with this Soulfull sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is great. Aretha at her best!, August 11, 1999

I love this CD. From the dance numbers "Get It Right," "Every Girl (Wants My Guy)," "When You Love Me Like That," and "I Got Your Love," to the soulful ballads of "I Wish It Would Rain," "Better Friends Than Lovers," and "Giving In," it's great musical fun for all. I personally think it's much better than it's predecessor "Jump To It."

5.0 out of 5 stars Aretha & Luther- They Got It Right!, August 15, 2006

The Late Luther Vandross was back for a second run at producing Miss Aretha, and he didn't dissapoint! Luther made Aretha sing on this one! 'Get It Right' is one of Aretha's better lp's, the production is slick and is pure Luther with those fantastic background vocals & arrangements.. The only miss here is her cover of the Temptations\Gladys Knight & The Pips hit 'I Wish It Would Rain' I didn't care for this arrangement. "Every Girl" contains some of Aretha's best riffing, 'When you love me like that' is Aretha at her soulful smooth best! love this song! It was a shame that Luther never got the chance to produce another full record again, they only did one more song together 'Doctor's Orders' in 1991, I also recommend getting her 'Jump To It' cd, to hear Luther's first production on Re.

5.0 out of 5 stars 80s R&B At Its Best, May 11, 2005

"Get It Right" was the second instalment of the Luther Vandross produced albums, and it perfectly compliments "Jump to It".

With Vandross back at the controls, Marcus Miller back on the bass and our Queen still in top form vocally, we have a set that's a touch more sophisticated than the first album. The title track and "Pretender" is 80s R&B at its best.

There is one track, however, that has to rank as one of the greatest Aretha tracks of all time - "I WISH IT WOULD RAIN". It's a funky ballad that has Aretha hitting notes that are way off the Richter scale! The calibre of the vocals (including the backing) is very high, and it's worth getting this CD for this alone.

It's unfortunate that two of Aretha's finest 80s albums aren't as well known as, say, the "Who's Zooming Who" album, but that's showbiz for you. "Get It Right" comes highly recommended, however.

4.0 out of 5 stars A near-perfect continuation of "Jump To It"., July 4, 2003

This was Aretha's second Luther Vandross-produced album and was almost as good as its predecessor. The only miss was "Better Friends Than Lovers" but all the other songs are among Aretha's best 1980s recordings. Luther was truly one of her best producers and it's too bad he only produced two albums for her.

Definitly one of the greatest of the Universe, the Queen of Soul. Her voice on "Get It Right" is marvelous. Although she made a lot of great hits, this 80's sound made a major impact on me. In my opninion, yet today there's no other female artist who can compete with her.
