For Love of Money,
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Some Love (Paperback)
Nina Foxx's sophomore novel, GET SOME LOVE, tells the story of southern girl Angelica Chapee. Shattered and caught off guard by the death of her beloved grandfather, Angelica is even more surprised to find out what he stipulated in his will. It appears Angelica's grandfather has left her quite a bit of money; however, she will have to meet his unconventional conditions before she can reap the benefits. Meanwhile, the Bronx native Juan Delgado is in town for a huge contract with a gospel convention for his family business, Delgado Cleaners. Juan is reluctant to take over the family business; he'd rather be a saxophonist. His best friend James, who accompanied him to Baton Rouge for the convention, seems a more likely candidate to run the dry cleaning plants after Juan's father retires. Juan and Angelica meet by happenstance. GET SOME LOVE is a novel of self-love and common sense. Intertwined with the circumstances that Angelica and Juan are dealing with is an intense and suspenseful sub-plot. The main characters were lucid and approachable in a way a good friend might be. I felt myself wanting to give them both advice on how to handle their situations. I enjoyed GET SOME LOVE, and think Nina Foxx has given her readership an entertaining and eye-opening book. Surprised!,
By R.E.A.L. Reviewers (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Some Love (Paperback)
In Get Some Love, Foxx starts right off grabbing my attention by tugging on my heartstrings. Angelica is racing home, after she learns of his unexpected death. She is not yet 21 years old, was basically raised by her grandfather, Ben Chappee III, she lovingly calls "Pop-pop." Angelica soon finds there's quite a bit she didn't know about her grandfather; one being he was a millionaire. The next main character and subplot deal with Juan Delgado, a "good Hispanic boy." Juan is in love with music and desires to do anything except what his father expects of him . . . To take over the family dry-cleaning business. Being the good boy that he is, he tries his best to please is father, while trying to find a way to break the news to him. Juan has a cousin named James who loves the family business. James also feels as if Pops, (Big Delgado) Juan's father is his own and would want nothing more than to run the business. Juan knows this and wish that could be the easy answer, but it's not. Therefore, James spends his time working hard in at the dry cleaner (against his mother's wishes) and trying to keep Juan focused on the business at hand. They have a big job to do in Baton Rouge and neither want to let Pops down. Now we have two main characters, both with a conflict of interests (Angelica is unsure about what to do with Pop-Pop's business . . . she dreams of "Dance") . . . will their paths cross? I'm thinking . . . You BET! Angelica's path also crosses with others as well. Money has a way of attracting people, and NOT necessarily people with her best interest in mind. Someone just may be willing to kill to get their hands on Angelica's money. Surprised? I was. Get Some Love was an interesting and easy read. I would definitely recommend this book. It's not your typical romance. Felicia

Good Read,
By Michelle D. Mcgriff "Author" (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Some Love (Paperback)
I read the book on my way home from a literary retreat. I had relaxed all weekend and shared good times with other readers, and so having this mild story to top off the weekend was a treat. The story flowed well. It was not filled with 'big time' drama. It was a nice 'cute' story, a book I could hand over to my daughter sitting next to me on the plane, and not feel the need to flip pages for her (smile). Having met Ms. Fox during the retreat, I was tickled that she is as shy as she is, and it comes through in her writing, however, I do think her book Marrying Up shows growth (she did a reading)it was sold out before I could buy my copy, so I'll be ordering one soon.

GET REAL!!!,
By Reading the Game "Ra'" (Chicago,IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Some Love (Paperback)
This book was cute...and that's it. The book has 2 main characters, Angelica and Juan who don't even meet until the very end! The author spends a lot of time on each character individually which makes you think that Juan is the answer to Angelica's prayers...but he turns out to be just another man. Yes she likes him but there is really nothing special that happens between them that made me like the book. Sure this book is funny at times, but it's pretty predictable. You know that her grandfather doesn't REALLY want her to lose her virginity so you know that there is a lesson to be learned. The end of the book leaves you hanging...Yea she tied all the characters together in the end but I wanted to know more. Let somone tell you about the book and read something else. It's a cute story but GET REAL!!

A must summer read for teenagers and young adults,
By Janet Saxon "Janet Saxon" (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Some Love (Paperback)
GET SOME LOVE was a very tasteful and refreshing book to read about a young girl struggling with the values and morals of her upbringing to obtain some money from her deceased grandfather.Angelica Chappee's grandfather raised her as a child. She adored him and loved his witty sense of humor. The grandfather challenged Anegelica to do something that he had taught her as being morally wrong and against her belief as a Christian. Angelica endured some hard times emotionally and physically trying to fullfill her grandfather's request, and deciding for herself what was right or wrong. I liked the way author dealt with the issue of sex without using bad language and distasteful sexual scenes in the book. This is a book that I would feel comfortable allowing my teenage daughter or son to read.

Get Some Lovin'!,
By
This review is from: Get Some Love (Paperback)
When Ben Chapee dies suddenly, his granddaughter Angelica travels to Baton Rouge Louisiana to say good bye to the last of her family. With her parents dead since she was five and her grandmother gone for a year, "Pop-Pop" was the only family Angelica had left in life. Unsure of what to do, Angelica arrives in time for the funeral- and the reading of the will.
Angelica is shocked to realize she has inherited the family business: three well to do funeral homes. Funeral homes had been in the family for years. After all, Pop-Pop always said "Everyone's got to die." As well, she has been left all of her grandfather's assets amounting to two point three million dollars. It is all hers, enough to pay her way in to Julliard so that she can realize her dream of becoming a singer - on one condition: that she lose her virginity within six days. Enter Juan Delgado, next in line to inherit his father's dry cleaning business. Only, his heart isn't in it. Longing to play his saxophone instead of smelling cleaning solvents, out of duty to his father as the oldest son Juan and his friend James are shipped out to Baton Rouge to redeem an ailing outlet of his father's. It has seen better days, but James and Juan must turn the business around in a week's time. It seems an impossible task to take on. Angelica and Juan don't know what lies in store for them, or how impossible things might become. With a supporting cast of characters that are as well defined as the leads, "Get Some Love" is part love story, part coming of age, part thriller, part mystery that is a gumbo of emotion and hilarity. What is most beautiful about Foxx's writing is that she keeps it real, life like. There is no excess of words or hubris here, only wonderfully true to life dialogue, laugh out loud humor and crisp, clear writing. The most shocking thing about "Get Some Love" is that it isn't what you think it's going to be when you start reading. There is a depth, a darkness, to it that is not apparent when you begin reading, but as you delve deeper you realize that this is more than a comedy of errors. It is life living on the page, deep and stirring. The novel catches you off guard, knowing that you've already judged it to be one thing when it is in truth another. There is something and someone within the pages of "Get Some Love" for everyone, whether it is romance, thriller or romantic comedy. What is perhaps most stirring is the silence when you finish it and realize that you're done the book. I found myself wanting to continue reading, to live with these characters for a little bit longer. A comedy of errors that emphasizes the importance of love, acceptance and family.
