This book was very practical and certainly kept my attention,

This review is from: Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet (Paperback)
I felt that this was an excellently written and was easy to read. I had read "Sugar Blues" immediately before this and "Get the Sugar Out" was most definitely a far superb book. It seemed to stick to the subject and appeared to stay more with facts. "Sugar Blues" seemed to be more opinionated and outdated. All in all "Get the Sugar Out" was very helpful and useful to me. After reading it I can certainly never look at sugar the same or eat it without feeling guilty. The book brings up points about sugar that I have never thought of before. I have began to eliminate sugar from my diet and I am amazed at where sugar is hidden in every day food that I never dreamed would have sugar. I have already began to notice a tremendous difference in my energy level and have lost a couple of pounds. I would highly recommend reading this book to anyone who is interested in bettering their physical and mental well being.

Written before low-carb craze, and still perhaps the best,

This review is from: Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet (Paperback)
Before the rafts of low-carb diet and cookbooks hit the shelves, Ann Louise Gittleman understood the threat sugar might pose to health. She does not tar all carbs with a single stroke, but breaks things down according to the glycemic index and to the source of the sugar. This information has been invaluable to me as I work to stop a slide into middle-age type II diabetes.
Rather than imbed data points in lengthy expository text, the information is presented in easy-to-take bullets organized by types of food (breakfast, entrees, soups, salads and more, including desserts). Thus, it is possible to glean useful information quickly, without having to "digest" chapters at a time. A helpful chapter on eating out suggests how to navigate menus, but frankly the emphasis of this book is that we have most control over what's in food when we prepare it, ourselves. Other strengths of this book include its extensive bibliography and an index. In particular, the latter is lacking from many recently published non-fiction books. Its inclusion here only increases how easy the book is to use. Finally, the distinctly non-faddish tone of the book appeals to me as a reader who is more persuaded by science than by anecdote. Gittleman nails this and has written a book that will be worth having long after the low-carb craze has passed into the cultural sunset. I happily use Amazon's opportunity to re-sell books when I finish them. Rarely does a book earn more than temporary space on my shelves. This book, for me, is a keeper. Get your own copy *grin*

Finally, some practical tips!,

One of my biggest complaints about change-your-diet books is that they spend a lot of time convincing you why you should/shouldn't eat <fill in the product here>. This book isn't like that! She gives a brief overview of why cutting sugar out is a good idea, then gives sensible, helpful tips on how to go about actually doing it. I'm hypoglycemic and was recently told to follow a sugar-free diet, and this book has been a my roadmap. Everyone interested in their health should read this book!

Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar in Any D,

I found this book to be the best I've read so far in regards to a sugar free diet. I had been on a no sugar diet for awhile and thought I knew everything. Boy was I surprised! Who knew there is sugar in table salt! I ended up (gladly) throwing away half of the food in my kitchen. Get the Sugar out is extremely informative even if you don't want to cut your sugar to that extreme. It's very easy to read and understand. It is chock full of great tips and recipes which are also very simple to follow and tasty too! Anne Gittleman also does a great job of offering brand names so you know what to look for when your shopping. I use this book constantly as a reference...it was the best ten bucks I ever spent!

Not a diet, a lifestyle change!,

This review is from: Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet (Paperback)
Gittleman's book proves effective because it focuses on cutting refined sugar out of the diet. Refined sugar has been stripped (over 90 percent) of its natural ingredient and is a man-made, processed chemical that can lead the body to many illnesses. The body has zero use for refined sugar. This book does not read like a story. It can be opened up at random and offers useful pointers. The book literally has 501 pointers and they are numbered for easy reading. It also includes many recipes. What is most important about Gittleman's book is her insistence to not substitute refined sugar with aspartame or saccharin. (Please before you use these sugar substitutes, educate yourself about them). I am also impressed that she suggests the use of Stevia (which the FDA won't approve, because, God-forbid, it is good for us). Sugar is everywhere, in everything. Learn how to recognize this with this wonderful book. You will not be deprived with Gittleman's delicious suggestions and you will do yourself and your body a huge favor.

Finally, the real truth about carbohydrates!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet (Paperback)
This book is a must! Diabetics who are adhereing to high carb diets, thinking they are doing the right thing need to see this information! People who are so involved with trying to cut all fat from their diets only to add in more sugars need to see this! Ann tells the whole truth about simple sugars in our diets. The things we were taught by the nutritionists to believe were complex carbs--like bread, pasta, etc. have been corrupted by the use of enriched flours instead of whole wheat. The consumer need to know the truth--and needs to start reading labels and start shopping for the good stuff. Real food--not the boxed stuff.I find this book an essential to those who believe that the sugar substitutes are a great salvation. She gives the real scoop on those as well. Others who would not believe(the diet soda addicts) must see this information for themselves!

I am a self proclaimed sugar addict, which I just discovered while reading this book. Now, after reading the book, I have to make a change in my lifestyle and stop eating SUGAR! I had no idea sugar was in so many things nor did I know that sugar was so bad for you. This book had lots of helpful tips (501 to be exact) and backed them up with recipes and real life ways to help you change your sugar habit ways. She was honest and real and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get real about sugar in their diets!

Every American should read this!,

Easy to read, good reference and very enligtening. Ms. Gittleman gets the point across that fat is not making American's fat---sugar is! The fat-free, fat-reduced food industry has us fooled! I've been reducing sugar and have already lost weight and I have more energy at night after working all day then I have ever have! I hope I can convince my friends and family that need to get healthier to read this simplistic, yet very informative book!

This review is from: Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet (Paperback)
After following the advice in GET THE SUGAR OUT, i MANAGED TO LOSE TEN POUNDS IN TWO WEEKS...all of those nasty carbs created water retention, allergic responses and food cravings...just like the book says. I think every mother should buy this book to learn how to feed her kids and her family correctly. The problem, as the author points out, is that sugar is in everything...it's time to GET THE SUGAR OUT...and feel better all over, might I add. I did, and I do!!!!!!!
