Works on Multiple Levels,
By Emanuel Carpenter... Author/Reviewer (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get on TV!: The Insider's Guide to Pitching the Producers and Promoting Yourself (Paperback)
OK. I admit it. When I agreed to review "Get on TV" by Jacquie Jordan it was for my own selfish reasons. My new novel had just been released, and I was looking for a way to get on TV for added exposure. So naturally, I chose the book with the perfect title, and man am I glad I did.
In "Get on TV" veteran TV producer and insider Jacquie Jordan (who has worked with folks like Donny Osmond and Maury Povich) reveals valuable information on what it takes to get on television. The books gives detailed information on topics such as how to assemble a press kit, how to speak the language of TV producers and how to set realistic expectations on appearing on your favorite (and not so favorite) news and talk shows. "Get on TV" works on multiple levels, mainly because the reader can feel the author's genuine authenticity when reading between the lines. It's not one of those books that was written solely to promote the author's business. In fact, Jordan even shares ways to circumvent the need to hire an agency like hers. You gotta love and respect that. Though the book is packed with outstanding information, including a sample release form, contact information for all of the major networks and Jordan's insider info, some of the material (like definitions and learning the lingo) seemed to be overkill. But don't let this minor distraction fool you. Jacquie Jordan knows her stuff, and if you follow the advice in this book it wouldn't surprise me at all if I saw you on TV soon after. Buy this book and follow the advice given and I know I'll see you on the small screen. Emanuel Carpenter Author of "Where is the Love?" emanuelcarpenter dot com

Jordan Demystifies the Process of Getting on TV,
By
This review is from: Get on TV!: The Insider's Guide to Pitching the Producers and Promoting Yourself (Paperback)
Jacquie Jordan is that rare guru who is both a PR insider and a TV insider. This book is short on theory and long on the exact and precise steps you need to take to get on TV, and, more important, get invited back repeatedly. Jordan demystifies the process for beginning TV experts by showing them how to succeed without mortgaging their homes for high-powered publicists. And yet "Get on TV" also contains enough advanced tips and insider nuance to make the most grizzled media mavens feel like they've learned something new. "Get on TV" is an important part of my media and PR library.

This is a great book especially for those folks that know nothing about the TV/entertainment industry. Ms. Jordan does an excellent job of detailing the different job descriptions and provides invaluable insider information that one outside the industry would never have access to.

Jacquie Jordan has written this book for a person who may want to take their area of expertise and get television exposure. But she helps develop an edge or a "Hook" to stand above all the other experts. Television being only a jump start to further avenues when the TV exposure settles down. The real gem for me was Jacquie's capacity to share her personal experiences and struggles as a producer. She mingles this with a very, very thorough knowledge of the process. Working in TV and Film for a few years now, I can tell you she has pegged the process very accurately. All due respect to other books on production, GET ON TV has an aliveness combined with good instructions. I recommend this book to professors, students, and people seeking employment in TV and Film. Jacquie reveals the fundamentals of production (the producer's role) here and for me they can apply to film production as well. The idea that once you understand what the producer wants the more likely your project will be born. Again although geared toward potential TV Guest-experts, Jacquie in her unwitting genius gave me more. I wish I had the knowledge in this book a few years a ago, because it would have cut the pain of "Hollywood" in half. I have also had the opportunity to hear her speak and "she made me sit up in my chair."

Publicity made easy from A-Z,
This review is from: Get on TV!: The Insider's Guide to Pitching the Producers and Promoting Yourself (Paperback)
I have worked in media for over 25 years and Jacquie even taught me things! She takes you from wanting to promote your idea to becoming a "guestpert" that television producers want to call back...over and over again. She gives you the lay of the land and who all the players are in the field...easily and simply. It's a great resource for those who want to be in the "biz" or need the "biz" to promote their product or services.

I'm not sure where I first ran across this. I think it was an Amazon recommendation when I was browsing books on publicity.
Like many who are experts in their field, I have occasionally thought about offering myself to the TV talk shows. Question is, of course, how do I do that? This relatively short (205 pages), somewhat old (2006), breezily written book seems to do it in detail and well. Jacquie Jordan claims to be a television producer of many years standing and I have no reason to doubt her. The book also serves as a platform for marketing her own TV expert, "tvguestperts" as she calls them, website and services. I was really surprised by how hard core Jordan's information is. There is very little hyperbole here and Jordan's writing style is very direct and not at all ponderous. She lays out the steps in 1 - 2 - 3 fashion in complete detail. Jordan covers every aspect of the process: identifying the decision makers, putting together your platform, press kit and show reel, how to pitch, a glossary of television terms. what to do if you're cancelled or bumped and how to act when you finally make it on air. It all has the feel of "been there, done that" advice: solid stuff. There is also a chapter on getting on reality TV shows. Overall, this is one of those gems: a "how-to" book that provides solid advice from a pro in the field. If you've ever thought you have something to offer on TV as an expert, this book is a solid guide to making it happen. Jerry

I loved Get on TV! It's entertaining, yet practical, detailed and has so much heart. Even though I've been on Oprah and Good Morning America and have years of experience, I still learned a lot. Jacquie Jordan gives us a tremendous gift: not only insider knowledge we can get nowhere else, but also the experience of having a personal relationship with a top-notch TV producer. Go for it!
