Book Description

May 6, 1997
Getting it together by 30 doesn't mean being rich by 30. It means being on a career trajectory that will bring a lifetime of success and satisfaction -- or riches and fame, if that's what you want. And planning is the key.

Get it Together by 30 helps readers plan wisely -- and early. It explains everything they need to choose and start a career, beginning with making the transition from college to a job market that's tougher than ever. Packed with real-life experiences and humorous anecdotes, this practical guide supplies invaluable information on topics such as:

- getting internships - networking - resumes and cover letters mental preparation building a career electronically temping - interviewing - handling an offer - the art of self-promotion - and behaving on the job.

"A lot of people start their careers off incorrectly, and never have a chance to make it at all, let alone by 30", caution authors Thau and Heflin. "They don't take advantage of obvious opportunities, they neglect the small details that impress others, and they lack the necessary confidence to get ahead. So when 30 rolls around, they're nowhere near where they should be".

For career-minded individuals with the foresight to plan early, Get it Together by 30 can help them get on the right path -- and follow it all the way to the bank!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Get It Together By 30: And Be Set for the Rest of Your Life, by Richard D. Thau and Jay S. Heflin, is a knowing guide to the rocky road stretching from college classroom to corporate boardroom by two guys who recently have traveled it. Packed with specific tips illustrated with humorous examples, it wisely details a sound route to long-term personal and professional success rather than any questionable shortcuts to riches at a young age.

From Library Journal

First-time authors Thau and Heflin have attempted to provide an employment guide for the under-30 crowd. They cover the gamut, including college degrees, career selection, networking, interviewing, resume writing, employment outlook, computers in the workplace, office rules, and avoiding burnout. Unfortunately, the writing style is desultory and sophomoric, and the material is covered in a highly cursory and superficial manner. For example, four pages each are devoted to "the link between education and employment" and "finding an internship." Obviously attempting to relate to readers under the age of 30, the authors amplify the labored writing with a salting of unfunny and often crude cartoons. Not appropriate for the business shelves of libraries.?Alan J. Farber, Northern Illinois Univ. DeKalb

4.0 out of 5 stars It made me evaluate what I really wanted from a job., December 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Get It Together by 30: And Be Set for the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
At first I picked up this book in order to find the secret to success- the one substantive key to finding a successful job. But as I read it, I realized that no one book can provide the personal insight that I needed. This book, however, was great because it made me ask myself all the right questions. It made me think about what I really wanted in a job, what kinds of things I like to do and what I thought I was good at. The stories and cute comics helped me look at these questions and really think about them in a way that I never had before. If you really don't know how to get off your butt, it's a great start.

1.0 out of 5 stars Authors should have done more research, August 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Get It Together by 30: And Be Set for the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
I don't remember the last time I made a return to a book store, but for this book I made an exception. Buyers will be disappointed by the lack of useful information and reams of unhelpful advice. Most of Thau and Heflin's work is shaped from their own limited experience, and it was obvious right away that their research was poor and sporadic. Beside some humorous illustrations, I can think of few redeeming qualities of this work. Besides having a book published under their names, I would worry that these authors don't yet "have it together". If you're interested in this type of book, check out "JobSmarts for Twentysomethings" or "JobSmarts Top 50 Careers" by the creative Bradley G. Richardson. Both are much more helpful for the job search, and I found that the notable parts of "Get it Together..." were taken straight from Richardsons' work.
