5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive!
Great indie release from a indie band. I saw very little of them from VH1's Bands on the Run, but I didn't care too much for the remaining (and untimately winning) bands.

I get the impression that Josh Dodes could have gotten some lessons from Billy Joel or Elton John. There's good qualities of good music in here. Funk, blues, and insightful lyrics.

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK CD from an OK band
Like most people, my first exposure to Josh Dodes Band was through VH1's Bands on the Run. And while many of my fellow reviewers seem disappointed with the outcome of the show, I for one am pleased.

But let's put that all aside -- this is about music, not reality television. I like the catchy riffs and poppy vocals that JDB has to offer. However, I have found that if...

Don't let the lack of lead guitars fool you -- some of the greatest rock artists were led by pianists -- Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Joel, Elton John and many others...

Hope to see more from Josh Dodes in the future...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cd, July 21, 2001

Very cool CD. If you're looking for something different and especially if you're a fan of funk and keyboards. Great harmonies on the singing as well. Forget the silly TV show and check out a very original band and sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars King of Goth-metal loves funk-rock geniuses: JDB Rules!!, June 15, 2001
This review is from: Get Up (Audio CD)
Hey, I am the King of Goth-metal. I live in Chicago, and I love Bands on the Run!! At first, I thought Harlow was the best. (Hey, who can't beat Soulcracker's annoying power-pop of Flickerstick's Everclear stylings?) Then, my friend gave me a CD of "Get Up." ( I used to love funk.) I put it on, and I loved it! I've seen 3 of their shows. Every time they bring the house DOWN!! They rock! They should never have been kicked off of "BOTR" 'cause they're awesome! Great musicianship. The first time I saw them on VH1, they seemed kinda geeky. Then I heard the CD. Here's a quick review of each song:

1. American Angel: Cool lyrics, great keyboarding and vocals. 2. Judith Dancing: More rhythm section interplay, Awesome bass, piano, and drums. 3. Be My Friend, But Be Naked: Popping Organ, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Just great. 4. Looking Back At You: Josh's best singing on the album. And like the Black Crowes, their ballads [are always good]. 5. Rhinorocerous: One of the catchiest songs on the CD. Interplay between all the band members. Cohesive, yet rockin'. 6. The On & On: Definitely a great song to dance to. Really great singing. 7. Do the Do: Great on CD. Really great hooks, great sound. Always a highlight live. 8. Windows: Josh's solo ballad. Creative piano and vocals, really sad lyrics about homelessness. 9. The Cradle: The CD's best tune, without a doubt. So catchy, danceable, great bass, drums, vocals. The highlight of "Get Up" is in the middle of this song, with this awesome funk keyboard playing that sounds like a guitar. An instant classic. 10. White-Collar Cowboys: Great drumming. Another gem with great vocals and cool bass. 11. Fat Jack's Blues: Bluesy hooks, Cool keyboard playing (as usual), plus some unique harmony.

Also awesome are some songs that aren't on "Get Up," but they rock when they're played live: "Freak," "Justine," "Parker Street," and "Wasted by the Door." There might be a few I'm probably forgetting. Go see them live and buy "Get Up" 'cause it rocks!...

5.0 out of 5 stars Imagine Dave Matthews played a blues piano..., December 9, 2000
This review is from: Get Up (Audio CD)
With this unique blend of blues, pop, and rock, The Josh Dodes Band packs an infectious energy. You will find yourself humming the catchy songs like "Be my Friend, But Be Naked" and "Rhinorocerous." You'll be jumping around the house or dancing in your car to "The On & On" and "White collar Cowboy." And you'll recognize the true talent in Josh's voice and fingers with the slower tracks like "Looking Back at You."

This review is from: Get Up (Audio CD)
I didn't hear about the Josh Dodes Band until I saw them on VH1's "Band on the Run". They really stood out as a TRULY TALENTED group-- they're a mixture of a funk/soul/blues/rock backed up by the talented Josh Dodes' keyboard skills and incredible voice. With songs like "Be My Friend, But be Naked", "Rhinoceros", "The On & On" and "White Collar Cowboy", it is no wonder that they already have a rabid following in NYC. I'm just disappointed that my favorite song of theirs, "Wasted By The Door", isn't on this CD. Hopefully I'll get the chance to see them live, but for now, this album is more than enough to tide me over...

Highly Recommended!!

This review is from: Get Up (Audio CD)
Like most people, my first exposure to Josh Dodes Band was through VH1's Bands on the Run. And while many of my fellow reviewers seem disappointed with the outcome of the show, I for one am pleased.

But let's put that all aside -- this is about music, not reality television. I like the catchy riffs and poppy vocals that JDB has to offer. However, I have found that if you listen long enough, one song blends into the next until it all seems like one big, mushy song. They could use a little variety in my humble opinion.

I give them three stars -- an average rating for an average band.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting collage of sound, May 28, 2001

This review is from: Get Up (Audio CD)
The title to this album truly defines what you are about to hear, a CD full of great "up" music. The majority of songs on the album are the type that make you want to tap your foot and sing along. It's absolutely perfect when you want to clean up your house and want some great background music to help you through it. On another level, it's also great to listen to when you just feel like listening to music. Funky bass lines and soulful backup singers are a big part of this CD. you should note that this is not the same band that you might have seen on "Bands on the Run," Josh Dodes and Maiya Sykes are the only two you'll recognize from the show. If you are hesitant to buy this album I urge you to go ahead and buy it, it will really grow on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Support an up-and-coming talent and buy this album!, July 16, 2001

I've dug Josh Dode's blend of funky, jazzy, piano driven rock ever since I sold him a computer years ago (it's VERY cool to see a fellow Temp slowly realize his potential!). While I truly enjoy his band's music, fans of Billy Joel will TRULY adore this album (which is not to say J.D. rips anyone off). If you don't end up buying this album PLEASE check them out if they play around you - their shows are cheap and all the members put their hearts into their work.

You guys deserved to win Bands on the Run. You have a very original sound unlike the unoriginal [stuff] being shoveled out by Flickerstick and Soulcracker.I can't stand useless garbage they were playing. I hope you guys succeed despite that show. I think it was good exposure anyways. By the way this cd rocks and everyone should buy it. May Flickerstick and Souldcracker burn in there own unoriginal useless music scene that will be forgotten in a few years.
