5.0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Book!
Another fun-to-read title in the Get Wise! series, this book teaches you what you need to know to write fabolous essays. As always, Chi is there to perk things up and make them interesting. The book starts off with a chapter about choosing right words and how to make sentences come alive with vocabulary. Then, moving on, the book teaches about sentences and how to make...

1.0 out of 5 stars For high school students? More like third graders!
I have taught writing for a number of years at levels from junior high through college. I bought this book thinking it would help some of my current students who needed a "basic" text. Especially some of my more reluctant readers. Mistake! This book, with its too-cutesy-for-words character, Chi, is so banal as to be useless. The examples of good writing are...

4.0 out of 5 stars English, February 19, 2008
This review is from: Get Wise! Mastering Writing Skills (Paperback)
I purchased this book so that I could sit with my 15 yr old son who's having a hard time when it comes to writing. This book, I think, has an approach to capture the teenager, making it more interesting with the "smart-aleck" comments that refer to english. I'd recommend this book as I think it's a great tool. As I'm working with my son I find it helping me brush up also.

Another fun-to-read title in the Get Wise! series, this book teaches you what you need to know to write fabolous essays. As always, Chi is there to perk things up and make them interesting. The book starts off with a chapter about choosing right words and how to make sentences come alive with vocabulary. Then, moving on, the book teaches about sentences and how to make them interesting and amazing. After that, you will learn all the basics of writing great paragraphs. Then you will learn about brainstorming, with great methods that really work. And after that comes the essay! The method for writing an essay in here is one that really works, too! After that chapter comes a chapter on editing and revising, and finally a chapter about timed essays. In conculsion, this was a wonderful book for teaching troubled students how to write fantastic essays. Wonderful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly original!, October 19, 2002

This review is from: Get Wise! Mastering Writing Skills (Paperback)
This book (Mastering Writing Skills), as well as the three other skill books in the Get Wise! series, is a richly imagined ride through the classroom that offers high school students an innovative and exciting way to learn. Students will thrill to the irreverent character Chi as she chides the authors with her razor-sharp wit while experiencing the lessons with the reader. Filled with fun and games, Get Wise: Mastering Writing Skills provides the highest quality lessons and easy-to-use formulas, which provide the keys to writing well-constructed and compelling prose. Kids may love the character's snide remarks but smart parents and teachers will be satisfied with intelligent methods that will ultimately maximize their child's potential.

I got this book for my daughter, who is in high school, and she loved it! She really liked the lead character, Chi, who is a teenage girl. It's a really fun and interactive way of learning how to write and I'm going to get her the other books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one!, October 19, 2002

I bought this book for my teenaged daughter, and she really READ it! It's light, it's funny, it's entertaining, and it really is quite educational. This concise little books not only gets into the mechanics of writing but also provides terrific advice for getting the juices flowing. I love the character, "chi." My daughter has now been keeping a journal as it has inspired her to start writing creatively. Couldn't be more thrilled. Listen, it beats Britney!

I have taught writing for a number of years at levels from junior high through college. I bought this book thinking it would help some of my current students who needed a "basic" text. Especially some of my more reluctant readers. Mistake! This book, with its too-cutesy-for-words character, Chi, is so banal as to be useless. The examples of good writing are terrible! Any high school student who copied one of the "sample" essays and turned it in would undoubtedly flunk. A terrible choice for students of any age.
