First US CD Compilation,

This review is from: Get Yer Boots On: The Best of Slade (Audio CD)
Hard to believe it took until 2004 for a U.S. Record Company to release a Slade compilation. So, here you get 16 gems (including all 6 of their UK #1 songs)covering the years 1971-83. The liner notes are good as they explain the origin of each song. If you're looking for good old fashioned hook-filled glam rock, then this is an essential addition to your collection.

Finally, an American release that gets the best of Slade. Cleaned up and gathered in one disc, this is glam rock when it still had no real pretense to art. Along with the likes of Gary Glitter, Status Quo, and Sweet, Slade was playing loud and loose, and never losing sight that one of the best parts of making rock was having fun with it.
Slade never took sides. They just wanted everyone to "Get Down and Get With It." Despite such nonsensical titles like "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" or "Gudbuy T'Jane," Slade was serious about having a good time. While they were never as huge in America as they were in the UK, these songs will still sound like hits to unfamiliar ears. The Quiet Riot driven resurrection of Slade even brought them a hit album and singles in the 80's (and finally, and American Top 40 rocker in "Run Runaway"). Slade understood the power of gritty but goofy fun. "Get Yer Boots On" drop a 16 chord salute to one of the best party bands of the seventies. Also, if you can catch a viewing of the recently issued "Slade In Flame" DVD, from which the song "How Does It Feel" is culled, give it a look. It's the antithesis of what The band's music represents, and one of the better rock movies.

Great No Frills Rock,

I had learned about Slade in the early '70's by reading Circus magazine as a kid but never heard them on the radio and couldn't find one of their records. Finally I saw Sladest, bought it and turned all my friends on to it. No big guitar solos, just great fun rock and roll filled with hooks that keep these songs swirling around your brain long after the stereo is turned off. I remember finally seeing them on one of those late night In Concert type of shows and thought they looked very bubblegum with the highest platform boots I had seen. I never liked Quiet Riot and their versions of Slade songs don't have the fun of the originals.

Essentially this collection is Greatest hits through 1975 plus the two American top 40 singles from 1983 slapped on the end. If you like Slade, then obviously this collection is very much incomplete but if you use this CD to get into Slade, then you will probably import some of their other Cd's anyway. The CD is only 60 minutes long so there were lots of missed opportunities to include other music released after 1975 or even include some choice album cuts from the early 1970's. Had I a chance to order this again, I would opt for importing one of the more complete greatest hits collections or gone after the box set. Too bad that Slade Cd's are so hard to find in the US. Those comments aside, the music on the CD is terrific.

The 70s Glam Gods,
This review is from: Get Yer Boots On: The Best of Slade (Audio CD)
Slade were they biggest thing in the UK in the 70s. They had a total of 17 Top 20 hits in the UK. This guys specialized in sing along chorus, stompin their hands, clappin their feet, catchy guitar and violin riffs, and misspelling song titles. All the songs on here are great especially "Cum On Feel The Noize" which would later bring Quiet Riot to the peak of their popularity. Fans of T. Rex, David Bowie, and The Sweet will dance with joy when listening to Get Yer Boots On.

A good compilation of (some of) Slade's singles. Slade were a great band based on the fundamental notions of energy, noise, excitement and fun, and it comes through in many of the tracks, particularly the mid-1970s material. Interestingly, the lyrics are able to sketch out a story with very few words (e.g. "G'buy T' Jane"), which beats a lot of rap today.
Only 4 stars because there's only an hour of music on the CD, so 20 minutes is left blank. There was certainly other excellent music that could have been included, not necessarily singles. Sometimes really good tracks are on the albums, yet still get airplay and should go on a compilation (Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down" being but one example). Perhaps it's cut back for the US market (alas). If you enjoy Rock 'n' Roll with energy and fun, you will probably like this CD a lot.

Mama We're All Hard of Hearing Now,
By Tony James "A J" (Canadarocks) - See all my reviews

This compilation covers most of the phonetically challenged group's work. Instead of covering what most of the other reviewers have already stated I'd like to mention the songs that I feel should have been included on this collection as well. From the album "Slades Greats" was a gem titled "Look Wot You Dun". One of their earliest albums was titled "Slade Alive". On it they covered Alvin Lee's "Hear me Calling", John Sebastian's "Darling be Home Soon" and that classic rock and roll anthem "Born to be Wild". Yes , the compilation is in its truer form without these songs but I feel that if all of a band's main offerings are available on the compillation then an occasional oddity, rarity or live recording enhances it. It would certainly satisfy the curious among us. Crank it up and enjoy.

I got to see Slade only once in concert. It was the Autumn of 1975 at the War Memorial in Syracuse, NY. I was 15 at the time and this was my first indoor Rock concert. Noddy Holder & the rest of the band almost brought the ceiling down that night! You could tell they were having one hell of a good time on stage that night! Two sets of stairs on either side of the stage where Noddy & lead guitarist Dave Hill did backward flips, while strobes went wild mixed with blue dots of light form the crystal ball. I`ll never forget him yelling "IS EVERYBODY FEELIN` ALLRIGHT?" They blew me away, and I never have forgotten Slade for hooking me on ROCK N Roll for life! I`m glad to own this CD- CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE!

Unlike many 'best of'albums, "Get Yer Boots On" is a true compilation of the bands best tracks. There's no rubbish included to make up the numbers on this album, it's all fantasstic Slade hits. It's fast moving and sure to get you dancing or moving to the beat.
