But what about the needs of the parents? They often go unacknowledged, unnoticed, and uncared for.
That is what makes "Get Your Joy Back: Banishing Resentment and Reclaiming Confidence in Your Special Needs Family" such a unique and valuable tool. It is written especially for YOU--the parent of a special needs child. It is about your struggles, needs, hurts, frustrations, and disappointments.
And very true to the title it is about getting rid of the extra baggage that comes with the very challenging assignment, that you face daily, to make room for more joy.
As the mom of four girls, two of them with mental and developmental special needs, Laurie has her finger on the pulse of special needs parents. Her experience as a certified life coach enhances her ability to tackle difficult subjects graciously. Her own experiences have allowed her an insider's view on many of the struggles that are common among special needs parents. Plus she networks with other parents dealing with similar issues. All combined, this has led her to a level of expertise on the subject.
I feel that she did a masterful job of validating many of the feelings that parents of special needs children typically deal with but are often hesitant to admit. And what I love is that she doesn't stop there. She gives solid advice for dealing with the feelings and moving forward to a healthier place.

Laurie Wallin touches the very heartstrings of this arduous journey of special needs parenting. Her book resonates with her own faith and faithfulness.
Once I got through the tears and said to myself, 'God clearly has something big in this book for you', I couldn't put it down! I read the entire book, highlighted, wrote in, and marked my book up! I showed it to my son's counselor and said, 'Your clients' parents NEED this book!'
Laurie uses her experience, not just as a life coach, but more as a special needs mom, to reach those of us who are in the trenches of weariness as we raise our beautiful, special children. Laurie has 4 children. 2 of her daughters were adopted from foster care and have mental health, behavioral challenges, and even some medical concerns.
Laurie connects with her readers on a personal level through her witty, but often raw words. She acknowledges and validates the emotions and thoughts that we have about ourselves, our families, professionals, and even our children - those emotions and thoughts that we deny and bury as deeply as possible. After the acknowledgement and validation, she gives us practical ways to address those emotions and thoughts, ways to deal with them, and how to keep those things from stealing our JOY.
Thank you for being honest, real, and loving through the words in this book!
This is also a great book for anyone who has a special kid in their extended family, within their close friendships, in their child's classroom or Sunday school. It will help them understand. This book has everything the special needs parent wanted them to know but couldn't, or didn't know how to, say.
