Editorial Reviews

Review

"An entertaining and practical handbook that should be mandatory reading for urban dwellers considering a move to the country." - Rustik Magazine

"A nice change from the standard how to, this book may be more of a how not to, but proves equally effective." - Indie Reader

"Kristy Athens' observations hold plenty of joys and warnings for urbanites wanting to chuck it all or for those bluesy for the bucolic." - Publisher's Weekly

About the Author

Kristy Athens and her husband Michael always had visions to get out of the city and get farming. And farm they did on the Washington side of the Columbia gorge. "Get Your Pitchfork On!" is both an amusing how-to from Kristy and hubby's hard-earned personal experiences.

Kristy Athens' nonfiction and short fiction have been published in a number of magazines, newspapers and literary journals, most recently High Desert Journal, Barely South Review and the anthology Mamas and Papas. In 2010, she was a writer-in-residence for the Eastern Oregon Writer-in-Residence program and Soapstone. Kristy has served on the boards of the Hood River County Cultural Trust, Independent Publishing Resource Center, and Northwest Writers. She has been a guest blogger for New Oregon Arts & Letters; editor of Columbia Gorge Magazine; and coordinator of the Columbia Center for the Arts Plein Air Writing Exhibition, and of Literary Arts’ Oregon Book Awards and Oregon Literary Fellowships programs.

This is Kristy's first book.

This is probably the best book I have seen on living in the country. You do not have to be off the grid in order to take advantage of what you can learn from these pages, although there is certainly information for that in here too.
Almost anything you need to know is included from; buying the land, maintenance of the land, tractors, tools, fencing and attire, buildings, information on utilities and other services, winter storm preparedness, sustainable power, alternative building materials, green ideas, almost everything you would need to know about wildlife and gardening, harvesting and storage, animals, communities, small town etiquette, people, communities and events, making a living, health care, vehicles and driving.

This is really a go to book with absolutely excellent advice for anyone who wants to live on the land whether way out in the country or in back yard suburbia.

My husband owes Kristy Athens a debt of gratitude for writing this book. I'm a born and raised suburban girl that's maintained a romantic notion of farm living for most my adult life. I've been (gently) strong-arming the husband towards buying property in the country and raising darling chickens, goats and pigs. He's been a sport and gone to look at properties with me, but it was never the right time or perfect place. After reading GYPO, I better understand the realities don't match what I've been imagining. Living in the country is a lot of work! I've got a comfortable suburban life, an easy commute to work, a short drive to multiple grocery stores, broadband internet access and all the pleasures city services provide. And I like that! Kristy Athens helped me understand the realities of my farm dream. I haven't given up on the idea, but I have a much better perspective for going forward. This book was an invaluable resource for me. Highly recommended as the first book to read for suburbanites dreaming of country living.

I had read the other reviews that almost made me not order; but then I went ahead anyway because I so love the topic of country living. My issue with this book is that it is so broad with bits of information on everything, but no real information on anything. For example it mentions how to save pineapple. Most rural places in the US will not support pineapple growth; why include it? A lot of things like that, information in the barest form, without context to their experience or how it would relate to most rural living situations. I also had hoped for more details of there own personal experience with the topics and felt that was missing. Overall I don't think it will stay in my book collection; not enough in it to need to refer back to, or enough of a story to make me want to re-read it.

If you are looking for the complete TRUTH about rural living, this book is the best. It is very well written, includes humor and all the info you need to make an informed decision. The author is candid and helps you sort out fact from fiction. Rural living isn't for everyone and for city dwellers who want to escape to the country for an "easier" life, this book is a must.

As someone who bought raw rural land and built a home off the grid, I admire the author's extremely detailed overview of the joys and pitfalls of this type of "adventure." The author has left nothing out! An excellent reference book
