Not for the squeemish., October 16, 2011
This review is from: Geta (Panther Bks.) (Paperback)
This is the same book as "Courtship Rite" (same author). Unlike me, you can save yourself money by not buying both.
If you are at all squeemish, then DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. This would probabbly include 80% of the male readers and 99% of the female readers. In a world where of the plant life and animal is mostly poisonous, it is not surprising that people would resort to cannibalism. At one point I asked myself, "Could human society be this brutal?" The answer to that question is YES. Look at the Aztecs. Or the Baal religion, where a man would sell his oldest daughter to Baal in exchange for a few shekels and a night with the priestess. Or this Inca religion, where young children were bought for ritualist murder. The more the child cried during the slaying, the more rain they would expect the next spring.
Like his other books, Kingsbury's "Courtship Rite" is finely crafted. "Interesting" does not begin to describe a the society of Geta where people with low "kolathi" (the Geta word for low esteem) quickly find themselves the victim of ritualistic murder, after which they become the content of the next feast. Some of the things in the book I find to be unspeakable.
This book was written in 1982. Kingsbury obviously spent years researching this book. In the end, it is not too surprising why it was not found on the New York Times bestseller's list, or any other reward list.
