About the Author

The women behind Joan Rylen are Johnell Kelley and Robbyn Foster, friends since kindergarten. They grew up in Pasa"Get Down"dena, Texas, a suburb southeast of Houston. Their annual girls trips with two other good friends were the inspiration for Getaway Girlz. Johnell and Robbyn have also written, Rocky Mountain Mayhem and Big Easy Escapade the next two books in the series, and are currently working on Upstate Uproar, set to be released in Fall, 2014. They can be seen around Fort Worth writing in bars and having an all-around good time. Johnell and Robbyn hope to inspire women, whether they're 21 or 81, to stay in touch with old friends and take getaways of their own. There's nothing like a good friend who knows all your stories-the ones so crazy you can't make them up, and loves you anyway.

So the reviews are few, and I can't understand why those few are so high. I got through many (too many) chapters, hoping it would get better. It has the feel of a young adult book, only intended for older women, and with worse grammar. I found myself having to read some of the lines over and over, trying to make sense of what seemed to me as improper conjugation of verbs - how does that get past editing?? What made me finally give up was the use of the Spanish language; if you're going to write in dialogue for a native speaker of a foreign language, make sure you're doing it correctly. At least the book was free, so I feel no financial obligation to read it.

I was offended by the way this book made women look like drunken, loose, bimbos who had no brains whatsoever. Too much stereotyping.

Even at free this book cost too much. The writing is stiff, the plot is contrived, and I don't care about the characters. And the amount of alcohol consumed is outrageous! Put them all in jail in Mexico and give me a storyline that would be interesting.

Vivian Taylor is shocked when her marriage collapses. So what does she do? She calls one of her best friends. Before she knows it, Vivian, and her best friends - Lucy, Kate, and Wendy are on a plane headed for a much needed girls getaway in Mexico. Planning to spend a week on the beach, the girls aren't expecting to be drawn into an investigation of the murder of a young man they'd met on the beach, let alone have one of them be accused of the murder. Determined to clear the name of one of them and to find the real killer, the girls begin an investigation of their own. They have a list of suspects, but the authorities don't take them seriously. Will they be stuck in Mexico indefinitely?

Let me just say that if I hadn't been asked to read this book by the brother of one of the authors, I probably wouldn't have read it. It's not my typical style and genre. That said, I was drawn into the story pretty quickly. The characters are fun and quirky. I love the friendship between the girls. I also love how they are determined to make sure that they take care of each other. The plot twists were intriguing. I loved how the girls were determined to find the killer and gave everyone nicknames on their suspect list. There is quite a lot of humor in the book. Yet there is also a lot of language and drinking in the book too. So if language and drinking offends you, then I don't recommend this to you. However, if it doesn't bother you, you may just enjoy this book. Would I read other things by this author? Maybe. I did grow a bit attached to Lucy, Kate, Wendy, and Vivian.

Recommend to fans of a good beach read, adventure and suspense, and chick lit.

I read this book at the request of a childhood friend of mine, the brother of one of the authors. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rating - I struggled with deciding how many stars to rate it. In my opinion it is really, for me at least, a 3.5 star rating. So for Amazon purposes it's 4 stars.

Poor character development, simple plot. Kept hoping it would get better; I did struggle through, but I was disappointed. I hate to be so critical, but this book was a waste of my time and brain cells.

This story was entirely forgettable but I did stick it out. If you want to read about a group of women partying in Mexico, what they eat and drink and where they dance, this is the book. Way too much detail about alcohol consumption, etc. There was a nice little mystery that eventually developed, but it was a slow simmer and never a real page turner Glad I got it free.

Format: Paperback
Joan Rylen scored BIG in the first book, of which I hope, will be just the beginning of a long literary career! From the first scenes to the last, Joan keeps her audience wondering what will happen next, it is one of those books that you just cannot put down! I finished reading mine in two days and have waited, for what seems like an eternity, for the next one to come out! I am going to have to order "Rocky Mountain Mayhem" on my Kindle, so I will have the scoop on the new book, before all of my friends! My advice to all who are looking for a good, sexy, action-packed read, to check out, "Getaway Girlz" and "Rocky Mountain Mayhem", or you may be left out in the cold!
