5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest, vilest records ever made
The guitarist from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs put it like this: 'In times of indecision, I often think to myself "What would Bushwick Bill do?" Usually I do the opposite because the midget rapper from this crew has been shot in the face and I haven't. Yet.'

That about sums it up. In Dublin in the 1980s, if you were a middle-class suburban teenager (and I'm afraid...

3.0 out of 5 stars This album is just plain violent
This album is just plain violent. They don't rhyme about getting high and they rhyme a little about mackin hoes. The rest is just plain violence. But this album is still good, but not as good as, We Can't Be Stopped. My faves are "Assassins" (originally recorded in 1988), "Do It Like A G.O.", "Size Ain't S--t", "Trigga Happy...

In Dublin in the 1980s, if you were a middle-class suburban teenager (and I'm afraid that in those days it pretty much went without saying that you were a white M.-C. S.T.), you either liked U2 or you didn't. If like me you didn't, then outside of your brother's vintage heavy metal collection there were few signs of life; a lot of rubbish pop music, some big-hair poodle-rock bands, and not a lot else. But then a cousin lent me this album, and at last I saw the light.

The Geto Boys were and for all I know still are not necessarily anyone you'd want to hang out for an evening with, if only because of the risk of gunfire or your girlfriend putting your eye out, but good god could they make a noise. I used to put this on my walkman and play it to people at my school to make them go away. 'Triggy Happy Nigga' is the one I played to death, but 'Gangsta of Love' is without doubt the funniest. One day, long in the future, my kids will play me something that they think is going to offend me, and I'll play them this back. And we'll be quits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely sick and hilarious! A demented masterpiece!, September 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Geto Boys (Audio CD)
Before they became decent, but conventional "gangsta" rappers, the Geto Boys released this demented masterpiece which celebrates serial killers, jailhouse rape, misogyny and other warm family traditions. The Geto Boys try their darndest on their self-titled major-label debut to record the most offensive CD of all time and they pretty much succeed. With the exception of G.G. Allin and the Mentors, I have never heard a more extreme and gleefully sick album. In fact, it's so over-the-top, it's sometimes hard to determine if this is a parody or a portrait of psychotic mind-rot at its finest. Regardless, it will be sure to make you laugh and cringe at the same time. Highly recommended for those who don't want "positivity" or "uplift" sullying their music.

A WORD OF WARNING TO THOSE WHO OWNED THE ORIGINAL DEF AMERICAN VERSION OF THE ALBUM: "Gangsta of Love" now contains a sample of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" as the backing track of the song, instead of Steve Miller's "The Joker".

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gangsta Rap Classic!, August 1, 2000
By
This review is from: Geto Boys (Audio CD)
Forget about Eminem getting "wild" on his CD's. Youwant to hear REAL violence, listen to the lyrics for "Mind of a Lunatic." When I first heard that song I was shocked. This is one of my favorite albums, though. I understand that all the lyrical content is just fictitious. We all still loved the movies Seven, Natural Born Killers, and Pulp Fiction, didn't we? The one downer about this version is that the song "Gangsta of Love" is different than the cassette version I originally purchased in 1990. The original contained Steve Miller's "Gangster of Love" sample from his song "The Joker." This CD release contains "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynard Skynard, but it's all good. I love this album, the lyrics are immensely descriptive and artistic. They just do not make 'em like this anymore. Eminem eat your heart out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly as an A bomb, December 13, 2006
This review is from: Geto Boys (Audio CD)
I had almost forgotten that I had this record, but one recent day, feeling particularly incensed, I remembered it and dug it out. Singing along to f#@* `em, I found myself already feeling much better. The last time I played that track so loud was many years ago when I threw in the towel and walked out of a job, and this time round it had the same highly therapeutic effect. By the time Assassins came on, I had abandoned the idea of becoming one, as my rage had abated, having been absorbed by this first class record, which is as incredible today as when it was first released in 1995. It has some of the catchiest gangsta rap tunes you will ever hear.

As other reviewers have noted, this record is the polar opposite of sweet and the lyrics are seething with anger, nastiness and good 'ol fashioned sexism, although they should not be taken entirely seriously. Still, if you are feeling homicidal, they hit the spot. It is the perfect antidote to a bad day.

Play it loud and feel your troubles and deadly thoughts melt away. Far cheaper than therapy, and beats a murder rap.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is the absolute best of the Geto Boys, May 21, 2001
By
This review is from: Geto Boys (Audio CD)
I first heard this Geto Boys album 8 years ago in 1993 and still today I love it! If you want to hear extremely graphic lyrics about perverse violence, sex and non stop cussing then I would advise you to get this album. I think this album is the best of the Geto Boys out of all their albums. I love this album so much because they don't rap about going to clubs and drinkin crystal and being such a ... made rich ... ...like most of these rappers do now a days, the geto boys are hard and talk about life in the ghetto and committing extremely violent crimes and cuss non stop. Believe me folks you won't be dissapointed on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars My shirt was all bloody, both of my wrists were slit, February 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Geto Boys (Audio CD)
This is by far the best Gheto Boys album they put out. Every song is hard hitting and pure gheto dope. I spent much of my teenage years listening to this album and I didn't go to school with a gun or bomb. All that music causes violence stuff is really overhyped. Gheto boys are the worst of the worst when it comes to violence and hate in rap music. They are the GWAR of rap music so it just starts sounding over the top and comical.
This album has a heavy Scarface theme which is every gangsters favorite movie. This should help you understand the concept and direction they follow. I'd write more but I have to #$%^ someone before the weekends. The sight of blood...you get the picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A seminal classic which belongs in every record collection, July 19, 2008

Ever since the DJ at our wedding reception played "Gangsta of Love" in lieu of our guest's request to hear The Steve Miller Band's "Gangster of Love" my wife and I have been in love with the Geto Boys. I still have vivid memories of her octagenarian Irish grandmother break dancing in the middle of the dance floor and my Italian grandfather proudly (and loudly)singing the choruses in unison with the Maid of Honor. The articulate sincerity of the group's lyrics is at once both metaphorically hauting and inspiring. Although Bushwick does his best to supress any mention of his 4 years of vocal training at Juliard, the operatic overtones are unmistakable. I would recomend this album to anyone with an appreciation of fine vocal art. If you like Puccini, Hayden, Wagner and Mahler, I guarantee that you will love the Geto Boys.

If you're a huge gangsta rap fan, as I am, then you've already heard this album. If you're curious, don't hesitate, get this bad boy for your collection. Be forewarned though, it's not for the faint of heart. It's gangsta rap at it's rawest! This is not more evident than on the Assassins track.

The production and writing is flawless. The beats are seriously phat, and gangsta to the T. These guys are the original Geto Boys, and none of the later versions of the group even compare. This was Scarface at his best, when he used to flow and rap with emotion. The song Scarface is one of the best songs, demonstrating the versatility of the rapper. Willie D. and Bushwick complete the trio and do so extraordinaryly well.

If you want someting to jam to, enjoy the straight up gangsta style of the genre, this is a must own. If you haven't gotten it yet, you don't know what you're missin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Gangsta Rap Album, March 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Geto Boys (Audio CD)
From 'F#@*'Em' blasting parents who tried to ban the album to 'City under Siege' blasting Washington's 'business as usual' politics this album obliterates any idea of censorship or good taste. It's paced with very hip beats, great samples and way over-the-top lyrics and subject matter. Murder, necrophilia, explicit sex...you name the perversion...it's probably in here. Too bad Steve Miller insisted that the sample of his song 'The Joker' be removed...waaaa poor Steve...it was much better than 'Sweet Home Alabama'. Other than that, this album is a gem and a must buy for gangsta rap fans. 'Weak people might say they're insane.'
