Editorial Reviews

This 1976 album never saw a proper release in the U.S., and has only been on CD in Japan, so it ranks as the rarest David Cassidy album in his catalog. Co-produced (with Cassidy) by America's Gerry Beckley, with songwriting (on "Cruise to Harlem") by Brian Wilson and that's Mick Ronson on guitar on the title track!

5.0 out of 5 stars David Cassidy...but definitely NOT Partridge Family March 2, 2013

Recently saw David Cassidy in concert and it revitalized my interest in his music. This CD is nothing like the Partridge Family but is great insight to some of the type of music David prefers...a little edgy, a little blues. It was great hearing this side of his talent after only knowing the "pop" stuff. So versatile!!

In the two years after David Cassidy walked away from Bell Records and his career as a teen idol, he recorded three albums for RCA. The first, The Higher They Climb, found success in Europe and spun out a pre-Barry Manilow hit recording of Bruce Johnston's "I Write the Songs." Cassidy's second album for RCA, Home is Where the Heart Is failed to chart, as did the pre-release singles from this third album. RCA planned and then shelved the album's U.S. release, though apparently copies were pressed and warehoused, as they began showing up in cutout bins three years later.

The album's track list is an eclectic lot, including the autobiographical title tune (featuring the guitar playing of Mick Ronson), the boozy original "Rosa's Cantina," a cover of Harry Nilsson's "The Story of Rock and Roll," and a tune co-written by Cassidy, producer (and America founding member) Gerry Beckley and head Beach Boy, Brian Wilson. The latter, "Cruise to Harlem," has the hallmarks of a mid-70s Brian Wilson tune, with a chugging rhythm and sophisticated vocal arrangement. The album closes with Cassidy's original "Junked Heart Blues," sung in a clenched voice that brings to mind Boz Scaggs.

Cassidy sings with terrific emotion throughout, including a duet with Beckley on "Living a Lie," but his more sophisticated and soulful pop-rock couldn't find a place in the market. One has to wonder whether the "David Cassidy" name was still overshadowed by his earlier fame, making it difficult for listeners to accept him as a bona fide recording artist. The music he made fit well with the commercial mainstream of `76-77, but despite his artistry, chart success was not to be. Real Gone's reissue includes the album's original nine tracks, clocking in at thirty-four minutes, and features liner notes from Michael Ragogna. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5.0 out of 5 stars At last on CD in America September 8, 2012

Probably the rarest album David Cassidy ever released. Not released in the U.S. in any format before this CD.
Originally released at the end of 1976, this was David's third LP on the RCA label following "The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall," and "Home Is Where The Heart Is." The album is very close in sound to those other LPs since David used pretty much the same musicians. Where the first two LPs were co-produced with Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, this album would be co-produced with America's Gerry Beckley. The album has a looser feel than the previous two and the songs weren't as good as the previous albums. The title track has the distinction of being heard during an episode of "David Cassidy-Man Undercover." "The Story Of Rock And Roll" is David's third cover of a Harry Nilsson song on his three RCA albums. Overall the sound is great on this CD. Liner notes could have been a little more informative. Very pleased with this reissue. Can't wait for "Romance" in October. Well done Real Gone Music.
