Skynyrd meets AC/DC!,
By
This review is from: Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By (Audio CD)
It is surely a shame that the talent these guys had didn't allow them to get more exporsure in the mainstream before tragedy cashed them out of the rock and roll scene. In short, this is ONE GREAT CD! Too bad more bands don't emulate or aspire to this high level of rocking, stomping, kicking music. Of course, today's record companies wouldn't know what to do with such a genuine band on their label anyway! These guys are/were great. God Bless them!

I don't remember where I first heard this band but I am glad I did. I have both albums - "Gettin Pretty Good..." and "Nobody Said It Was Easy" I love them both. Hard rocking songs to get me motivated. Great CD for driving alone, volume turned way up!!! If you like Southern Rock, both of these should be in your collection.

I have both Horsemen CD's. Love them both in their own way. Tremendous talent. Tremendous vocals, writing skills and musicianship. Just an astonishingly great CD. More, much more music from this band should have come. At least we have 2 great albums from the Four Horsemen. But when I get through listening to this one, I just sit and wonder...what if?

Frankie Starr R.I.P - Bless you man...,
This review is from: Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By (Audio CD)
This is more of a review of the Four Horsemen as opposed to to a review of the album Gettin' Pretty Good At Barely Gettin' By.... As 2 brothers who love that southern rock sound we can honestly say that we were blown away by The Four Horsemen. If you liked the likes of Junkyard, Rock City Angels, Salty Dog, Little Caesar et al...then you'll freak over these rednecks....Nobody Said It Was Easy was a fine full length debut and more than matched by their second album Gettin Pretty Good....Do your ears a favour and hit your local record shack and pick yourself up a copy of either album (or both) and lay back, sip your bourbon and shut your eyes...dream of riding a fat Harley Davidson! Terry's fave Four Horsemen track is Moonshine..(Nobody Said It Was Easy)...Tony's fave track is Hothead (Nobody Said It Was Easy)...Of The Gettin Pretty Good album then we agree that the best tracks are Hit The Road, Getting Pretty Good At Barely Getting By and Song For Absent Friends...And that kinda sums up the way we feel about the Four Horsemen...Frankie Starr and Ken Montgomery (Singer And Drummer respectively) are no longer on this mortal coil..which is a damn shame..but hey be positive..go buy the records and make sure these gems don't wind up in the 'where are they now?' file... okay...see ya...e-mail us with your comments at kalen@lonestar.fsnet.co.uk

FOUR HORSEMEN ROCK,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By (Audio CD)
So sad that this band dissappeared off the face of the earth (the story of the tragedy these guys have had to deal with is unbelievable). This record is amazing, but not half as good as their first, "Nobody Said it Was Easy". I don't even see that one listed in Amazon! If you ever get a chance to buy it, jump at it! The song "Tired Wings" is a masterpiece. "Something Good/I need a thrill" is a great way to end the record. This thing rocks all the way. If you're a fan of hard rock (but good stuff... not hair metal) in the mold of G'n'R before they went hollywood, then pick this up. Thank me later. If anyone is out there, I'd like to hear from you. I hate to think that I'm the only fan of the Horsemen out there!

This I beleive is a very good album. I rocked long an hard to this band all through the nineties. my only wish is that I could find "Nobody said it was easy" again after my copy was stolen. These guys had a feel that was completly different at the time which would now probably be lost in the shuffle. (again)

No fame for the Horsemen is a travesty!,

This review is from: Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By (Audio CD)
The Four Horsemen produced two of the best albums of the 90's and no one gave a damn! Both 1991's NOBODY SAID IT WAS EASY and 1995's GETTING PRETTY GOOD AT BARELY GETTING BY are loud, raunchy, beer soaked, in-your-face slabs of fun in the tradition of AC-DC. But for reasons known,(Drug and assault convictions for their late lead singer Frank Starr), and unknown, the Horsemen ultimatly fell through the cracks. Considering that all three Four Horsemen releases rock harder than anything Aerosmith or Van Halen have recorded in the last ten years, the public's indifference is truely criminal. If you're a fan of AC-DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and hard rock in general, please do yourself a favor and buy the Horsemen cds while you still can. You wont regret it.

The music MTV and rock radio is afraid to play lives on,

Call me insane, but if I have a choice between the only 3 genres being forced down our throat (teeny pop,hip hop and raprock) I'd pick the pop. At least it's well-crafted-though not crafted by any of the pinup girls and boys singing it. Of course, I can always turn off the radio, and drop these imported redneck rock and rollers in my disc player. Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock, and all the other posers that Mtv force feeds us can't touch this album-and it's probably not as good as their first. This is REAL rock-hard, loud, often funny but almost always coherent. No secret decoder ring required to decipher lyrics; guitars without the speed and fuzz; drums that thunder but don't overwhelm. "Drunk Again" and "Hot Rod" rock harder and cleaner than anything out there current. "Back In Business"-the sequel to "Rockin Is My Business"-demands to be replayed again and again. It's raw sincerity and emotion makes your hair stand on end and makes you laugh as it ridicules the music industry and certain artists that shall remain nameless. It also demonstrates how to correctly and effectively drop an "F-bomb" in the middle of a song. The boys seemed to dial back some of the AC/DC influence and crank up a little extra of the Skynard touches in a reversal of the first CD. The album flows in a very similar manner to the previous and like the first-no programming on your CD player is required. Every song is strong and worth listening to. It's hard to stay unbiased-so I only gave it 3 stars-it probably is a 4. If you like Southern rock this is for you. Why bands like these guys, Junkyard, Georgia Satellites, Tattoo Rodeo can't get played is beyond me.

Haven't yet checked out the last c.d. Just ordered it, but have to say if it's as good as the 1st, you won't be disappointed! I was out of the country, and just learned of Frankie's passing 4 years ago. What a tragedy, and a loss for us all. Frank was a wonderful person, and he'll be missed by those that were lucky enough to have known him. I miss you Baby! Hope things are good in Rock-N-Roll Heaven! |
