Editorial Reviews

Santa Monica, California, June 16, 2004 - Over the past 10 years, Papa Roach went from playing back alley clubs to major arenas & stadiums. Now the DreamWorks/Geffen quartet returns to its smoky, smelly, noisy roots with a U.S. summer club tour, kicking off July 6th in Detroit and winding up on August 6th in Santa Cruz. Papa Roach's new CD "Getting Away With Murder" arrives in stores this September. Said Papa Roach lead singer Jacoby Shaddix, "Any band will tell you, nothing's better than being right in the face of the fans & having them in yours. It is so great for us to be going back to the clubs & re-experiencing that energy you only get in close quarters." Formed in Northern California in 1993, Papa Roach is comprised of Shaddix, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, & Tobin Esperance. They made their recording debut with the 1994 EP "Potatoes For Christmas" followed by their full-length debut "Old Friends From Young Years" & two more indie EP's. When they released their second full-length CD "Infest" in 2000, all hell broke loose. The album went triple-platinum, powered by the mega-hit single "Last Resort." With their 2002 CD, "lovehatetragedy," the band scored a #2 debut on the Billboard Top 200 & a coveted slot on Eminem's Anger Management Tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars "It's never too late to live your life..." September 10, 2004
Format:Audio CD
"Getting Away with Murder" is Papa Roach's best effort to date as in this album you can sense their confidence and grasp with their musical talents more clearly than ever before. While the other two albums were without a doubt great, this one shows the band as more of a solid hard-rock band rather than your typical Nu-Metal performers. While the theme of heartbreak, tragedy and sadness has not changed, the way they approach their demons has changed into a much more solid and distinct sound.

They have completely dropped the rap-rock with this album (it was apparent that they would be doing so since it was hardly on "LoveHateTragedy), and I think they're better for it. While I liked their rap-rock, I think the lead singer has a great singing voice and he gets his point across more clearer in the songs this way. The album is heavy, but not extremely heavy. It's heavy when it needs to be. I really love the guitars and drumming on every single song. They're even more present than ever before. I also can't help but notice the strength of the lyrics in all of these songs, as well. There really are lines and sections of songs that will stay in your head. I'm sure some people will be upset with the sad tone of some of the songs, but if you can't deal with your demons through music, then what else is there left to do?

This is another one of those albums that you do not have to worry about skipping tracks. I loved every single song, but I do have my favorites. The best songs, in my opinion, are "blood (empty promises)," "not listening," "getting away with murder," "be free," "take me," "stop looking start seeing," and "do or die." It's really hard to list favorites, but those are the best tracks. It really is a great album in a whole.

4.0 out of 5 stars a great change May 16, 2006
Format:Audio CD
in the case of sellout i think papa roach defends themselves pretty well with this album. in the death of rap metal, i believe they started losing their fan base and they were starting to become a band that was remembered by "cut my life into pieces." Love Hate Tragedy was horrible and nowhere close to Infest so... they give us this and it is a very well put together cd. more catchy, more melodic plus they have shown us how well rounded they really are. if you are a papa roach fan and are scared to buy this because of the change.. i say go for it. it might suprise you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting Away With Murder January 8, 2005
Format:Audio CD
It's hilarious to listen to Papa Roach fans, especially those who quit on the band after the members failed to replicate their first major label album, Infest, on follow-up Lovehatetragedy. And even now, the fans of Lovehatetragedy are raising their own pitchforks because Papa Roach has done it again: changed their sound. Choosing to ditch the rap-metal angle altogether, Papa Roach has now refined their sound to add more pop-punk elements to their already established hard rock core. This of course doesn't mean the band is becoming a Blink-182; heavy tracks like Blood and Be Free prove that, as well as the title track, which could have been a Lovehatetragedy b-side. However, it's quite refreshing to hear Jacoby Shaddix belt out more heartfelt numbers like Scars and Sometimes alongside anthemic tracks like Not Listening and Do Or Die, and when the band gets knee deep into songs like Stop Looking and Blanket Of Fear, it becomes obvious that they're on to something special. Could Papa Roach have released another rap-metal album like Infest? Of course they could have, but Getting Away With Murder finds the band tighter and more able than ever before, proving that change is never always a bad thing.

This album just blew me away, the new sound of papa roach is just amazing.

1. Blood (Empty Promises)- An awsome song- 5/5

2. Not Listening- Just keeps getting better- 5/5

3. Stop Looking, Start Seeing- Doesnt compare to the first 2 but a good song- 4/5

4. Take Me- Another awsome song- 5/5

5. Getting Away With Murder- The first single off the album, represents what this album is all about-5/5

6. Be Free- A pretty good song, nothing special- 4/5

7. Done With You- Not one of the best songs on the album but its still a good song- 3/5

8. Scars- The second single off the album, a good song- 5/5

9. Sometimes- I love the way how it starts out slow, then turns into another great pap roach song, Another one of my favorites- 5/5

I have to say im pretty disappointed with songs 10 and 11 they dont compare anywhere as near as the first 9 but they arent terrible songs

10. Blanket Of Fear- Eh. -3/5

11. Tyranny Of Normality- Definatley the worst song on the album- 2/5

12. Do Or Die- Another good song, not a big fan of the chorus but its still a pretty good song- 3/5

4.0 out of 5 stars P Roach is back and better than before October 2, 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
With such a tremendously successful debut cd, many bands collapse on the sophomore effort. We've all heard about the sophomore jinx. Papa Roach experienced it big time. With no record deal to speak of, they went into the studio and cut some great songs, got a deal, and brought back the buzz that defined them as a band from the beginning.

"Getting away with Murder" is almost on par with "Last Resot" as far as the debut single goes. The fancy thing about this album, is that it is more diverse, and shows the maturity that "Infest" did not have.

I took away 1 star from the overall rating, for the somewhat simplistic, often semi-corny lyrics on some of the songs. Jacoby, while his singing voice has improved markably since the beginning, hasn't fully matured in a lyrical sense. Most, if not all of the songs are about being depressed, out of it, and having fights with his mate. It doesn't take away from the musical experience with me, but when I sit down and actually pay attention to the lyrics, I'm not blown away.

All in all, very good album, and I'm glad to see the boys back.
