Getting Back To Work was tremendously informative and helpful through the process of establishing and setting goals, self assessment and formulating strengths, networking, setting up interviews and other valuable "pre-flight" areas of the job search. Of particular practical benefit was the unique approach to structuring a powerful and effective resume. This is closely followed by writing proper cover letters and guidance with the all important interview. Overall this insightful, interesting, dynamic book is like a wonderful companion and guide to make the daunting quest for a career that fits, so much easier and even pleasant. It is VERY user friendly.

Overall, I found Linda K. Rolie's book, Getting Back to Work: Everything you need to Bounce Back... to be a refreshing, comprehensive overview of the work search process in the twenty-first century. Her book shows her expertise in the field of career counseling. Furthermore, I realized that many of the recruiters and career counselors today simply do not have the same level of knowledge, skills and abilities as Ms. Rolie. After spending nearly a full weekend reading her book, it showed me: how to improve my resume so that it will stand out from the submissions of other candidates, effective techniques for the format and content of cover letters, how to dramatically improve my references list, and how to include the best possible letters of recommendation. In addition, I especially enjoyed her perspective of online applications. In conclusion, I wish I had found her insightful book over one year ago. However, I have just revised several documents based on her advice and applied for a position this afternoon! What more could you want? Needless to say, her book is a rare treasure!

I wholeheartedly agree with others who have posted reviews here thus far. What I can add is that while this book is written in an easy-to-read, practical format, it sacrifices nothing in both its breadth of critical considerations and its foundations in both research and best practices wisdom. For example, the author makes sure that folks don't lose the forest for the trees. While some might simply focus on the mechanics of writing a professional-looking resume, Ms. Rolie ensures that the reader understands the importance of core competencies that are foundational to one's success in landing a satisfying job, establishing a career, and succeeding once in the workplace. It is as much an exploration in self-examination as it is a technical reference for those who aspire to better themselves in this crazy employment world. Linda does a wonderful job of pointing out the things that are most important to a person in transition. In my work as an executive coach and former president of a company I have met many people going through transition and as I reflected on those conversations I thought how powerful a book like this would have been for them. I shared with my wife, a senior retained executive recruiter, some of the highlights of the book and she also thought they were spot on. Do yourself a favor and give this book a try - it has insights worth learning.Getting Back to Work: Everything You Need to Bounce Back and Get a Job After a Layoff

I have been out of the job searching activity for a very long time, like 9 or so years, so I'm beyond out of practice. Meanwhile, after many false starts, I'm re-energized by this book. I spotted it at a local book store, and decided to buy it used on Amazon.

Easy to use basic info on job hunting, resumes, interviewing, cover letters.
