Excellent!,

This review is from: Getting Old is Criminal (Gladdy Gold Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed "Getting Old is Criminal". All of Gladdy Gold's friends and neighbors are back in this book, though the story focuses on a mystery off-site from Lanai Gardens so they aren't as much a part of the story except for "the girls" who are part of Gladdy's private investigations firm. Gladdy and her "girls" are hired to find out if a wealthy elderly woman living in a luxurious retirement hotel died of natural causes or was murdered and Gladdy and Evvie go under cover in the lap of luxury at a Palm Beach retirement home. This story is a little darker, less slapstick than the previous books. I'd definitely recommend it, but if you're just starting the series begin at the beginning and not with this one.

This installment into Gladdys life is better than the others.
With this one we see the joys and woes of the retirement community even more and of course there are some really funny parts...... sophie taking her "glaucoma" meds... hilarious. The end of the book has a teaser to the new 2008 installment and it promises to solve the crime of Gaddy's husband Jack's murder. Can't wait.

fun geriatric chick lit mystery,
This review is from: Getting Old is Criminal (Gladdy Gold Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
They might be living in a Fort Lauderdale retirement community Lani Gardens, but the women of the Gladdy Gold Detective Agency live life to the fullest with gusto. Led by the irrepressible Gladdy, they take on investigations though they are not licensed sleuths. Currently the distaff detectives work on the case of the Peeping Tom, a men seen looking through the windows of the female residents, but stays in the shadows so has not been caught.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Ferguson hire Gladdy to find proof that his nonagenarian mother died at the hands of Lothario Philip Smythe. However, since the woman had heart trouble and there was no evidence of foul play, the doctor ruled natural causes. Alvin's wife believes her mother-in-law died from a heart attack as well. The detective agency learns that Philip will be in the Wilmington House retirement community so Gladdy and her sister Evvie go undercover as residents to fathom whether he is a killer. As Evvie falls in love with Phillip, evidence begins to surface that he is not what he seems. Gladdy is desperate to save her sister before someone kills her. This geriatric chick lit mystery is a charming and exciting amateur sleuth tale starring the golden girls. The storyline revolves around senior citizens who are portrayed as having more energy than many middle age people (at least this reviewer). Gladdy possesses her full faculties with a mind sharper than a kosher butcher's knife. Her relationships with the women of her agency involve friendship, trust and caring though in some ways she is the grandmotherly hen. Harriet Klausner

I love Gladdy and her four close friends. I wish the author could write faster. I need more of them to read. These are stories about people who are just a little older than I am (I'm 74). Of course, I've never found a body anywhere and I doubt that I could possibly solve the crime if I did. I prefer these stories written about women written by women. Although they have some violence in them(such as people getting murdered) they weave a tale for us without a bunch of gore. Those of us who are old enough know the gore is there, but we really don't want that as part of the story. I'd rather use my imagination about it. Or not.
I have read all five stories in the series so far. I think when someone writes more than one story about the same characters, it is more fun reading the books in the order in which they were written.

I've just finished reading this book, and I like it just as much I liked the other books in this series. The characters are funny, witty, hilarious and lovable. The reason I like this series mostly because other than being a mystery, it also deals with the sad side of aging, losing loved ones, illness etc. A great book for an lazy evening.

Our heroine is 75, but you had better forget all your preconceptions about old age. Glady Gold and her friends solve serious mysteries. As those of us who are older recognize, elderly ladies can be completely unnoticed. This is an ideal arrangement if they go into the detective business. My intention is to read the entire series.

Gladdy and her friends are back - hot on the trail of another killer. While trying to share a romantic rendezous with her boyfriend Jack, Gladdy is called home, thinking one of her friends is seriously ill. Only to find them all alive and well and stuck in the middle of another murder case. Jack is not happy with Gladdy's decision to choose her friends over him and decides they need a break. Gladdy and Evvie go under cover at a retirement home to smoke out the killer - only to find Evvie falling in love with him. I love this series. The characters are hysterical and remind me SO much of the time I spend in south Florida with my grandparents. All the alta kockers hanging out by the pool kibbitzing to their hearts content. I can picture it all so vividly in my head it's like I'm right there with them :) This is probaly my favorite so far.
