3.0 out of 5 stars Beginning Great!...Ending Blah!
I have read 2 books by this author and with both books, the beginning of the books are great then the endings seem rushed. I really enjoyed this book. There was so much detail about the women and how they were wronged. I thought the revenge would be just as detailed. Other than that I really like her writing style and will try a couple more of her books.

4.0 out of 5 stars hot spicy novel, May 7, 2006
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
Though from different walks of life, the three women (Claudia, Annalise, and Lashelle) met at college and have remained friends over the next decades. As they turn thirty each has male problems feeling as if the respective men in their lives mentally abuse them.

Lashelle divorced David over two years ago when his girlfriend introduced herself as the mother of his child. Now he wants Lachelle back and is stalking her though she tells him it is over.

Claudia has been seeing Adam for four years. He owns her heart, but with their nuptials in six weeks, he has major marital doubts.

Five years married to Charles, photographer Annalise is wondering what happened to their relationship. Increasingly they grow apart and the passion they once shared seems dead.

Angry with treatment from the men who should treasure them, the trio bond in their need of GETTING EVEN with males that abused their efforts to please them.

The tale rotates perspective between the three lead females so for much of the novel, the audience actually has a trio of stories until near the end their schemes for vengeance bring the subplots together. This technique makes for fascinating comparisons between how the women cope with male problems, but also never full develops or engages the men. Readers will understand the motives of the women as they on the other hand are three dimensional. Filled with sex and the related "vernacular", fans of contemporary girl loves boy, boy mistreats girl, girl avenges mistreatment tales will want to read this hot spicy novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Woman Scorned is No Joke..., September 29, 2006
By
Lena M. Willis "luv2read" (San Francisco Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
This fun, exciting read is based in the city of Atlanta, where three attractive girlfriends since college all find themselves in their own unique love trials. Claudia is an Atlanta socialite, weeks away from marrying her boyfriend of four years, Adam. He is a successful lawyer, who decided to leave his practice to open a non-profit that serves children that are ill. Lisette is a popular local news anchorman whom after a bitter divorce, finds love with her old college flame, Glen, a pilot for a major airline who occasionally finds himself in Atlanta which is the hub for his airline. Lastly, Annalise is a passionate photographer and is married to Charles, an attorney. Immediately, the reader is made privy to Annalise's frustration with her and Charles' sex life or lack thereof.

As it seems simultaneously - Claudia's wedding is called off, Glen ends up being a fraud, and Annalise catches her husband in an affair - the girls are all able to provide for each other an available ear and a shoulder to cry on. In the same instance, plotting a revenge that is sure to offer them payback for all of the stress, pain, money, and grief caused by their significant others.

This reader enjoyed being a part of the lives of these young women and empathized with each of them; thus, reveling in the ensued consequences by each of the men in their lives for attempting, but not succeeding, in ruining theirs. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys an entertaining read that speaks to heartache, overcoming it, and getting good, old-fashioned revenge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revenge: It is a dish best served cold, September 7, 2006
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderios de LaClos is credited with writing REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD in 1782. That phrase is definitely applicable today. Read Kayla Perrin's May 2006 release, GETTING EVEN. Three unlikely best friends prove their ability to fight back when scorned by the men in their lives.

Claudia, Annelise and Lishelle met in college and have been best friends since. Their personal worlds are about to come apart. There's nothing anyone can do about it, but should they take it and get on with their lives. Just read and see.

Claudia, the undisputed Black American Princess, has been planning the ultimate wedding that will set Atlanta on its ear. The day of the wedding draws near and Adam, her intended, begins to ask her to participate in strange sexual behavior. Is this the darker side of Adam or is there something truly wrong and he's trying to scare her off?

Annelise is the married friend. She and her husband haven't been intimate in a very long time. She's tried everything she knows to entice him and he turns on her, telling her that she puts too much pressure on him. She's an amateur photographer. At a scheduled shoot, a client brings along his brother who begins to show a lot of interest in her. Why?

Lishelle is the unmarried one of the group. Suddenly, the man she loved in college shows up, courts her heavily and asks her to marry him. The whirlwind events leave her little time to really think things through. She agrees to help him with a bank loan so that he can get his new business up and running.

Kayla Perrin has written a story that will keep you alternately laughing, crying and wanting to punch something. What is it the three men have in common? When the women are dumped, they muddle through, even have a pity party. Then it gets serious and they begin to plot their revenge. The ending will make you want to shout and high five all three of these ladies.

The mini-stories in this book are gut wrenching at times. GETTING EVEN is a must read. Kayla Perrin has made her way to my TBB list. She's an awesome storyteller whose characters are real. It isn't often that one can find a book with simultaneous stories going on and still be able to keep up and not have to go back to re-read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned., July 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
This is the first time reading from this author and Perrin tells this story of these three in a very big way. Through out this whole novel I found Claudia's situation the most intriguing.

Adam, Claudia's fiancé, sounds like the most perfect and prestigious man until you found out what a freak and a straight up dog he is. Claudia comes from a well-off family which makes her seem a little posh but strong and vulnerable. She has been planning this expensive wedding for so long until one afternoon he drops a bomb at her that completed devastated and embarrasses not only her but the society that she comes from.

What was done to Annelise was pretty low. She was practically like a "Born again Virgin," It's amazing how long she has been withheld from sex from her own husband Charles. She had a lot of patience with him, not a lot of woman could of done what she did. But I thought she was also a bit naïve even though her sister Samera tried to tell her that her husband has gone astray. She learned it the hard way one night when she came back home unexpectedly. For a woman who has been supportive to her husband through thick and thin should not have gotten a pie thrown in her face in return and that really stung Annelise.

Lishelle is the single girlfriend of the bunch who is a strong, career oriented, and independent. She also has her share of relationship and has also been married at one time. When her long time boyfriend, Glenn, all of sudden reappears in her life her guard is automatically up. But don't let that strong exterior fool you because she is still vulnerable and a woman of her statues also needs a little loving too. Through this episode Glenn seem like a change man wanting a serious relationship, a family, and a business together but all came to halt when Lishelle became approved for the business loan leading Glenn to become unreachable. Lishelle high hopes for her future becomes dark and this lead a plan of vengeance from all three women.

After all have been done and finalize you will form a smile across your face. Kayla Perrin really knows how to pull a story together which explains why she is one of the best selling author's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soooo Hard To Put Down..., December 4, 2007
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
This was my first experience with a Kayla Perrin novel, but it definitely won't be my last. I usually make myself read at least 50 pages of whatever book I'm reading each night, but I just FLEW through this one! I couldn't put it down!

Since this book has already been summarized here, I'm not going to re-hash the plot, but Ms. Perrin does a fantastic job of pulling the reader in and holding their attention to the very end. I will say though...I was a bit taken aback by just how sexually graphic this book was. I mean, some parts of this book would have given Penthouse a run for it's money! Now, this didn't bother me, but I was just absolutely not expecting it. I'm not sure if all her novels are like this, as I said, I'm new to this author, but now I'll be a little more prepared for when I pick up another one of her books!

In the end, I absolutely recommend this book (unless of course you're offended by high sexual content, in which case this is NOT a book for you). Claudia, Lishelle, and Annaliese are three women you can't help but root for. The ending was very satisfying, and I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel to this book, 'Getting Some'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best!!!!!!!, March 10, 2007
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
This book is excellent. She knows how to capture the character as if you are right there with them. If this were a movie who knows how many times I would have seen it by now. I usually dont like to read books that has nore than one character because you usually get confused because they dont know how to seperate them but KAYLA didnt confuse me at all. She seperated them all well. Not one time did I get confused. I read Getting Sme first and at the end of that book I found this one and ordered it off Amazon, local bookstores didnt carry the book. When I started reading this book everything started making sense in Getting Some because they would speak about how they were treated as well as mention names. The way all their men did them was down right wrong. I truly despised men while reading this book. But the way the girls set them up, each and everyone of them deserved it. They couldnt have done it better. I will be reading more of Miss. Perrin's books and I will keep you posted....

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun! Positive African-American female characters, funny and smart dialogue, February 19, 2012
By
This review is from: Getting Even (Paperback)
What makes "Getting Even" work is the sense of familiarity readers will have with the book's female characters. My favorite was Annelise, who is middle-aged and trying to keep her marriage from falling apart. The scene with the maid's outfit had me laughing so hard, I had to put the book down.

This isn't meant to be great literature that will one day be reprinted in third-year college lit textbooks. "Getting Even" is light, fun and enjoyable reading for women, and it's great to read books with African-American characters who are college-educated and upper-middle-class. Perrin's characters aren't impoverished single mothers living in the projects or desperately trying to kick a drug habit - the stereotypes here are few and far between, and it's a nice change of pace.

The writing is also engaging and absolutely first-class. Some writers of this style of fiction use the story plotline as an excuse to fill the empty spaces between sex scenes. Perrin's characters are funny, smart and interesting throughout the entire novel, and the whole book is worth reading. She keeps "Getting Even" lightly erotic without getting overly graphic with the details.

I read this book in two days. Although it was reminiscent of the girls from Sex in the City, The First Wives Club, and Waiting to Exhale... I still enjoyed it. I will probably read another book by this author.

Getting Some , even though had some predictable parts, was very good. I enjoy the author's use of descriptive words to help paint the picture of her story. Very good read, definitely a page turner!
