Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Files's attempt at a Waiting to Exhale is an amusingly superficial but mainly unrealistic sequel to her first book, Scenes from a Sistah, about the same couple of flawlessly beautiful good-time "ghetto" girls living it up in New York City. "Corporate bigwig" Misty Fine has become romantically involved with and ultimately engaged to her boss, Rick, leaving her best "sistah," dancer Reesy Snowden, resentful and wondering what she wants for her own life. Reesy lands the lead in Black Barry's Pie, an off-Broadway musical, and her fantastically successful stage career is launched. Reesy's narration leans heavily on urban slang, which becomes tiresome. Her escapades are entertaining, though outrageously inconceivable, as she hops from one fine lover to another (apparently heedless of AIDS), receives the gift of a Porsche from a boyfriend and even drunkenly flirts with Wesley Snipes?who just happens to be eating at the same restaurant. Reesy's relentlessly silly chatter reveals her as little more than shallow and mean-spirited: though Misty "was always complaining that she didn't have the high, round sistah booty I'd been strapped with, it apparently never stopped her from getting any play." The result is a perfunctory performance clearly angling for the movies. Author tour.

In this novel, feisty and candid Files (Scenes from a Sistah) brings back Reesy Snowden and her best friend, Misty Fine, to wend their way through more turbulent chapters of their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that makes you believe in love and friendship, March 23, 1999

This review is from: Getting to the Good Part (Hardcover)
I sat down to read this book wholeheartedly hoping that I would laugh as much as I did with Scenes from A Sistah. I was not disaapointed. Reesy and Misty share the love, courage, and friendship that I share with my bestfriend. I cried, I laughed, I smiled and I was not disappointed as these two women embraced life with enthusiasm and gusto. Reesy is a woman that you love one minute and hate the other...Misty has found what every woman looks for - "Prince Charming!" I only hope that I can find a Dandre in my life and in the end, Reesy gets a lesson in life. This book is a must read for all of those who believe that there is no such thing as forgiving, friendship, and love!! I read this book in 4 hours!!! Lolita Files is an excellent writer. Her book is easy to read, it's funny, and holds your attention from the first page untill the last. I can hardly wait for her new book. I have recommended this book to all of my friends and bought it as a gift for a few.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, November 2, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One of the worst things about writing a sequel is the author MUST make it as good as if not better than the first one. Ms. Files passed the test. I was happy that Reesy was our potaganist this time around and we were allowed to get into this WILD girl's head. At times I felt she was acting like a 22 year old rather than a 32 year old, but I was impressed with her development throughout the book. Inside her tough as nails "hand in your face" sister-girl deameanor, she was a very emotional and sensitive person. I literally cried tears with her as she discovered a love lost. Ms. Files did an EXCELLENT descriptive job of putting Reesy in touch with her feelings. There's not a woman out there who can't relate to this type of love and pain. It was emotionally real.

We saw a different side of Misty in this story as well. Her character wasn't quite as developed as Reesy's, but her maturity was evident.

I loved the way Ms. Files ended the book on a closed note, not leaving the readers looking for more. EXCELLENT is all I can say.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN'T PUT IT DOWN, November 29, 1999

This review is from: Getting to the Good Part (Hardcover)
This book was captivating. I laughed from the first couple of pages with Reesy at the audition for the play so hard my sides hurt. This book was very well written, you just would never know with the book, but the part I liked most was the love that was shared between Dandre and Reesy I felt the passion and was glad they found their way back to each other again. A damn good book.
