5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocks the Mystery of Learning, February 27, 2009
This review is from: Getting to Got It! Helping Struggling Students Learn How to Learn (Paperback)
Betty Garner has done a wonderful job of giving teachers the practical information they need to identify areas where students lack strong cognitive structures. Not only does she do this, but she gives easy to follow suggestions for helping students build those structures so they can be successful. A must read for all teachers Pre-K to adult learners.

For teachers interested in developing their student's ability to make meaning of data, this book is a must read. Getting to Got It provides practical activities teachers and parents can use to help their charges recognize, memorize, and classify sensory data. In addition, Dr. Garner offers learning activities to teach students to develop spatial and temporal orientation and metaphorical thinking.

Getting to Got It! Helping Struggling Students Learn How to Learn

This book will change your life. It offers practical help for students, teachers, and parents. IT WORKS! I tutored this summer using strategies and activities from Garner's book; one student told her parents, "I think differently now." This is the best tool I've put in my teaching tool belt. I'm grateful to Betty Garner for her research!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for a Non-Educator, March 30, 2008

I got this because I was intrigued by a friend's comments. I'm not an educator, and found it fairly accessible. Biggest strength -- chapter on spirituality. It's very broad in how "spirit" is defined, yet speaks to one of the most important aspects related to learning, which is a person's sense of safety and connectness in the world, which creates an initial openness to being taught and learning.
