5.0 out of 5 stars Damn Funny and Insightful!
"Getting To Howard" is an entertaining read and a laugh a page because you really get the idea of how obsessed Stern's fans can be.

This is like no other Stern book out there.

1.0 out of 5 stars Approaching the Stern Show From a Stalker's Point of View
The title above should've been the REAL title of this book. Dan Wagner is too self-congradulatory in his point-of-view in this book. Yes, he is an obsessed fan, but he's closer to a stalker. If you're a Stern show listener, the one star I gave this book is for you if you enjoy reading about some of the "behind the scenes" activities the author witnessed when he...

4.0 out of 5 stars "Private Parts" from the other side of the radio -- great!, June 4, 1999

This review is from: Getting to Howard: The Odyssey of an Obsessed Howard Stern Fan (Hardcover)
Dan Wagner has crafted THE most engaging Howard Stern book that Howard himself didn't write. It truly stuck me as the first real Stern fan bible, bouncing back and forth between determined and grossly obsessed. As a Stern fan myself, I was constantly amazed at Wagner's endurance and craftiness. Every fan should read this book, and throw those stupid "King of All Media" unauthorized bios into a big friggin campfire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional writing from a common man (no offense Mr Wagner), May 29, 1999

As a longtime fan of Howards, after seeing and wondering how these kooks and characters get on the phones/show...Dans somewhat personal adventures hit home with many listeners I'm sure. Sitting around at 6;30 am wondering how you can get to talk to howard or meet him, he's done it! You also have to laugh and enjoy the behind the scenes info on some of Howards weirdest showpieces like crackhead bob, kenneth keith, elephant boy, and king of all losers Melrose Larry Green. I loved the book and was sad to finish, Dan is a witty guy with great writing/word skills. ALot of us probably want to write a book on Howard or our favorite celeb, but he actually did it. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, December 30, 1998

I thought Getting to Howard was just going to be a picture book with some short explanations of what the pictures were. Well, I was wrong. What it turned out to be is a very well written and entertaining book about how the author worked his way into the Howard Stern domain.

It takes something pretty entertaining to keep me interested and this book did it. The first chapter explains how Dan got addicted to hearing his faxes read on the air by Howard and Robin. I could relate to this since I did the same thing a few years back. The only thing is that Dan took it many steps further than I ever did.

Other chapters in the book tell how Dan tried to get near Howard himself. He went to one of Howard's book signings, entered contests and came up with schemes to fool Howard. He even gave Howard an Emmy Award to get on the show.

Dan must have taken some pretty intense notes right from the first fax because he has all the dates and times for most of his actions. It kept me interested right through the last page of the book and that's saying a lot.

Other interesting things in the book include Dan's day with Fred the Elephant Boy, a day with Kenneth Keith Kallenbach and his girlfriend, meeting Fred Norris and meeting Jackie. And finally learn how Dan made it into Howard's birthday show.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Look From a Fan's View..., January 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Getting to Howard: The Odyssey of an Obsessed Howard Stern Fan (Hardcover)
"Getting to Howard" is an insightful memoir on what it's like to be an obsessed fan and to finally meet and interact with the one you worship. Dan Wagner takes us from his "faxing" beginnings and leads us through a personal story of meeting other Stern cronies and wack packers. Finally Wagner scams "The King of All Media" and producer Gary Dell'Abate into believing an outlandish story of aquiring Stern an Emmy award.

Unlike previous books by fans which merely recycle Stern's own writings, Wagner takes a truly fresh perspective and comes up with an original. Granted this book is not "Tolstoy"... and it never tries to be; however if you are a Stern fan it is easily worth the money for this entertaining hardcover.

Getting To Howard is fan-f-ing-tastic. It's the best book of all time. Better than King or Grisham or even Stern. The photos are fan-f-ing-tastic too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun and insightful read...I was sorry when I finished it., May 4, 1999

Getting close to Howard thanks to Dan, allows the reader to do just that. Dan gives excellent first hand accounts of his attempts to meet up with the King of all Media.

His style and thoughtful insight make this book an excellent and easy read. Not only does Dan write about Stern, but he also offers great insight into the other radio characters that Stern fans love to hear about. Dan pulls no punches and is quick to point out the blunt realities surrounding Fred, Gary, Jackie, Stuttering John and even Howard himself.

I promise that readers will enjoy this book and will find themselves getting even Closer to Howard when they are finished reading it.

I look forward to other books in the future that will be written by Dan......his personable style is very relaxing and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan Mail From Some Flounder., June 30, 1999

I loved Getting To Howard. The events described in the book are funny, entertaining, amusing, witty, scary, enlightening, fascinating, and downright amazing? Sorry, but I'm running out of superlatives, and laxatives! -- LOL! The photos are great, too. Of course any book about Howard Stern is bound to generate controversy and attract jealous, mean-spirited party-poopers as evidenced by the one or two negative reviews on this web site. Anyway, take it from me, Ivan Ivanovich, Getting To Howard is a great f-ing book and well worth the measly price. My favorite chapter was "Happy Birthday, Howard!" (Wagner tells the tale of how he crashed Stern's last Birthday Party.) Oh yeah, the gold-stamping underneath the dust jacket is the funniest thing I've ever seen. (I won't spoil the surprise by spilling the beans.) One last comment -- F-JACKIE!

Great Book btw Dan, I received my copy very fast, signed and in perfect condition. I am starting chapter 3 already so far I love it. The only downside is I will be spending less time on SFN, Your Book has opened my eyes. I took your book down to my community pool and took off the front cover, b/c I felt creepy reading a book called "Getting to Howard" in front of all the Hott Milfs. Thanks Again, Highly Recommend...
