Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

There is one basic difference between this book and the many others on similar topics: This one works! For over 20 years, the author has refined techniques presented here , and they have helped over a million people find better jobs in less time. These techniques increase results in job search programs -- even in areas of high unemployment -- for career changers, students, unemployed professionals, and anyone planning a career or looking for a job. In a project demonstrating the techniques in this book, 96 percent of the participants got jobs in an average of 21 days. Remarkable, this occurred in the city with the highest unemployment rate at the time -- over 25 percent. This completely revised book provides practical and easy-to-use advice in a lively, interactive, and interesting format. Whether you have a clear job objective or not, Getting the Job You Really Want will help. You learn quickly how to:

Identify your key skills
Define your ideal job
Explore career alternatives
Find the hidden 70 percent of unadvertised jobs
Use the phone to get two interviews a day
Create superior resumes
Cut your job search time in half!
Succeed and move up on a new job

Many consider Getting the Job You Really Want the best book of its kind because of its results-oriented approach. This might explain why the author's books are the most widely used in job search programs in North America.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was excellent, May 29, 2003

This book is worth buying. It has very practical advice and a system about how to go about a job search in the non traditional way. I would also recommend Richard Bolles' What Color is Your Parachute and Howard Figler's The Complete Job Search Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Your Career Development, December 21, 2005
By
Farr's book was recommended by my thesis committee member and now I recommend it to students that I mentor. Too bad Betty lumped Farr's book with "What color is my parachute". I was never able to slog my way through that book, but did many of the exercises in Farr's book while doing nordic track because they were so straight forward. I liked how he has you 'free-thinking' about what career you would enjoy if there were no limitations and then helps you bring that back to reality so you can see what IS possible for you to do with your career right now. The step-by-step exercise of breaking down time to meet your goal was invaluable as I was finishing my PhD research. And I still use it today. I strongly feel that his book gave direction to my career. I currently enjoy my position as a director of a department in a pharmaceutical company.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book won the top career book of the year award, May 27, 2004
I am this book's author and think it worthwhile to note that this book won the Publisher's Marketing Association's "Best Career Book of the Year" award. This was a surprise for me since this is a workbook that includes text with lots of in-the-book activities rather than a typical bookstore book that is almost all text. This is the fourth edition, so it has been carefully improved over time and has had excellent editorial and design work. It has now sold more than 400,000 copies, a most flattering and humbling situation for me.
