Book Description

July 1, 2001
Crime is the favourite topic of talk-back 'shock jocks' and self-important newspaper columnists. Lurid accounts of the doings of crims and corrupt cops, the use of mangled statistics, 'crime waves' and calls for politicians, judges, police (someone, anyone) to 'get tough on crime' always find an audience. 'Zero tolerance policing' and 'mandatory sentencing' are the latest demands of those trading on public anxiety.

Nicholas Cowdery knows the criminal justice system inside out. A noted advocate, he's decided to demolish the claims of those who dominate the airways in a series of crisp and witty essays which set the record straight.

It takes genius to explain a subject that many struggle with and present it with effective simplicity. Professor Cowdery does not mask the truth about the criminal process but reveals it. Many have a tendency to view the criminal system as means of achieving justice, but Cowdery explains it is more than that, it is also a safeguard of liberty.

I believe many forget that innocent people have stood before the court accused of a crime, therefore without this system in place, liberty of the individual may be jeopardised. Cowdery has also linked Human Rights to the criminal system, and I see this link as a necessary partnership.

A great line in the book:

'Poor people may take what they believe should be theirs; but they also miss in so many direct and indirect ways on what society should be providing, and that can lead to crimes of frustration and despair.'

An honest description of the area of criminal law and I recommend this book to anyone who is confused about justice within the criminal system.

Impossible to review, since the book I purchased didn't arrive - even though I paid for express postage. Would never buy from Amazon again.
