This book was designed to teach the use of ArcView software, but it also gives a good start on understanding the uses of geographic information software. It has been adopted by many colleges and universities as their introductory GIS textbook, but for this purpose it is best paired with a general introductory textbook on GIS, such as the Clarke, Chrisman, or DeMers book. For someone looking to buy a desktop GIS program, this is the best (and most economical) way to find out if the technology will meet your needs
