Book Description

September 11, 2007
Medical acupuncture stands out among the alternative health modalities for ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and applicability to a wide range of conditions. In Getting to Know You, Dr. Joe Helms uses down-to-earth language to help readers make the best use of this treatment. He clearly identifies what sorts of problems respond best to medical acupuncture and distinguishes between constitutional characteristics and early indicators of health conditions.

Getting to Know You features real-world patient cases in medical acupuncture and promotes applied learning throughout, inviting readers to identify traits and symptoms they see in themselves. To this end, Dr. Helms provides a list of questions to clarify the reader’s dominant type. For each type, guidelines are presented with common-sense changes to promote optimal health. The book conveys a wealth of complex medical information in simple terms, including elusive classical acupuncture models such as the circulation of energy and the five phases of treatment. A useful appendix further highlights acupuncture’s benefits, while a reference list makes it easy to find practitioners in the U.S.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dr. Joe Helms is the father of medical acupuncture in America. I’ve been enthusiastically recommending his work to physicians and patients for almost thirty years. In his new book he combines the ancient art of acupuncture with his extensive experience in treating illnesses and observing human behavior. The result is a practical guide that can help anyone have better health.”
—Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and Mother-Daughter Wisdom

“Dr. Helms has long been the premier educator of physicians in the art of medical acupuncture. In this book he shows how acupuncture can make sense of much of what goes wrong with us—even at te earliest signs of disturbance—and help us in our medical decisions. Getting to Know You is the premier source for the thinking public to understand and integrate acupuncture into their personal health care.”
—Andrew Weil, M.D., author of Spontaneous Healing and Healthy Aging

“Joe Helms describes an approach to health and disease where there is no division between the mind and the body. Each chapter made me more enthusiastic about insights from the acupuncture tradition and how I can help myself to be healthier, even without needle. I found out more about myself, my family, and my friends by reading this book than I could have ever imagined. I think all patients and physicians will benefit from this time-honored perspective. “
—Kenneth Pelletier, PhD, MD, author of Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer and The Best Alternative Medicine

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting to Know You, September 12, 2007

This review is from: Getting to Know You: A Physician Explains How Acupuncture Helps You Be the Best YOU (Hardcover)
Getting to Know You promotes a complementary system of health care that starts with our personal awareness of our constitutional makeup and the changes in our body over time, and then combines that awareness with acupuncture and conventional approaches to medicine. Dr. Helms posits that this biological-psychological awareness, plus life style changes and strengthening our physical vulnerabilities to ailments, supports improved health and well being, especially when added to acupuncture maintenance treatments.

The book offers insights into both patient and physician perspectives regarding acupuncture through patient examples in the chapters and a running footer throughout half the book. After reading the book I was motivated to identify my bio-psychotype by filling out the questionnaire on line www.acupunctureprofessor.com and take better charge of my own energy and wellness. I even found a Helms graduate near my home and have started a series of treatments.

I feel a lot more in control of my life and health since following some of the guidance in Getting to Know You, and am submitting this comment in hopes that other people like me will get the same benefit. It's fun and easy to read, and well worth the time and study.

Dr. Helms is an excellent writer and makes the topic of acupuncture and how an acupuncturist thinks clear to the lay person reader. I have recommended this book to many of my patients and it is universally embraced. Taking a little of the mystery out of the acupuncture practice makes it more comfortable for patients, and I believe will help mainstream medicine accept this safe and healthy complement to the care of patients.

We can now begin to appreciate our strengths and weaknesses, formulate our own pathways for rebalancing and ultimately live healtier, more enriched lives. I highly recommend this book!
