Book Description

Thorndike Mystery April 2009
Back from schlepping all over New York City, P.I. Gladdy Gold is happy to be on her Florida turf again. Especially now that she and boyfriend Jack Langford are officially an item. But no sooner have the yenta brigade gotten back to their routine—complete with poolside stretching and kvetching—than a notorious outlaw, a.k.a. the “Grandpa Bandit,” issues Gladdy’s detective agency a direct challenge: Catch me if you can.

The dapper thief has already knocked over six Fort Lauderdale banks, with no end in sight. It’s up to Gladdy and the girls to stop him before he hits the next one. But when a killer hurricane leads to the discovery of a fifty-year-old skeleton, they have to put the bandit on the back burner. With the storm wreaking havoc and a dark mystery swirling around the Lanai Gardens retirement community, Gladdy and the girls are about to confront a ruthless killer determined to bury the past—and them along with it….

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When a hurricane strikes Fort Lauderdale, it wreaks havoc on the Lanai Gardens apartment complex and launches self-appointed PI Gladdy Gold's fifth mystery (after 2007's Getting Old Is to Die For). Discovered beneath the debris of a building, a long-buried skeleton yields few clues beyond that the victim was murdered, but that doesn't stop Gladdy and her delightful coterie of elderly crime busters from investigating. They're also trying to nab the bank-robbing Grandpa Bandit and comforting a neighbor, concentration camp survivor Enya, who suffers repeated nightmares. Gladdy's intermittent romance with retired cop Jack Langford veers close to consummation, but she never lets that distract her from the case. Lakin skillfully combines human comedy and a touch of Jewish humor with suspense while unveiling startling connections and plenty of twists. (Jan.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable, January 11, 2009
Gaddy Gold is back in her fifth mystery!
Gaddy is a self-proclaimed P.I. and her world is turned into chaos when a hurricane hits Lanai Garden Apartments and with the passing of the storm, comes a new mystery for her and her gals. A skeleton has been discovered and there is not many clues but there is enough to know that this dead person has been murdered. To add to the excitement she has been challenged by the "Grandpa Bandit." Daring her to catch him if she can. Well, Gaddy is not going to let that challenge pass but first her and her girls are going to have to stay a few steps ahead of a murder that is not thrilled to find out a skeleton has been unearthed. This killer will do what he must in order to make sure it's dead and buried and if Gaddy gets in the way she may just find herself keeping company with the dead herself.

This is the first time I've read any of Ms. Lakin's titles and I was immensely entertained with the witty actions of Gaddy and her cohorts. If you like a few laughs along with very likeable characters, and edge of your seat mystery, you're going to really enjoy this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars spunky senior citizens sleuths, January 3, 2009

It is finally official, Gladdy and Jack are a couple. Both live in the Lanai Gardens condominium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she and her four friends run a private detective business and he is a former detective who enjoys his retirement. Both want to consummate their love, but each time they try, a crisis surfaces; somebody needs her or a case arises. Jack rents a room in the Keys as a getaway, but alas they are interrupted again this time by a hurricane

They return home as Jack's building has collapsed. Meanwhile Gladdy and her crew are trying to locate a bank robber who has taunted them. He even tells them which bank he will rob; when it occurs as described Gladdy and her intrepid geriatric sleuths set up a plan to catch a thief. A skeleton is found in the subbasement of Jack's demolished building; the builder Stanley Heyer asks Gladdy to identify the body. This fifty year old cold case has roots in Nazi Germany but pose modern day danger to the detectives.

In her fifth mystery, Gladdy and her peers prove there is plenty of life in septuagenarians as they team is up to the challenge of the bank robber and a cold killer. There are the two mysteries in this latest "Getting Old" tale with both complex and not easy to determine who the culprits are. However, as always in Rita Lakin's homage to the elderly, it is the cast especially Gladdy who make for a spunky sensational senior citizens sleuthing series.
