Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

There is hope and help for women having difficulty becoming pregnant, assures Lauerson, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York Medical College. The author of several books on women's health, with journalist Bouchez he here describes what factors affect fertility, as well as environmental and bacterial threats to both male and female fertility. But more important, the coauthors show what steps can be taken to prevent or remedy impediments, including ovarian cysts, fibroids, sexually transmitted diseases, pelvic inflammatory disease and endometriosis. Although many guides to becoming pregnant focus on the female, this contains a comprehensive chapter on threats to male fertility--sexual infections, high blood pressure and diabetes. Unfortunately, some well-known fertility problems, such as a woman's prenatal exposure to diethystilbestrol (DES), are mentioned but not discussed fully. For the couple still unable to conceive, Lauersen and Bouchez offer know-how on in vitro fertilization procedures and programs. A brief but helpful resource section lists the names of medical associations, self-help groups and physicians specializing in reproductive medicine.

From Library Journal

Lauersen, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology andauthor of five other books, and journalist Bouchez describe how thereproductive system functions and what can go wrong. Encouragingreaders to use this knowledge to maximum advantage in order to achievepregnancy, they focus less on new technologies than on the practicalchanges couples can make in their everyday lives to enhance thepossibility of conception and successful pregnancy. The authorsexplain the effects of stress, exercise, work, and drugs, both legaland illegal, on fertility. They also provide information on the linksbetween diet and conception, the prevention of miscarriage, and anutritional plan designed to enhance fertility. The final section,"Personal Pregnancy Planner," is a six-month guide designed to "helpyou have a faster, easier, most important, healthier conception whenyou want to." This book provides practical advice without promotinga particular method, as did A. Toth's The Fertility Solution ( LJ2/1/91). It covers much of the same ground but in far less detail thanSherman Silber's How To Get Pregnant with the New Technology ( LJ2/1/91). Recommended for popular medical collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful for every couple who want children, September 25, 1999

This review is from: Getting Pregnant: What Couples Need to Know Right Now (Paperback)
This is a wonderful well-written and informative book. I bought this book almost 5 years ago and read it cover to cover. When we decided it was time for our second child I went through the book, tried all of the techniques and got pregnant on the very first try! We were also lucky enough to be blessed with the girl we were trying for. Now we have two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. Not only do I recommend this book highly; I give it out as gifts to friends who are trying to conceive. I know there are a few reviews listed here that do not agree so, I suggest you get this book and see for yourself and I am sure will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the book, followed the advice, got pregnant ! YAY !, September 8, 1999

This review is from: Getting Pregnant: What Couples Need to Know Right Now (Paperback)
A little over a year ago I purchased Getting PRegnant . After 4 years of unnsuccessfully trying to get pregnant, I now have a beautiful baby girl - and I owe it all to this book

In fact, after reading every book on the subject I could find, I had just about given up hope. Then a friend told me about this book and said that the New York Review of Books placed it in their Dream Library of the best books in print. I decided to give it one last shot - so I bought it.

Consequently, I follwed the advice, and within a few months I got pregnant ! My husband and I are thrilled and my doctor is so pleased he's now recommending the book to all his patients.

What made this book so very special for me was that it not only gave all the info about the high tech treatments ( most of which we couldn't afford anyway) it also gave " real solutions" for "real people" - things my husband and I could do on our own to increase our fertility - and those things really do work . It's amazing how some of the simplist things can do so much good.

WHen I decided to come to this web site tonight to let others know my experience, I was very surprised to read a comment that said this book wasn't as well written as his others. I dind't find that at all. In fact, one of the reasons I didn't buy this book initially was because I had read his last two books and found them so badly written I couldn't even get half way through. They were confusing and boring. But this book was so full of life and hope and promise, it made me feel great from page one - and I think, somehow, that helped make a difference in getting me to follow the advice.

Not only is this book easy to read and understand, my doctor was impressed with the science and the accuracey and that's good enough for me !

So please, if you are having a problem getting pregant, buy this book. If you get it tonight, a year from now you can also have your dream baby, just like I do ! Thank you , thank you, thank you Dr. Lauersen and Collete Bouchez for helping me become a mother !

This review is from: Getting Pregnant: What Couples Need to Know Right Now (Paperback)
I used Getting Pregnant as a resource for both of my pregnancies and plan to use it again as I contemplate a third. It helped me to make decisions concerning diet and supplementation during preconception; practices that help to minimize the risk of miscarriage after conception; and lifestyle choices throughout pregnancy. The book's section on vitamin supplements for pre-conception and conception was very thorough. It was also the most complete list I've seen of everyday hazards to avoid during pregnancy. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to be well-informed and very prepared before conceiving and being pregnant.
