... and this book shows you all the mistakes you have been doing for so long. Once you start editing your text, you realize how much clearer and more efficient it feels. Everything gets simple when somebody actually tells you where the mistakes are and what editors expect from you as a writer. This completely changed my way of editing papers. In addition, it reads so easily that you don't fall asleep trying to understand which adverb goes where!

I advise any non-native English speaker like me to read it along with a piece of text you have written. You will actually find examples in your text of typical mistakes and figure out what went wrong. This is eye-opening...

This book is a must for any European student or scholar who wants to publish in top journals. To learn how to make your writing style more attractive to those journals, definitely start with Getting Published in International Journals. It systematically takes you through all you need, from building strong sentences and writing effective paragraphs to framing and assembling the entire article according to a well-done journal analysis. You will want to use this book over and over. You will also start reading articles differently--and more easily adapt your work for publication in your target journal.

Format: Paperback
Natalie Reid leads us through all steps of the process of getting our papers published. Starting with the fundamental understanding of writing in English she develops a whole strategy for scientific writing. This strategy is divided into 5 parts: First, we learn how and why we reduce our text to essential ideas. Then, we find our way to clarify it even more by reducing ambiguities. After this fundamental optimizations Natalie Reid introduces key characteristics of the Anglo-American organization and argumentation of scientific texts. Afterwards, we learn how we could analyze Journals to understand submissions and traditions. Finally, she concludes her guide by explaining how good revisions should be done - for our own and other one's papers.

A great characteristic of this book is that Natalie Reid always explains why a certain way is better than another one. These comparisons between right and wrong, poor and correct, good and better make it so easy to understand what and how good scientific writing should be. Therefore, this book is not a simple hands-on guide as we can find it too often. This book helps us to better organize our whole process of scientific working. For myself, it gave me a better idea in general and still helps to continuously improve my writing.

I recommend this book to researchers as well as to students. Researchers find all relevant information and hints in an easily accessible manner. For students, this books is relevant as it explains the processes in detail, but in a very understandable way. Thus, this book is an essential resource for my courses on scientific working.

This is the book I have been waiting for my entire professional career. Both its perspective and its contents are invaluable. All
social scientists should read it and keep it on their desks for frequent referral. (Jon Kvist, professor, University of Southern Denmark)

Format: Paperback
Had this book been available when I was teaching Freshman Composition at University of Maryland, I would happily have ignored the required Harbrace College Handbook and told students to purchase this one instead. Parts II (cutting) and III (clarity) would have been especially helpful to my students who wrote "like weary old men." Natalie Reid has done a great service to all writers, not just European Social Scientists!
