Book Description

You have too much stuff!

Your closets are filled with clothes you never wear. You have not seen your kitchen counters in months. Your junk drawer has exploded into an entire room of things you don't use. How can we say that when we don't even know you? Well, because most people do and we were just like you.

In 2008 we put our decluttering and downsizing skills to the ultimate test: get rid of everything we owned in order to follow our dream and travel around the world. During that experience we documented every step in the process to provide you with the comprehensive guide to help you declutter your home and put some extra cash in your pocket.

How do you think your life could change if you got rid of some of the stuff tying you down?

You don't have to go as far as we did, but you'll benefit from our hands-on experience no matter big or small your decluttering project may be. We know decluttering inside and out, and you can take advantage of our experience to create your own clutter-free zone for relaxing, socializing, and spending time with family and friends.

This is your guide to removing clutter so you can get on living the life you want.

About the Author

Warren and Betsy Talbot are a 40-something type-A couple who learned that living large is not necessarily living well. They did all the typical things people do in their 20s and 30s until they realized they were in love with each other, but not with their lives.
Health scares in two people very close to them caused them to reevaluate life, and they decided to jump off the hamster wheel to sell everything they owned and save enough money to travel around the world.
Getting Rid of It is their first book. They wrote their second book, Dream Save Do: Stop Dreaming and Start Living, in honor of their first anniversary of full-time travel. Their core message? Life is short. Live your dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reverse Your Hangers! January 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There's nothing more frustrating then getting advice from someone who hasn't walked the walk. Betsy and Warren are the exact opposite of this--having decluttered and simplified their life for their amazing travel journeys (you really need to read their other book Dream-Save-Do, a fascinating and inspiring read, to get the full story).

Even as a reformed packrat I found tons of great ideas to get rid of the things around me just taking up space and not adding anything to my life. And it doesn't have to be a 3 week project, it can be as easy as doing just one of their exercises to get started. I went immediately to my closet and did their "reversed hangers" exercise, and as I was doing it already intuitively knew that about 30% of my shirts and sportcoats are going to end up in the goodwill pile after this experiment is over.

The kitchen pantry and utensil drawers are next!

Great book, easy read, practical advice--thanks guys and hope the journey is going well!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE How to De-Clutter and Reclaim Your Home Book December 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been doing a bit of research as of late on the actual 'how to's' of decluttering. So many books and resources talk about the benefits of doing it but very few tell you actually 'how to do it'. Getting Rid of It gives you step by step details on not only how to slowly (and comfortably) start sorting through your stuff but how to sell it, donate it and get rid of it through a number of different channels and creative ways. It is the official no more excuses guide to reclaiming your home for clutter. A serious must read for anyone ready to be rid of the clutter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, practical and fun guide to decluttering November 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Talbot's have written a funny, entertaining and practical book about decluttering your home - and your life. Unlike other organizing books, these two have "been there and done that" by selling all their possessions and taking off to travel the world. They give great advice in each chapter about how to tackle the process (mentally and physically) and then even go room by room to show tips and tricks. I liked the practical exercises and steps they give, rather than just giving "organizational theory." You can literally follow the steps one by one and make a difference. And there's no "system" you need to buy - just heed their advice! This is a great, easy, useful and entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't get rid of this book January 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There are many books on getting rid of the clutter in your life. The authors have a different take on things. They downsized their lives in order to raise money for the ability to travel the world without having to work.
I hate tag sales, but their suggestions for using Craig's List and eBay to sell unwanted items as soon as you know you don't need/want them anymore were great -- eliminates the clutter immediately and gets some cash in your hand.

I ended up reading the whole book in a night! Betsy and Warren Talbot have created a simple, step-by-step guide to scale down your possessions in a way that is both enjoyable to read and easy to put into practice. The best part is that the Talbots walk the walk here, having downsized from a large suburban home to a pair of backpacks and two passports, so you know they know what they're talking about. Some of the ideas are the obvious steps, while others are so smart and ones I would have never thought to implement. If you are looking to get rid of the clutter, I honestly can't think of another book you would need. Plus, since you're de-cluttering, you should really only get the one, and it should be this one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book! November 28, 2011

I'll keep this simple (after all, the book is about decluttering, right?)

There is all kinds of decluttering advice out there, but Betsy and Warren have the edge for a lot of reasons. First, they've done everything they recommend and perfected the process. Second, the book is simple and easy to follow along with containing some tips that were new to me. And finally, they make it fun to read and inspiring. I read it in one sitting and immediately tackled my home office.

Don't think about it one second longer, just buy it. You won't be disappointed.

This book was an easy read and helped us realize how much "stuff" we had that we weren't using and showed us how to make some money by getting rid of it. Easy to follow steps on how to clear out your clutter and put some money in our pocket. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to clean out a closet or a whole basement. Very easy to follow and gives you specific steps to follow.

What I enjoyed above all as I read this very practical and useful book was that it's authors weren't just writing from theory; these folks are simply writing about an expertise they have developed through experience. It is also great that none of the strategies they share are very complicated--they're clearly easy to implement but you also recognize immediately how effective they will be as well.
