Book Description

May 31, 2001 0595184464 978-0595184460 2
This is the second edition of a book about a little understood subject, the dramatic reform of the American military, and particularly the U.S. Army, between the end of the Vietnam war and the Persian Gulf war of 1990-91. The second edition material carries the study through the 1990s and a few years beyond. We cover a lot of subjects that few Americans are familiar with. The reforms after Vietnam were more driven by the results of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and paid for by defense spending increases begun by president Carter. The end of the Cold War ended up creating a need for more reforms.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Analysis of Post-Vietnam American Military, December 9, 2011

This review is from: Getting It Right, Second Edition: American Military Reforms After Vietnam and Into the 21st Century (Paperback)
Dunnigan's a brilliant writer, i've read almost everything he's written. This book is an analysis of what went wrong with the US military during the Vietnam war and how it got slowly fixed, during the 1970's and 1980's, to be the unstoppable juggernaut it is today.

there's an awful lot of question left unanswered, and really not enough about the politics or human factors during the era (particularly the failure of the joint US German MBT-70 tank) that affected the US military during this time. Overall, a good solid book for war freaks but a little too light for my taste. I bought it once, i lost it during several moves, will i buy it again, no.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amateur's opinion, November 27, 2001

This review is from: Getting It Right, Second Edition: American Military Reforms After Vietnam and Into the 21st Century (Paperback)
Just as _Death Ground_ brings _On Infantry_ to the present so _Getting It Right_ brings _The American Way of War_ to the present. It covers the 3 secrets of successful armies: practice, practice, practice and how the US Military did it, mainly the Army.
