Book Description

February 1, 2007 1856694747 978-1856694742
Typography is no longer the specialist domain of the typesetter: these days anyone who uses a computer has access to a wide range of typefaces and effects. This book offers an introduction to the basics of typography, including choosing which typeface to use; adjusting letter-, line-, and word-spacing for improved legibility; understanding kerning and leading; and mastering typographic details, such as italics, punctuation, and line endings. The book is illustrated throughout with practical examples demonstrating good and bad solutions. There are tips for specific design tasks, such as letters, charts, tables, and design for the screen, and a glossary explaining typographic terms.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "keep it close at all times" kind of book September 11, 2010

I will always have this book handy. So resourceful and easy to take in, all the great tips and guides in "Getting it Right with Type" made it everything I was looking for in a book about typography. I'm a fourth year advertising student and this book has truly made an impact on my design. I would recommend this to any student or young professional out there. Even if you think you know great typography, get this book. It's a great reference, if nothing else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional information: terrible presentation. February 21, 2012

Review title says it all: text set in light blue or khaki as a tint: awkward readability color, coupled with too-small text leaving book difficult to read. Used as a textbook, everyone in class- ages 19 through 65 all complain of same issue.
Very informative, however. Needs to have layout changed to accommodate successful learning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Important for Self-Publishers and all writers April 26, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Getting It Right with TYPE, The dos and don'ts of typography
Victoria Squire, 2006
ISBN 978-1-85669-474-2
Laurence King Publishing
162 pps. Plus appendices
Ppbk.

A not-overly-technical, but complete book, an important to guide self-publishers on how to understand and produce books that sell. Too many self-publishers fail to realize the value of book design and lay-out--where and how print is placed on book pages. The right type, page design and ink add to a books appeal to buyers.

Hundreds of types exist. Choosing the right one enhances legibility and enjoyment for book buyers.

An excellent book. Novice writers need to especially understand the concepts in this book.
