More About the Author

Since first publishing in January 1996, Lori Foster has become a USA Today, Publisher's Weekly and New York Times bestselling author. Lori has published through a variety of houses, including Kensington, St. Martin's, Berkley, Silhouette and Samhain. She is currently with Harlequin.

Lori believes it's important to give back to the community as much as possible, and for that reason she ran special contests in conjunction with a publisher, facilitating many first sales for new authors. Proceeds from the event have benefited many worthy causes, including the Hamilton County YWCA Battered Women's Shelter, the Animal Adoption Foundation, The Conductive Learning Center for children with spina bifida and cerebral palsy, and The One Way Farm, Children's Home.

In 2007, Lori put together The Write Ingredients a cookbook of recipes donated by popular authors. Proceeds from the cookbook go toward Lori's ongoing "Troop project" of collecting and mailing fun, and sometimes necessary, items to our troops.

In 2008, Lori coordinated with other authors of her choosing, and through Berkley, arranged for the publication of The Power of Love, a special romance anthology of novellas about empowering women. All author and agent proceeds from the anthology go to the Hamilton Co YWCA Battered women's shelter.

In 2009, Tails of Love, another romance anthology with Lori and other contributing authors, was published through Berkley with all agent and author proceeds to benefit The Animal Adoption Foundation.

In 2010, The Gift of Love romance anthology, with Lori and other contributing authors, was published with proceeds to benefit The Conductive Learning Center, a school for children with cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

In 2013, Animal Attraction, a romance anthology that goes with the "Buckhorn Brothers" series, with Lori and other contributing authors, was published with all agent and author proceeds to benefit The Animal Adoption Foundation.

I have read many of Lori Foster's books. Yes, they are formulaic (by series, especially) but I enjoy that formula. I like her books. I have read and re-read her over the years and hope that will continue. That being said, if I had started with this book, I would have stopped with it.

To start, it's been long enough since I read Run the Risk that I didn't remember that I "knew" Rowdy and Avery. I remember liking what was hinted at for them. Maybe if I had remembered, it would have been better. But since I was reading this book with completely fresh eyes, let me just say yuck.

The first chapter starts with the heroine walking in on the hero receiving a blowjob from some random woman in the bar. That scene just turned my stomach. Turns out his character is a man-whore who rather than going to therapy deals with his troubled childhood memories by having meaningless one night stands. When they had sex together, it was impossible for me not to imagine that everything he said to her were the same things he said to thousands of women before. Or to not be bothered by the lack of STD testing prior.

The heroine spends the book alternately proclaiming to everyone she speaks with that yes she knows he's a man-whore but he's "the best man I know" (which completely ignores all the other great men in the book who don't have this guy's problems) and ineffectually glaring jealously at the hero as he flirts his way through every woman in the bar - including the woman he got the BJ from earlier. For his part, the hero eventually realizes that for the first time he can imagine a future with someone. Also, despite feeling grumpy about it and his best efforts to prove otherwise, he's unfortunately not attracted to other women anymore.

I use to be a big fan of Lori Foster's books. I took a breather for a while and thought I'd try one of her books.

Getting Rowdy is your typical romantic suspense novel. Avery Mullins, the heroine, has someone evil out to get her. Rowdy Yates, the hero, is a super macho sexy guy, doing anything to save the heroine (and since this is a Lori Foster book, you know that there's a fight somewhere in the story). He's afraid of commitment, but of course, falls in love with the heroine because she's different than all the other women he's been with.

Not so different from a lot of romance novels. So, why didn't I like the book? Basically, the heroine needed a spine and I thought the hero was a jerk.

* Rowdy uses women (I'd say one night stands but I don't even know if they get to stay the whole night) to get over the bad memories of his childhood and help him sleep. Maybe it appeals to other readers that he's different with the heroine, but it didn't work for me.

* The hero has been after Avery for the past year, but she's been putting him off. But when she walks into the bar early and sees him getting "serviced" by another woman, she changes her mind and decides she wants him. Really?

* That evening, Rowdy realizes that he won't be able to have sex with Avery because he was with another woman that morning. And what does the heroine think? She wished it was otherwise.

* Rowdy tells the heroine that he's not going to be a monk. And what does she think to herself? "Good. That would be such a waste of raw sensuality." Are you kidding me?

* He reacts badly to some situations and she blames herself because she's insensitive. No, he's a jerk.

I was befuddled by all the amazing reviews this book received! I had to stop reading this book halfway through. Couldn't stand how desperate and needy the heroine was for the hero. She had no self-respect and pride at all where the hero was concerned. The hero was a man whore and any doubt the heroine had of getting involved with him was obliterated (she kept denying him for a year) when she caught him in the throes of passion with another woman. Now, apparently she couldn't wait to sleep with him. She even threw herself at him after he rejected her and told her to leave with another man. I like Lori Foster books, but what was she thinking?!?!

First off some of the things she writes seem old fashioned, and it always seems like her heros are like superman or something. They can always take four or five guys, at once and they know everything about what the heroine is thinking or wanting. Second if I walked in on a guy I was attracted to getting oral I certainly would be kissing on him that same night, or thinking it was time to give it up to him.

The heroine needs a backbone she really annoyed me. I couldn't even finish the book and I really tried. I just don't like her writing style anymore i used to but it just seem like all her books are all the same.

I've read all the other Lori Foster books in this series and the build up of the main character, Rowdy, seemed different when he got his own story. I didn't like Avery in this book. She's not strong and brave, she's immature and clingy. I can't imagine, after seeing someone I was interested in a 'compromising' position with another woman, having any interest in him again. Rowdy was well written as a hero but Avery needed a butt kickin'. I skipped about 1/4 of the middle of the book and jumped to the end...
